About the adventure

This newly published dungeon adventure from Kobold Press is an homage to the expansive dungeons and black and white maps of the early days of RPG gaming. It's light on world building and heavy on big action scenes and suspense. Welcoming to new players, challenging for experienced ones, and fun for everyone!

About me

What I provide: A game that fits your group. A laid-back, friendly approach that welcomes new players. Organization, focus, and online tools to help you tell your story. My intro to d&d was three beige books in a little white box , in 1978. My first hobbit thief was trampled to death by a herd of were-elk. Despite that setback, I persevered and have been DMing, and occasionally playing, ever since. I launched ColoradoGamemaster.com in 2019 to GM professionally in person, just in time for the Great Plague to make that impossible. StartPlaying and online platforms came along at just the right time, allowing me to bring my games to people around the globe.

Character creation

Creating your character

We'll create either a TALES OF THE VALIANT (recommended) or a DUNGEONS & DRAGONS (2024) character, using the resources I'll make available on Fantasy Grounds. Characters will start at level 1 and expect to advance to level 12 by the end of the campaign. We'll build characters before game day, by appointment, so we can jump right into playing. If you're joining the game ON game day, I'll have some premade characters; you can adopt one for today. You can decide to keep that one or build a different one before the next session.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

When you join the game you'll get instructions to get into Fantasy Grounds, as well as an invitation to our Discord server. Hop in and introduce yourself!

What Keith brings to the table

This campaign is a bit gory, a bit goofy, and sometimes scary. Expect some 4th-wall breaking, and it's likely that Princess Bride quotes will be unavoidable. While there might be some deep emotional beats, I wouldn't expect a lot of them; this is more of a romp than an opera.

Homebrew rules

Mixing ToV and D&D rules can be interesting. For the most part, your character will use the rules from the ruleset you used to build them. Yes, that means some paladins were taught Divine Smite as a spell and others as a class feature, and my Counterspell might work a bit differently from yours - we had different teachers and traditions. One exception: D&D24 buffed the healing word and cure wounds spells to double their previous strength, and that's such a good idea that all characters will use the improved versions. And to keep Goodberry competitive with those as the best out of combat healing, it now makes 20 berries instead of 10. (If you are a new player the following will make no sense; it's OK!) We'll use the Luck rules from ToV instead of Heroic Inspiration. We'll compromise on potion use: a bonus action to drink one, an action to feed one to a (conscious or not) ally. We'll use the simpler and still deadly exhaustion rules from D&D24. We'll use the opposed skill rolls for Grapple and Shove, from the ToV (and the old D&D14) rules. For the ToV Weapon Options, we'll use the optional rule found in Players Guide 2, to ignore the saving throw requirements for them; a successful attack roll is enough.

Safety

How Keith creates a safe table

This is an assertively welcoming table for all genders, races, identities, neurotypes, and people. That means it's an anti-fascist table by definition, although we're here to play a game, not smash the patriarchy. Before we start playing, I'll ask you to go through the Deck of Player Safety and anonymously flag any content or situations you want to NOT have in the game (red) or want handled offscreen/ blurred (yellow). During the game there's a button to anonymously halt the game if it's going a direction that feels uncomfortable.
