About the adventure

Welcome to Phandalin! Phandalin is a small, cheerful town filled mostly with humans, where life has always been relatively peaceful. That all changed when a dragon moved into the nearby mountain. The dragon has driven countless monsters and dangerous creatures from their homes, forcing them down into the surrounding lands and straight towards Phandalin. Now the town is facing threats it has never seen before, and someone needs to step up. This adventure is designed to be a fun introduction to Dungeons & Dragons, making it great for new players while still offering plenty of excitement for experienced adventurers. Expect a happy but horrifying adventure where things can go from silly and lighthearted to genuinely terrifying in an instant. Most combats will push you to the brink, with a few easier encounters mixed in to give you a chance to breathe. this is a book that is meant for new or returning players brought into the newest DND version are you ready to answer the call to be heros or menaces?

About me

Hello all I'm Zach I have been playing dungeons and dragons since just before covid, I have been fascinated by them for about 10 years now but didn't actually get to play until 2019-2020. I had played under 3 different GMs for the first year in 3 separate small campaigns and took up GM-ing just after that. I have run 4 separate games as of this time each running to at least level 8 and as high as level 15, so I am okay with running higher level campaigns and longer term campaigns as well Hope to bring my GM style to you in the near future

Character creation

Creating your character

character creation will happen before the sessions start to get a baseline of what you are wanting to play and discussing what you want out of your character.

The current party

Currently not applicable but happy for many or most things

What to expect

Preparing for the session

you will need an account on DND beyond and a discord account Have a guideline of what you want as your character but be willing to adjust a small amount when getting through session 0 with your group. Have some backstory ready and prepared (can be subject to change) make sure you are in the discord server at the start of session time and give me a heads up if you are running late

What Zach brings to the table

The plan is to use music and ambient sound throughout my games, adapting it to different locations, encounters, and major moments. I’m currently working on getting access to the right tools and finding a good way to implement music without it becoming distracting. My goal is to use it to enhance the atmosphere and make important moments memorable. Combat will be tactical and challenging, encouraging teamwork, strategy, positioning, and creative thinking. There will also be a genuine risk of character death, meaning choices and their consequences can have a real impact. I generally follow Rules as Written to keep things consistent and fair, but I’m also happy to use the Rule of Cool when the situation calls for it. If someone comes up with something creative or cinematic that fits the moment, I’ll consider working with it. I’ll also be experimenting with different voices and accents for NPCs. My voices aren’t the best, but I’ll give them a shot and work on improving them as the games continue. Most importantly, I want players to enjoy their characters. If you aren’t enjoying your character, whether from a story perspective or simply as a player, I’m willing to work with you on changes or even a full revamp and find a way to fit it naturally into the story.

Homebrew rules

Drinking a potion is a bonus action. Critical hits are max on the damage die and another die e.g. 1d10+3 now equals 1d10 + 13 Death saves are rolled to the dm only not the group Luck roll will be a random d20 check to see if there is the possibility to know information. E.g. a 6 int character knowing a forgotten language could have had a dream about it if they roll a high enough luck check.

Safety

How Zach creates a safe table

Session zero will include players introducing themselves and their character concepts, i will then reiterate the tone and campaign setting. I will ask you all to direct message me any things that you do not want to hear about that would trigger you. E.g. cannibalism is a big no no dm me that and I will keep any portion of campaign away from said topic. We will then go into more of an in depth character creation so that we can work and intertwine charcters more than just being strangers that met at the current moment. After that is all done we will have a little combat encounter to see if people enjoy the vibe of their character. Backstory does not have to be complete at this portion but an idea would be ideal. Another thing is that if you are going to be absent notify me before the session as otherwise you will be charged for the session and we will be waiting for you to join the call before starting up with where we left off
