About the adventure
New to D&D? Grab a character, learn the basics, and jump straight into the action. You'll start as a level 1 adventurer escaping a dangerous camp filled with danger, treasure, and mercenaries. Along the way, you'll make key choices, uncover secrets, solve simple challenges, and work with the rest of the party to survive. We will be playing through: Tyranny of Dragons, one of the earliest 5e modules. You'll join a group of adventurers from level 1-15 as they work against a fanatic cult bent on bringing about the end of the world. Expect lots of combat, heroic moments, and exciting encounters, with only light roleplay required. If battling monsters, exploring dangerous locations, rolling dice, and trying cool abilities sounds fun, you'll fit right in. We'll focus on learning by doing rather than memorizing rules. This game is designed to teach Dungeons & Dragons in a relaxed, beginner-friendly way. You don't need to know any rules ahead of time. I'll explain everything as we play, help you understand your character's abilities, and make sure everyone has a chance to learn the game and contribute to the story.

About me
-Hi, I'm Joel Ottwell, and I'm a D&D Zealot. -Running/Playing D&D is the joy of my life! -I believe the two most important rules of D&D are: Be kind and have fun. People deserve to be treated with dignity, honor, and respect, and it's my honor and privilege to partake in this amazing hobby. -Over the past few years, I went from getting my co-workers and friends to play D&D to getting an entire game store to play. I've gone from zero experience DMing to Forever DM in no time. -As for how I got an entire game store playing D&D, long story short: I went to my LGS on their D&D night, and they said I was the only person to show up in weeks. So, I DM’d weekly at that game store for a year and a half. Now we have over 40 people playing at seven tables. Three of those tables have DMs who started at my table, and I encouraged/mentored them to start their own adventures. -I started playing D&D 5e when a high school friend introduced me to the game. While I loved playing, it wasn't until I started binging Dimension 20 that I really fell in love with D&D and TTRPGs.

Creating your character
We'll create level 1 characters in session 0/1 on D&D Beyond. I will have everyone join a D&D Beyond campaign for VTT and sharing rolls. You can also use any of the books I have. Players can roll stats on D&D Beyond during session 1 or can use the standard array or point buy. Afterward, any characters can join using standard array or point buy. If you want to roll stats after session 1, we'll just have to talk before a session to make sure everything is chill.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
You will need to have a mic and headphones. You need access to both D&D Beyond and Discord. Character creation before Session 0/1 is encouraged but not needed. A small background will be needed for your character, and I award lore and magic items to players with a thoughtful background.
What Joel Ottwell brings to the table
I bring difficult combat, a grounded world, and expertise in D&D beyond running games over Discord. I'm excited to meet and play with players of any experience level, and I hope this is the start of something fun!
Homebrew rules
You have to honor a nat 20.
