About Hal Leggett

Hello fellow gamers :) I began my history of Dungeon Mastering in 1979. On top of a windswept mountain peak in the Kananaskis Valley in Alberta Canada. Running games for a captive audience... I developed a style born of my experience and training in theatre arts. A game style emphasizing an immersive, cinematic experience where I gave the players their surroundings by describing the world through their characters' eyes. Building tempo and watching carefully for cues from my players as to how to direct the game. To me, I love reading the table... knowing when to press tension and when to let the moment breathe. My DM style is grounded. I let the characters shape their own destinies with their actions. I play a world where consequences matter, innovation is rewarded and sessions are shaped to PULL players into the scene... not just drop them a map. I Dungeon Mastered exclusively. Being behind the screen gives me the biggest kick. I have DM'd in cities from Calgary, Ottawa, Toronto, Waterloo and places between. Weekly games, attended by veteran players, for years... our longest campaign went 14 years. I stopped around the year 2003. And now, 23 years later, I'm dusting off my games, recreating my worlds, updating my files, improving my delivery ... AND ... cherry picking the absolute BEST of the 5e designs. I understand that the game has evolved and I'm really looking forward to : ~ offering today's players a chance to ... Step back in history and experience Dungeons & Dragons... 1980's Old School.

How Hal Leggett runs games

I like to give the players lots of lee-way to make choices. I don't pull punches and the players, win or lose categorically love my playing style. Give them their 5 senses and any intuitive clues then let the players choose their actions with as little steerage as I can.

Hal Leggett's ideal table

The players understand their surroundings as seen through their characters' eyes. As a DM, I build tempo and watch carefully for cues from my players as to how to direct the game. To me, I love reading the table... knowing when to press tension and when to let the moment breathe. My DM style is grounded. I let the characters shape their own destinies with their actions. Mine is a world where consequences matter, innovation is rewarded and sessions are shaped to PULL players into the scene... not just drop them a map.
