About the adventure

In a world that is slowly being consumed by the Dark, you must band together to survive, thrive, and heck with a bit of luck, perhaps even banish the shadows from this land! This is a grim fantasy adventure inspired by games like The Witcher, Dark Souls, The Banner Saga and movies like The Ritual. In ShadowDark, no character is special. No character is above the strength and power of others in the world. The world challenges you to use your heads and leverage the strengths and resources of your party to survive because brute force alone will fail you as it has failed others who have fallen to the Dark. In other words, lets have a fun and brutal adventure through a spooky forest!

About me

Hi there, I'm Erick, a dad and RPG enthusiast who has also gone by Ash when throwing monsters and puzzles at my friends online. I've always been interested in DnD and when I finally got into it, it was better than I could have ever expected thanks to amazing people I played with and DM'd for. My goal, is to be that DM (and person) who has your back and regardless of your level of experience, makes you feel welcome, safe and bring laughter to a table. But there will be dramatic villains doing their villainous things. There will be earth shattering events related to the barbarians uncle being revealed as the eldritch so and so. If you want to throw an axe or spell midair at the blue dragon charging towards you full tilt before you hit the ground, we will roll the dice. If you haven't already, you will meet some amazing people here on SPG or wherever you find your one shots and campaigns. If I can help to facilitate that while working with you to create epic stories, that will be reward enough. No matter who you are, where your from, or what your situation is, if you're down to go on an adventure alongside me, I won't let any barriers get in your way. Everyone deserves to find a group like I did way back when, where there is no judgment, only acceptance, laughter and good time.

Character creation

Creating your character

This campaign uses characters built with the Shadowdark RPG core book or Shadowdark RPG free Quickstart Set (available on DriveThruRPG). You can also use classes from the Cursed Scroll books and Shadowdarklings.net, including the cursed Knight of St. Ydris, the Witch, and the Warlock. Do not read past page 39 of Cursed Scroll 1! Characters begin at 1st level. Support for character creation is available prior to Session 1 or during a Session 0 if needed!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players will need a free Discord account, reliable internet access, a working mic and that's it! We will be using the virtual tabletop called Owlbear Rodeo which does not require any account.

What Ash (Erick) brings to the table

Besides the vtt and visuals like tokens and battle maps, I'll also provide music during this session to set the mood and do voices. During gameplay will take time to explain how stuff works but we won't get bogged down with crunchy rules, discussions and stick true to the "Rulings over Rules" philosophy to keep the game moving and fun focused. As this is a campaign, I will be available for collaborating about characters, campaign ideas, helping with troubleshoorting, discussing the system and rules together, etc.

Homebrew rules

Taking inspiration from Slyflourish's run at the The Gloaming, we'll use the following House Rules: 1. Don't Lose a Spell Until You've Succeeded At Least Once (Instead of losing access to a spell when you fail a spellcasting check, you instead lose the spell only if you've cast it successfully at least once.) 2. Lighting a Torch in the Dark takes a DC 12 Int or Dex Check at Disadvantage (Lighting a torch when you can see requires no check. Lighting a torch in the dark requires a DC 12 Intelligence or Dexterity check at disadvantage (since you can't see). 3. Characters Begin with Max Hit Points (1st level characters start with maximum hit points and add their Constitution modifier if it's above zero.) 4. Lose One Death Round for Damage Taken (When a character at zero hit points takes damage, they lose one round on their death timer.)
