About the adventure

The Road Less Traveled (Players of all experience ranges welcome, love teaching new players to COC or TTRPGS in general!) In 1952, a tabloid ran in multiple townships of Washington State describing a 'traveling road'. A road appearing randomly, in no set location, with its signpost reading "There". The road to "There" always seems to appear alongside a thick fog, and people who have been drawn to travel down this unknown road supposedly never return. Disappearances seem to fluctuate in a 5 year cycle, growing in reported disappearances and sightings before fading back into obscure 'folklore'. As more modern times progress, the care given to these reports fades faster and faster. Perhaps you can succeed in solving this mystery where so many others have failed?

About me

We are a married couple (called Kee and Evan) who have been playing in one another's campaigns for over two years now, while we have both been DMing individually for many more. We decided to try signing up as a joint pair because we fully intend to support one another in our campaigns as co-DMs, so that we can more easily keep a finger to the pulse of our parties and help newer players integrate.

Character creation

Creating your character

This will happen in a mix of pre-session discussion over Discord as well as finalized during Session 0 (which will be free).

What to expect

Preparing for the session

A discord server will be made for players to join so we go over campaign expectations and character creation! Resources will be provided via the discord server's resources channel. For the sessions themselves, they will be hosted in Alchemy, so creating an account there beforehand is recommended. It's very quick and easy to do! There is a program that can be downloaded if desired, but otherwise it can be run in a browser as well.

What Cult Following brings to the table

Generally speaking I enjoy using music, ambience, visuals and interactive ARG-esque clues for campaigns like this. I also do character voices in a sense - not full-on tone changing (it hurts my throat a bit), but legitimate dialogue with emotion and depth behind their words so you feel like you're talking to an actual person and not just another red shirt NPC. I'm hoping to bring my players an interesting mystery to dive into and get immersed within, with surprising developments that subvert expectations (especially within the Lovecraftian genre). Once a full party is formed we can also discuss what time period everyone would prefer to play in as well, as this mystery can be tackled anywhere from 1952 to modern day!

Homebrew rules

While not really homebrew, we'll be using the optional rule of spending and gaining Luck to help with rolls, as well as streamlining credit rating so you don't have to do as much worrying about finances through 'grants' potentially given by interested parties within the story. I will be using a self-made 'supplies' metric for long excursions / expeditions - nothing fancy, think Heart: The City Beneath but for the whole party.

Safety

How Cult Following creates a safe table

We will be going over Lines and Veils during our party setup BEFORE session 0, within the discord server that will be created for us to chat in. All lines and veils given during this setup will be listed in the Alchemy VTT and pinned to the discord as well, and re-confirmed during Session 0 itself. Additionally, post-session we'll go over what you liked the most and any potential intrigues or goals you'd like to accomplish in the next session!
