About the adventure

Captain Holt and Detective Jake Peralta stand before the squad in the briefing room. You and your party sit in the back of the room, unfortunately behind Scully who just ate a meatball sub and cheese fries. You hold your breath throughout the briefing. Jake—outfitted in a magician costume—pulls an endless scarf from his sleeve and says, “Welcome comrades to the most important briefing of your lives. As you all know, the Holt-Peralta Halloween bet has been made, and the clock is ticking.” Captain Holt steps forward and says, “This year, we rented out the Party Pyramid in the Upper City. The Party Pyramid, or ‘Double P’ as Jake likes to call it, has designed the ultimate challenge for us. We will break into teams. Whichever team has the Crown of Victory in their hands at midnight will officially be dubbed amazing detectives/geniuses. We will now select our team members.” Sergeant Jeffords flips a coin, and Jake is first to pick. Charles Boyle looks pleadingly at Jake, but he picks Amy. Captain Holt picks Gina. Jake picks Diaz. And the team selection continues until there is only Scully, Hitchcock, and your party left. Holt chooses Scully, and Jake begrudgingly chooses Hitchcock. Captain Holt says, “Now that teams have been selected—” You raise your hand and say, “Excuse me, Captain, what about us?” Captain Holt shrugs and says, “Our teams are full. Better luck next year, losers.” Jake pushes past everyone, shouting, “Last one to the Pyramid is a rotten egg!” You and your party look at each other. They picked Scully AND Hitchcock over you? No. This won’t stand. You will form your own team, take the Crown of Victory, and become amazing detectives/geniuses. This one-shot is part of our Baldur’s Nine-Nine West Marches game. In this drop-in campaign, you can join with a consistent character and level up from 5 to 10. Or, you can experiment with the new 5.5e species and subclasses by playing a new character every game. Suit up, Harpers. It’s time to show the squad who the real amazing detectives/geniuses are. Nine-Nine!

About me

Hi friends! My name is Kat, and I am a published author, video game narrative designer, and professional D&D game master. My debut novel, Good People, is forthcoming from Simon & Schuster in 2027. I’ve also worked as a writer for a South Korean video game developer. My game writing credits include Delabs Games’ Rumble Racing Star, Space Frontier, and other titles launched by Delabs Games’ parent company 4:33 Creative Lab. When it comes to D&D, I use my professional writing and game design experience to create immersive, custom stories with unique game loops. In addition to being a game master and professional writer, I’ve taught creative writing at the University of South Florida, and I use my college-level teaching experience to create a safe and inclusive learning environment for any new players at my tables. Character creation

Creating your character

I have pre-made characters for every class. If you’d like to use one, let me know in our Discord server. If you want to create your own character, here are the guidelines: - Level: 5. All new “detectives” start at level 5. - Level Progression: You can progress your character with each completed bounty. Level 10 is the precinct’s cap. Characters typically level up after completing 4-5 bounties. - Allowable Player Options: Use official 2024 5.5e content only. Homebrew content is not allowed. - Stats: Use Point Buy or Standard Array - Free Feat: In addition to whatever feat you select for level 4, all players receive the “Harper Feat” from Heroes of Faerun. Instructions for adding this additional feat is available in our Discord. Links to the Discord and DnDBeyond campaign will be provided after booking. - Starting Equipment: Use standard starting equipment OR starting gold. Regardless of your choice, you have an additional 100gp to spend on non-magical gear. - Magic Item: Choose 1 uncommon magic item from any official 5.5e sourcebook. Permanent items only; no consumables like potions or scrolls.

What to expect

To play, you will need the following: 1. A microphone 2. Headphones to prevent echoes 3. A laptop or desktop computer 4. A reliable Internet connection 5. A free DnDBeyond account 6. A free Discord account 7. Cameras are optional. (I will have mine on!) To join our game, follow these steps: 1. Join our Discord server. A link will be provided after booking. What Kat brings to the table

I will provide maps and source books on D&D Beyond, immersive music, and narrative-driven combat. I do my best to provide character voices for NPCs. As for rules, we'll be using the Rule of Cool for the most part.

Homebrew rules

Perkins Critical Hits: Roll once, then add the maximum possible damage for the damage die. (E.g. If you rolled a critical hit for your longsword attack, your damage will be 1d8 + 8 + your modifier.) Concentration Checks: If you roll a natural 20 on a concentration check, you enter a state of "Perfect Focus." For the rest of this combat, damage can no longer force you to make concentration saves for that specific spell. Your concentration will only end if the spell’s duration expires, you cast another concentration spell, or you are incapacitated.

Safety

How Kat creates a safe table

A link to our Lines and Veils document is available in the #🏁start-here channel on Discord. If you have any lines or veils you'd like to add to your game, DM me. No need to explain anything at all. I will anonymously add them to the list for our game to ensure the whole group is on the same page—no questions asked. We will also use X-Cards. If a scene or description makes you uncomfortable, simply type "X" in the text chat or say "Pause." We will immediately stop, skip the scene, or adjust the narrative—no questions asked and no explanation needed. You may DM me the X if you prefer. I’m very good at changing gears on a dime, and we’ll move on immediately.
