About the adventure

This is, quite simply, a game of Monster of the Week. I don't know where it will take place, and I don't know what kind of monsters you'll be hunting. I don't know what year it is and I don't know how the magic works. I know nothing because YOU haven't made a character yet. Choose a playbook based on classic TV tropes from shows like Buffy, Supernatural, and The Vampire Diaries! Create the badass monster hunter you want to play! (I have a library of 30 playbooks to choose from including three custom playbooks of my own, and a personality quiz to suggest a playbook to you, if you like) No matter where this ends up taking place or what this team ends up looking like, I promise you this: I'll give you a good story with hardship, consequences, and growth. Every Monster of the Week playbook has a "catch" of some sort; a piece of your life that can't help but get in the way of monster hunting. THAT'S where I pull conflicts from. Again, that all stems from character creation. Trust me. This'll be fun!

About me

Hi! I'm Dee :) I'm a writer, storyteller, and improviser. I started GMing to entertain my sisters in 2020, fell in love with it, and never stopped. I love creating characters, I love putting them through hardships, I love watching them change. I love how different dice-systems support different genres of stories, and how good rules will lead you straight to the coolest story moments you can imagine. I love telling a fun story TOGETHER. I am not a prepper. I am not a number-cruncher, I am not a map-maker, I am not a stat-blocker. If anything, I'm a question-asker. I ask you questions I'm curious about, you answer them, I say "yes, and..." and we go from there. I operate pretty much entirely in the Theater of the Mind, except for music. I gotta have my tunes. I have been blessed in the past with players who make art from our games, or fully write out in-character letters, or use props and costumes on their end of the screen. Those things mean the world to me! I know my strengths, and I know where they end. Whatever you'd like to contribute, I will say "Yes, and". I DO NOT USE ANY AI IN MY GAME EXPERIENCES. Not even a little, not at any stage in the process, never ever. I value, over pretty much anything else, our ability to create art with each other. I do not allow any AI usage from players in my games either. WE ARE ENOUGH.

Character creation

Creating your character

Join the game for an invite to the Discord server. There, I have a whole guide for creating a hunter for Monster of the Week. You can choose from the 8 starter playbooks in the core game, if you'd like, but I have a collection of 30 playbooks to choose from in the Discord. I've got a playbook for ANY character trope you want to play. I even have a personality quiz to help you pick one. Join the Discord and I'll walk you through it.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

When you join the campaign, you can join the Discord. That's where we'll have our session calls, discussions, and any supplemental materials. You're free to roll physical dice, but I'll also have a virtual dice link for a web browser as an alternative.

What Devon Jade 😁 brings to the table

I use LOTS of music in my games: I play soundtrack-y type songs and an ambient score quite often. Whatever vibe this story ends up being, I guarantee I'll have the perfect music for it. I like rich character intrigue, mysteries, and collaborative storytelling. I love the Rule of Cool. If the rules aren't cool, we'll change them. I love the theater of the mind. I love describing visuals as if we're all watching a TV show together. I love putting endearing characters through trials and tribulations :)

Homebrew rules

I've tweaked the magic system to add a few Use Magic moves: Tell a Fortune, Borrow Magic, and Cast a Spell When you describe a process or a series of events, you can roll +Cool to see how this plays out as a montage, like on TV! :D To reward any player brave enough to let their Hunter die in the game, they can give one of their playbook's Moves to any other Hunter when they say goodbye. I call it "Pass The Torch" This is probably my silliest one, but I also have a "Product Placement" move, which gives you points for directly engaging with a marketable product. However, it is subject to a dice roll. (This move once caused a bottle of Trader Joe's Magnifisauce to explode on the ground, causing a Final Destination-like series of events, eventually leading to the explosion of an entire house. That roll was a fail.) I have three homebrew playbooks you could play (or take moves from when you level up with another playbook): The Innocent "I'm out of my depth, I know. This is a stupid, stupid idea, I know, but I won't just pick my nose and pretend you're not in danger. You want me to stay safe? You first!" The Doomed "Time's not on my side. Just my luck, I guess. Hunting monsters is as good a use of my time as any. Don't worry about me, I'll be fine. I mean—I won't be fine, but that's fine." and, The Pest " [insert your terrible catchphrase here] "

Safety

How Devon Jade 😁 creates a safe table

We'll have a comprehensive Lines and Veils write-out in the Discord for reference. (Lines - subject matter you want to keep firmly on the other side of the line, no exceptions. Veils - subject matter you'd prefer to keep on the other side of a veil, to be acknowledged but not dwelled on.) I like to do Stars and Wishes after every session, giving you a chance to express what you liked and what you'd want in the future, and giving the whole group a chance to come down from the game experience. Open discussions of content boundaries are welcomed and encouraged, but I am also always available to message privately as well.
