About the adventure
This is the cinematic formal step into Hal’s new campaign series: THE BROKEN COMPASS REQUIRED: Players must first complete the introductory one-shot: ➡️ AH-001 Winterfall: Crash in the Mountains, Old-School AD&D 2e ~ That one-shot is where you create your character, enter Hal’s D&D world, and begin the adventure that leads directly into this campaign. Consider AH-001 to be the training mission. It's a great stand alone module that introduces your character into this world in a believably exciting way. ~ Once your character survives Crash in the Mountains, there is a narrative progression that leads directly into: The Campaign Opener: ➡️ THE BROKEN COMPASS, Descent to the Jungles, AH-002 Progression : AH-001 Crash in the Mountains ( intro one-shot ) CAMPAIGN GAMES : ➡️ AH-002 Descent to the Jungles ( 1 session ) AH-003 The Stronghold ( 1-2 sessions ) AH-004 Intrigue in the City ( 1-3 sessions ) AH-005 The Secrets Below ( 1-3 sessions ) AH-006 Marching Orders ( 1-3 sessions ) If you have ever wondered what 'ANCIENT DUNGEON DELVING' felt like back in the 70's and 80's... here's a chance to do so with a grizzled veteran DM. Leave your preconceptions behind ... expect immersion, danger, and a vivid, grounded, perilous journey.

About me
Hello fellow gamers :) I began Dungeon Mastering in 1979, on top of a windswept mountain peak in the Kananaskis Valley in Alberta, Canada... running games for a captive audience. I developed a style born from my experience and training in theatre arts: an immersive, cinematic approach where players experience the world through their characters’ eyes. I build tempo and watch carefully for cues from the players. I love reading the table... knowing when to escalate the action and when to just let the moment breathe. My DM style is grounded. Characters shape their own destinies through their actions. I run a world where consequences matter, innovation is rewarded, and sessions are shaped to PULL players into the scene... not just drop them a map. I Dungeon Mastered almost exclusively. Being behind the screen has always given me the biggest kick. I’ve DM’d in Calgary, Ottawa, Toronto, Waterloo, and places between... running weekly games for veteran players for years. One campaign followed us across four cities, three time zones, and fourteen years. I stopped around the year 2003. And now, 23 years later, I’m dusting off my games, recreating my worlds, updating my files, improving my delivery... AND... cherry-picking the absolute BEST ideas from 5e. I understand that the game has evolved, and I’m genuinely looking forward to offering today’s players a chance to... Step back in history and experience Dungeons & Dragons, the way we played... 1980s Old School.

Creating your character
I have developed a comprehensive character generator for this campaign. With the players' input... we create the characters before game night. It takes less than 10 minutes. The emphasis is on physicality. All aspects of the characters have subtly contributed to the Saving Throw Tables. Players can create back stories, if they wish.

What Hal Leggett brings to the table
I run a fully guided, immersive experience. ~ Strong environmental description using all five senses ~ Controlled pacing — building tension, then letting moments breathe ~ A living world where actions have weight and consequences matter ~ Minimal hand-holding — players are given information, not direction I focus on pulling players into the scene rather than presenting mechanics. You can expect: ~ Distinct NPC presence (voice, tone, intent) ~ Situations that reward observation, creativity, and planning ~ Combat that is grounded, dangerous, and meaningful ~ A game shaped by player decisions, not a fixed path
