About the adventure

Welcome to a new 2024 Dungeons & Dragons campaign where the story begins at level one and the world grows from your choices. This isn’t a game with every answer pre-written; instead, your characters’ backstories, goals, and roleplay will help shape the setting itself. From the moment you step into the adventure, your decisions will spark new opportunities, dangers, and mysteries that ripple outward into the larger world. The campaign is designed to be both roleplay-heavy and combat-driven, giving equal weight to dramatic storytelling and tactical encounters. Expect to play through tense battles where smart thinking can turn the tide, and just as often step into roleplay scenes where your words, alliances, and risks matter as much as your sword. Exploration is wide open from the start: multiple towns, ruins, and wild places are ready for you to discover and define. If you want to see your choices leave lasting marks: on the land, on the factions, on the fate of the people then this is the table for you. The setting is intentionally flexible: think classic fantasy foundations with room to grow. There are scattered kingdoms, old roads leading to forgotten ruins, dangerous frontiers, and cultures both familiar and strange. You might find hints of a wider cosmos | portals, lost histories, other planes | but those pieces unlock only if you seek them. Themes of survival, ambition, and discovery run throughout, with the world reflecting both the dangers you fight and the characters you play. This game is for players who want to build something together | who enjoy roleplaying their character’s voice, choices, and flaws, and who also want challenging combat where teamwork matters. New players are welcome: the rules are streamlined in the 2024 edition, and the group will learn together. Experienced players will find plenty of room to stretch, experiment, and help shape a living world that reacts to their creativity. If you’re looking for an adventure where the dice and your imagination drive the story, and where the campaign belongs to the players as much as the DM, then this is the game waiting for you.

Character creation

Creating your character

We will create characters together as a group in a free Session 0. I lean toward dice rolling for stats. I use Roll20 and dndbeyond for most things.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

I will provide links to Discord + mic, Roll20, dndbeyond campaign link.

What Cory brings to the table

What I Provide as GM Immersive Roleplay: I encourage strong character choices and interactions. Expect meaningful NPCs, a world that reacts to your actions, and chances for your backstory to shape the story. Tactical, Fair Combat: Battles will be frequent and challenging, with enemies that fight smart. I run combat by the book for clarity but allow “Rule of Cool” creativity if it fits the moment. Atmosphere & Tools: Expect a balance of drama, tension, and lighter moments that keep the game moving. Player Agency: The campaign is open-ended, built around your characters. You choose where to go, who to trust, and what battles to fight—the world grows around those decisions. Expectations: Respect at the table is non-negotiable. I welcome both new and experienced players, and I make sure everyone has time to shine. If you want a game where story and strategy both matter, this is it.

Homebrew rules

To keep the game fresh and consistent, I use a few house rules that blend older editions with modern 2024 play. Here’s what you can expect: Combat & Mechanics Potions & Poisons: Drinking/using a potion or poison is a Bonus Action (unless noted otherwise). Taking a potion for maximum effect requires an Action. Flanking: Each ally flanking provides +1 to the attack roll (instead of granting Advantage). Critical Successes: Rolling a natural 20 means maximum damage dice are added on top of the normal roll for a more impactful result. Magic & Items Residuum: Exists in raw and refined forms. Its gold cost can replace material components for spells. Expanded Spell List: Classic spells like Permanency and Disenchant Item are included, bringing back options from earlier editions. Firearms (Optional Rule) If the group agrees to include firearms, I use a custom misfire system balanced by weapon rarity—higher rarity means fewer chances of misfire. Progression Encounter Points: A hybrid system between XP and Milestone leveling. Players earn Encounter Points from meaningful battles, exploration, and roleplay; level-ups happen as the points accumulate.

Safety

How Cory creates a safe table

Your comfort at the table comes first. We’ll establish expectations together in a Session 0, where we’ll go over Lines and Veils, review safety tools, and set the tone for the campaign. Tools in Play: X, N, and O Cards (digital or in-chat): Quick signals if something is too much, needs adjusting, or is good to go. Open Door Policy: Anyone can step away from the table at any time without explanation. Deck of Player Safety + Lines & Veils: We’ll outline clear boundaries around sensitive themes and reinforce them during play. Aftercare: We’ll take a few minutes post-session to check in and make sure everyone leaves the table feeling okay. Breaks: Built-in pauses to reset, especially after heavy or tense scenes. Content Boundaries: I’ve already excluded a wide range of sensitive themes (abuse, extreme violence, sexual content, etc.) so we’re not tripping over lines mid-game. You can expect a mix of roleplay and combat without having to worry about crossing those flagged areas. Bottom line: the story should be exciting and challenging, but never at the cost of your comfort or safety.
