About the adventure

Beginners welcome, and experienced players too! Welcome to the Wildsea, an undulating expanse of greenery that covers (most of) the world. You are wildsailors, cutting your way across the island-studded treetop wilderness, seeking salvage, secrets, and safe harbors. In this sandbox-style adventure, your characters will make the big decisions about what to explore, who to befriend, and where to point the prow of your sawtooth ship. Learn to Play! If you've been looking for an opportunity to explore the Wildsea for the first time, here's a great chance. The rules are simple and will be taught as we play, and with the option either to select a pre-made character or to quickly create your own, you can jump directly into the adventure.

About me

I've been GMing and playing ttrpgs at least weekly for the past 8 years. D&D 5th edition is where I spend the bulk of my time, but I've also played in/run other systems such as Wildsea, Shadowdark, Daggerheart, Nimble, Starfinder, etc. I've DM'd multi-year campaigns with a consistent group as well as brief community mini campaigns and one-shots with rotating players. My focus as a DM is on story, but I pride myself on encyclopedic rules knowledge (that I'm nonetheless willing to bend if it maximizes the fun at the table). I run custom campaigns far more often than published modules, and am most excited about telling stories *with* players, rather than *at* them. I have extensive experience creating mechanics, subclasses, items, and spells to match the stories players want to tell and characters they want to build, and am always excited when players come to me with ideas. Storytelling at my table is collaborative, and the players, the dice, and I are all equal partners. I am currently running: 👑 Houses of Green: A full-length, character-focused D&D campaign within a world of feudal titles and druidic tribes. (Full) 🪼Scavengers Reign: A sci-fi reskin of D&D in which players crash land on an alien planet teeming with life. (Full) 🌹Roses from Ruin: A learn-to-play mini campaign for the eclectic Wildsea ttrpg. (Full) StartPlaying campaigns I've run in the past: 🐈‍⬛Cat Bells & Lattes (x1): A cozy, low-stakes D&D campaign in which a group of adventurers settled down to open a shop.

Character creation

Creating your character

Players who join the adventure will gain access to a Google Drive which has both a selection of pre-generated characters as well as instructions for quickly creating your own if you wish to make a custom character. For the slightly-knowledgeable: You can follow the Quick Start Kit instructions in the rulebook to generate a character. For the well-initiated: Build a character using the Old Dog creation rules.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players should read the “Read Me” document in the Google Drive (shared when a player joins the adventure), which provides instructions for character creation and the basic rules of the game. Other documents in the Drive will help prepare players as well, but all aspects of playing Wildsea will be covered in-session.

What Colten brings to the table

I’ll provide an educational and imaginative experience for players both new and experienced. Wildsea grants equal storytelling power to the Firefly (Game Master) and the players, so if players have particular styles of adventure they want to explore, just let me know. That said, in our first session I’ll provide narrative structure and several potential adventure threads, so while players will have choices, we won’t risk the paralysis of a boundless sandbox. I’ll also provide a Discord server in which we’ll play, a Google Drive folder with helpful documents, and access to an Owlbear Rodeo virtual tabletop for situations when something more than theater-of-the-mind is called for.

How Colten creates a safe table

After joining the adventure, players will receive a link to a survey specific to this adventure which asks about each person's lines, veils, and preferences. If at any point during the session a player has questions or feels uncomfortable, I welcome and encourage them to speak up. If they prefer not to, however, any mid-session concerns can be directly messaged to me.
