About the adventure

Your dreams have called you to the isolated historical town of Grovecrest with prophecies of adventure and glory. It turns out, you’re not the only one, and the more similar situations you discover, the stranger things seem to get. You are recruited into a local monster crisis which has recently begun plaguing Grovecrest’s citizens, finding yourself on an investigative path. When the local area leads to nothing but dead ends, you find yourself traveling the continent in hopes a scholar might have answers. It doesn’t stop there. Along your path, you discover yet another mystery. The city of Portcrest, the only Port on the continent of Divinara, is your destination. You arrive there hoping to find a scholar. The city seems tense, the people distrusting, hospitable businesses are closed left and right. There are whispers of demons who take people to transform them into violent shells of their past selves, and rumors of cursed land that is forbidden to stand upon. You’re left with more questions than you had before. Could these issues be connected? Where are these creatures coming from? What is this mysterious darkness rumored to be plaguing the realm? Why were you called here from within your dreams? Does it all mean something? Come forth, adventurers, and answer Divinity’s Forgotten Call.

About me

StartPlaying profile picture art commissioned from @Sagirimono on VGen.co My name is Nyx, and I would love to be YOUR next DM! My game tables provide a lighthearted, semi-humorous environment where you are encouraged to be yourself, create the character you'll enjoy playing most, and engage with the narrative by intertwining your backstory with the core storyline if that's something you're interested in. I have been writing creatively for over ten years of my life. In that time, have developed a strong sense of creating a full-circle story that can connect back to itself and have logically assembled explanations. I enjoy writing original campaigns and environments and incorporating interesting homebrew aspects whilst still respecting and utilizing the D&D 2014 base ruleset. In the future, I will offer Scion TTRPG campaigns through StartPlaying as well. I hope to see you at the table!

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation will be an involved process for both myself as the DM and for the player creating the character, and will take place through private messaging or channels on Discord using Roll20 character sheets. Communication will be closely in-touch and details will be exchanged thoroughly throughout the process to ensure your character is built for the world this campaign takes place in. For example, this particular campaign takes place during an era where the tiefling, orc, and dragonborn races have yet to evolve into existence, so a player would not be able to take those options. (The plot for how orcs come to evolve is actually going to be planted within this very campaign!) The entire character creation process will take place before session zero, and before session zero I will have a one-on-one session with each player to give them a chance to feel out their characters and make final revisions before the group comes together as players. This campaign's starting level is 5, and players can choose between standard rolling or point buy for their stats, but my policies are designed to make standard rolling the more advantageous option. I have a house rule in place that allows players who do not like their standard roll statistics to re-roll as many times as they'd like to, UNDER THE CONDITION that the entire group is re-rolled instead of a single stat. Most of my character creation process is based around the core D&D 2014 5e rules, but I offer custom supplements that I've written myself which serve to make the numbers friendlier and more flexible. These supplements are geared towards players who share my perspective on wishing D&D's numbers were friendlier and more flexible, and they are deliberately NOT intended to be balanced as though they are official.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

I will provide you with a Discord server invite if you choose to join this campaign, so please have a Discord account with your friend requests and DM permissions active/open. This campaign will be run through Roll20. It is PREFERRED that you have an account on their website so that you can log in during sessions and store your character sheet there. If you do not have one and/or are unable to get one, we can discuss an arrangement where I will stream the Roll20 session to the campaign calls in the Discord server. You have the option to speak during session calls through the Discord server. If you would like to, you will need a working microphone. If your preference is to stay muted, you will be fine to use text chatting without one. I allow players to choose between physical dice or digital random number generation bots. If you are intending to roll physical dice during this campaign, please have a working camera that you can clearly aim at the surface which you are rolling your dice in/on so I can see it. The camera should be of good enough quality to clearly discern the numbers the dice land on. If you intend to roll using number generation bot commands, you will not need a working camera.

What Nyx brings to the table

I provide unique character voices for each NPC to the best of my ability, have set ambient playlists depending on the mood or environment, and provide visual references for as many items/locations/characters as possible. Currently, I am working on building up my commission collection and depend on using the classic "find art on Pinterest and then credit the original artist" method. I do NOT use artwork that was commissioned by others nor clearly labeled to discourage personal usage. The rule of cool is my number one priority in a game. D&D tends to be tedious to follow to the letter, and I personally find that to be a drag. Who says the rules have to be consistent? Who says they have to apply to everything written with the same template every time? I love to shake things up and create inconsistent yet logical progressions when it comes to both my story and the numerical game mechanics. The time period of the world we're currently in is quite early on the historical timeline, and many things will be unknown or undiscovered to the people of the world. This will impact how, where, and why players will or won't be able to acquire certain forms of knowledge necessary to the adventure. I believe in allowing players to follow through with their consequences. The plot of this campaign is designed to be adaptable for the sake of the freedom I like to provide at my tables. Would you like to piss off the only person who can help you solve a quest puzzle? I'm not going to tell you that you CAN'T do that, I'm simply going to warn you about the potential consequences of your actions. Choose to go through with them anyway, and the party could find themselves needing to find some other way to progress. These consequences impact the timeline of the conflict's worsening as well, and the more time your setbacks cost you the harder things will be to reverse. By contrast, if you choose to be exceptionally kind to the world and the characters in it, you will be abundantly rewarded for that effort and discernment. These actions can even go so far as to impact the party's ease or difficulty in accessing regions they haven't been to yet. Overall, my table is about immersion and adventure. Take a seat, discover who and how you'd like to play, and settle in for the ride!

Homebrew rules

As previously stated, the Tiefling, Orc, and Dragonborn races haven't evolved at this point in the planet's history yet. This campaign plants the seeds for Orcs. When deciding stats with standard rolling, THE ENTIRE GROUP can be re-rolled infinitely until the player is satisfied. STATS CANNOT BE RE-ROLLED ONE AT A TIME. You either take the whole group, or you take none of it. A lot of my custom-written supplements introduce extra abilities or features, which would be too extensive to detail here.

Safety

How Nyx creates a safe table

Players will have the opportunity to disclose any of their limits and triggers to myself and to the rest of the table. Players will have the option to use a safe-word to stop an uncomfortable situation, or to leave the session or campaign at any point if they feel safer doing so. I spend the end of every session call discussing if there is anything that players particularly liked or disliked more than other events that took place that day, and leave the option for them to speak to me about previous instances they didn't immediately bring up if they feel comfortable gathering courage to do so. I do my best to maintain the separation between player and character by asking people how their thoughts and feelings about various events differ from what their character felt. This also gives players an opportunity to really consider what ways they identify with their character, and what ways their character has grown beyond them.
