About the adventure

A routine university field trip should have been nothing more than an academic exercise. Instead, strange discoveries, impossible events and ancient horrors will force you to question everything you think you know. As students or faculty of Miskatonic University, you'll investigate mysteries, uncover terrifying secrets and decide how far you're willing to go in the pursuit of knowledge. New to Call of Cthulhu? No problem! I'll introduce the rules naturally as we play, so no prior knowledge is required. Expect mounting tension, unsettling discoveries, difficult decisions and a story where observation, teamwork and clever thinking are often more valuable than violence. Inspired by cosmic horror and psychological suspense, this is a game that rewards curiosity and immerses players in an unfolding mystery. My games focus on atmosphere, roleplaying and player agency. I use theatre of the mind, supported by Alchemy's immersive presentation and handouts, to bring the world to life while keeping the focus on the story rather than tactical combat. Whether you're uncovering clues, debating impossible choices or simply trying to survive the unknown, your decisions will shape how events unfold. For me, the strongest horror comes from investing in your characters first. The more real they feel, the more terrifying the unknown becomes. Before the campaign begins, we'll have a free Session 0 where I'll guide you through character creation, explain the core mechanics and answer any questions before we begin. Your character will need a connection to Miskatonic University. We'll explore the available options during Session 0, but beyond that you'll be free to create the investigator you want. If you'd rather jump straight in, I'll also have a selection of pre-generated characters available. Estimated campaign length: 15–25 sessions, depending on the group's pace and decisions. I'd rather let the story unfold naturally than rush it simply to meet a predetermined session count. What you'll get: ✓ Fully prepared sessions ✓ Immersive Alchemy VTT presentation ✓ High-quality handouts ✓ Ambient music and atmosphere ✓ Beginner-friendly guidance ✓ A respectful, welcoming table ✓ Session recaps between games ✓ Responsive GM between sessions if you have questions If you enjoy slow-burn mysteries, investigation, creeping dread and stories where every clue matters, I'd love to welcome you to Miskatonic University. Just don't expect to graduate unchanged. If that sounds like the kind of story you'd like to tell, I'd love to see you at the table.

About me

Hi, I'm Simon (Ravncrest), a UK-based Game Master with over 30 years' experience playing TTRPGs and adjacent tabletop games and a passion for immersive storytelling, atmospheric horror, and character-driven roleplaying. For over three years I have focused heavily on GMing, having run everything from single session one-shot adventures all the way through to a long form Call of Cthulhu campaign that has now passed 40 sessions and still going strong. I regularly run Call of Cthulhu, Mothership, Alien, Vampire: The Masquerade, Mörk Borg, Pirate Borg, Mythic Bastionland, and Discworld with the list continuing to grow as new systems capture my imagination! I particularly enjoy investigative games where the atmosphere is just as important as the mystery itself. Whether I'm running horror, science fiction or dark fantasy, I aim to create games where player choices matter, characters feel grounded, and everyone has the chance to contribute to the story. Whether you're an experienced role-player or completely new to the hobby, I aim to provide a relaxed, supportive table where everyone can enjoy the experience. I run my games online using Alchemy, taking advantage of its immersive presentation to bring locations, NPCs and scenes to life. For me, the best moments in tabletop RPGs are the ones that players still talk about months later. My goal is always to create those moments while making sure everyone at the table feels welcome, respected and excited for the next session.

Character creation

Creating your character

We will begin character creation during session 0. Depending on your experience I can either guide you through the entire process or use it as an opportunity for the group to discuss character options. You are then free to flesh out your characters further before we begin the campaign if you want to develop their backstory further. There will also be a number of pre-generated characters provided which can be used as written or used as a springboard for your own character if you prefer.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need an account on Alchemy where we will be playing the game. You can sign up for a free account on alchemyrpg.com if you don't already have one. I also provide a discord server so we have an easy place to discuss things between sessions if needed.

What Ravncrest brings to the table

I aim to create an immersive, atmospheric experience where the story and the characters are at the heart of the game. I use Alchemy to bring locations and NPCs to life, supported by ambient music, sound effects and visual handouts that make the world feel tangible. I generally favour theatre of the mind over tactical maps, although I occasionally use maps and illustrations as handouts for important locations, allowing players to focus on the unfolding story while using their own imagination to bring the world to life. Call of Cthulhu is renowned for its handouts, and I make regular use of letters, reports, newspaper clippings and other in-world documents. Rather than simply being told what your investigators discover, you'll have the opportunity to examine clues for yourselves and piece together the mystery. Player agency is extremely important to me. I enjoy giving players the freedom to explore, ask questions, follow their instincts and decide how their characters respond to the situations they encounter. I don't expect everyone to perform elaborate character voices, and I won't expect you to either. What matters is engaging with your character and the world in whatever way feels comfortable for you. Combat can be dangerous and is rarely the primary solution to a problem. I favour creative thinking, careful preparation and finding alternative approaches over tactical combat for its own sake. When violence does occur, I want it to feel meaningful and consequential. While I aim to know and apply the rules consistently, I also believe they should support the story rather than interrupt it. If an unusual situation arises, I'll make a fair and consistent ruling that keeps the game moving, and if needed, we'll clarify the finer details after the session. My priority is always to create a welcoming, engaging game where everyone has the opportunity to contribute and where your choices genuinely matter.

Homebrew rules

I don't use any major homebrew rules. I generally run Call of Cthulhu using the rules as written, with minor rulings made at the table where necessary to keep the game moving or resolve situations that aren't clearly covered by the rules. Any such rulings will be explained to the group, and I'll aim to apply them consistently throughout the campaign. My priority is to maintain the intended tone and feel of Call of Cthulhu while ensuring that the rules support the story and the players' enjoyment.
