About the adventure

Essence is a new setting-agnostic tabletop RPG built around preparation, character freedom, and meaningful tactical choices. Rather than locking your character into a traditional class, Essence lets you develop through Physical, Mental, and Spiritual abilities, choosing the skills, combat styles, equipment, powers, and passive abilities that define who your character becomes. Characters can specialize heavily, branch into entirely different roles, or grow into combinations that would be difficult to represent in a class-based game. Adventures reward more than simply showing up with the right numbers on your character sheet. Planning, downtime, equipment, personal connections, and the choices you make before a dangerous situation can matter just as much as what happens once initiative begins. Combat is intended to be tactical without turning every encounter into a long war of attrition: positioning, reactions, resource use, prepared actions, vulnerabilities, and deciding how to approach an obstacle all matter. This is an active playtest of Essence, so you’ll be helping test the game as well as playing it. No previous experience with the system is expected, and learning the rules is part of the session. I’m especially interested in seeing what players naturally understand, what choices feel exciting, where the rules get in the way, and what completely unexpected things you try to do with them. You do not need to be a game designer or rules expert. If you enjoy character customization, tactical encounters, planning with your group, and trying a system while it is still being built, you’re exactly the kind of player I’m looking for.

About me

Hello! My name is Ryan, I have been playing D&D since the era of AD&D back in the late 90s. Played 3.0, 3.5, 4e, pathfinder, and now am a avid fan of 5e. All in all I have some 25,000 hours of gaming between various sites and systems having run everything from main stream D&D to obscure rules clunky systems like Mistborn: the Adventure Game. I ended up hosting games because I enjoy DMing more than anything, I love to create and bring my world to life, and see the players interact with it. The reason I charge is to continue to build a better and better system, as every dollar I earn is reinvested into my hobby.

Character creation

Creating your character

We will all create them together as a team. You do not need to bring or refer to anything as this is play-testing based.

The current party

Nothing yet, everyone will be making a party together! This is designed to be somewhat in function as west-march style just to allow for lots of playtesting, so not everyone need join every adventure/session.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

I use Foundry VTT/Forge domain hosting for the tabletop and Discord for voice.

What Ryan brings to the table

Homebrew rules
