About the adventure

This is an introductory One-Shot for those looking to learn how to play Daggerheart! It is loosely based off of one of the suggested campaigns in the Core Rulebook, but with a much narrower, grounded focus so that you can learn the game! This will be a slightly longer session, as character creation will happen at the start for about an hour. Once we get into the game, you will take control of a character who lives in the town of Wyllin's Gulch, a place central to a recent magical goldrush in the desert called the Drylands. Among many figures who have profited from this, is one Tohamas Jones, a malicious politician and businessman who is slowly draining Wyllin's Gulch of it's funds, funneling them into his own pocket. You and your group of ragtag adventurers and outlaws decide that enough is enough! You must find what drives Tohamas Jones, where he hides out, and prevent him from causing any more harm to Wyllin's Gulch.

About me

My name is Gabe, and I am a lifelong tabletop enthusiast and a university student studying both Creative Writing and Computer Science. I currently serve in an executive leadership role for my university’s Tabletop Gaming Organization, where I organize and manage weekly events. I have learned a lot from this about guiding large groups, managing table dynamics, and ensuring everyone has a welcoming, entertaining experience. I have been a player in TTRPG games for many years now, and as of the past couple of years, I have transitioned into the GM seat with a focus on immersive worldbuilding and narrative depth. I am a writer who loves fantasy/sci-fi, and nearly everything about TTRPGs appeals to me. When the time is right, I love creating custom content, unique adversaries, and mechanics that fit my players' needs without breaking the system's core balance. The storytelling aspect is my favorite though, and I am excited to embark on these stories with you!

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation will occur at the start of the session, so that everyone can work alongside each other, ask questions, and I can explain the rules of the system as we go. You are more than welcome (and it would certainly make things go smoother) to do some investigation into the system beforehand, if you would like to investigate what character classes Daggerheart offers, or what other character options are available to you. Even ignoring the rules and coming to the session with purely a character concept will expedite our character creation process, and allow us to get playing sooner! None of this is required, however. If you show up without any ideas, or inklings of how the system works, that's okay! I will go through all of it with you. If you do wish to take some time beforehand, I recommend looking at Daggerheart's official website. Their downloads page has a shortened version of the Core Rulebook for free (titled the SRD, or System Reference Document), and provides a good overview of the system, as well as most of the rules.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Make sure you have a working Discord account, and are able to join servers, as well as send and receive messages. I use Owlbear Rodeo to visualize maps and positioning, but all you need is a working web browser that runs on Chromium. I will provide a link to the Owlbear Rodeo when needed. It is free, and requires no account to use. I have a discord server you should join for the game, so that we can communicate. The link will be provided. Additionally, make an account on the Demiplane website. This can be free - but it is where we will be hosting and making the character sheets.

What Gabe brings to the table

I will provide a safe space for you to learn the rules and system of Daggerheart! I will walk through the core rules, as well as character creation, and then we will play through a one-shot to get you used to the system! I will have a discord server for you and other players to join, so that you can communicate with me and participate in the session. I will also have a virtual tabletop (Owlbear Rodeo) so that we can visualize things as needed throughout the session. I like to do a lot with narrative - and Daggerheart does too. Even though it will be a short one-shot, the goal is to tell a story. This might happen through roleplay, or combat, depending on the characters you decide to create. I will prepare various things in advance, so that when we get into the actual game, things go smoothly and you can make whatever choices your character would be driven to make. Also, particular to Daggerheart as a system, I will provide a way for players to track my Fear (a resource the GM possesses) throughout the session.

Safety

How Gabe creates a safe table

At the start of the session, alongside our character creation, I will have everyone send me a list of Lines and Veils that they want to abide by for this session. Additionally, during the session, if anyone feels that the topics at hand are too uncomfortable or approaching discomfort, you can either dm me privately, or in our chat window, your X's and N's. And, if things are going very well, you are welcome to send O's as well. At the end of the session, especially since it will be the first time for many players engaging with Daggerheart as a system, we will be doing Stars and Wishes. Both to discuss your thoughts on the system, but also on the game and the performance of myself and your fellow players.
