About the adventure

Welcome to Barovia, a mysterious and tragic realm surrounded by deadly fog and ruled by the ancient vampire, Count Strahd von Zarovich. This campaign plunges you into a classic tale of gothic horror, where the night is a curse and the land itself is a prison from which no one escapes without the Darklord's permission. You will explore timeworn, isolated villages, the treacherous, wolf-prowled Svalich Woods, and the towering spires of Castle Ravenloft, all while being constantly watched by Strahd's spies. Our playstyle will focus heavily on atmospheric storytelling, suspense, and the psychological weight of survival. Horror here is born out of fear of the unknown, anticipation, and the realization that the world is a grim reflection of its undead master. You can expect a balance of challenging combat, intricate social interactions with superstitious locals, and difficult moral choices. We will lean into the creeping dread and suspense of an omnipresent villain who seeks to toy with you as his "guests" before moving to destroy you or turn you against one another. This campaign is perfect for players who love immersive, character-driven narratives with a dark fantasy edge, where your choices truly matter. We will explore deep, psychological horror and tragic histories, ensuring that every victory feels hard-earned. We'll hold a comprehensive Session Zero to discuss boundaries and game expectations, ensuring that while our characters experience terror and desperation, the players at the table are always having a safe, respectful, and thrilling time.

About me

Born and raised in Cape Town, I am a professional Dungeon Master dedicated to the art of collaborative, high-stakes storytelling. My life has been a long journey from a young adventurer in the Forgotten Realms to a professional creator who believes that D&D is the ultimate form of community therapy. By trade, I am a graphic designer and illustrator. I bring this professional eye to the virtual tabletop, treating every session not just as a game, but as an immersive production. I am a lifelong storyteller who believes that the "Transmutation Rule"—Never say "No"—say "Yes, and here are the consequences"—is the key to unlocking a campaign that stays with you long after the session ends. I am deeply committed to a trauma-informed, inclusive table. I prioritise community over anonymity, fostering a space where 2SLGBTQIA+, BIPOC, and neurodivergent adventurers can find a home. When you join my table, you aren't just a player—you are a contributor to a living, breathing world. What My Players Say “I was beyond spoiled having Calvin as a DM. His infectious personality, encyclopedia of NPC voices, and deep care for the game and his players is evident in every session.” “Every arc and cliffhanger is an emotional rollercoaster; Calvin is the definition of collaborative and is very diligent in making sure players feel safe.” “A needlepoint balance of everything—collaborative, creative, and permissive.”

Character creation

Creating your character

We will hold a dedicated Session Zero to handle character creation together, establishing your ties to one another, your tragic backgrounds, and your shared motives. Stats will be generated using the Standard Array or Point Buy to ensure a balanced party, and we will be starting at Level 1. Allowed Materials: We will be using the 2024 Player's Handbook alongside Ravenloft: The Horrors Within to create characters perfectly suited for this macabre setting. You are welcome to use thematic third-party content (with prior approval), but please note that high-fantasy or steampunk settings like Obojima and Eberron are strictly excluded to preserve our gothic atmosphere. Character Options: I highly encourage utilizing the Ravenloft: The Horrors Within sourcebook. You might play a macabre species like a Dhampir, Hexblood, or Reborn. Consider eerie subclasses such as the College of Spirits Bard, Grave Domain Cleric, or the Undead Patron Warlock. You can also select horror-themed backgrounds like the Haunted One, Investigator, or Mist Wanderer, which offer unique Dark Gifts or Origin feats that tie you to sinister forces. There are also vampiric player options like the Vampire Hunter feat found in Astarion's Book of Hungers if that fits your concept. Motives & Backstory: Your character needs a compelling, dark motive to be drawn into the Mists of Ravenloft. Think about what sinister secrets you harbor, what past tragedies haunt you, or what terrible bargain you might have struck. Perhaps you are a former werewolf seeking redemption, a monster hunter looking for a lost mentor, or someone plagued by a Dark Gift—a supernatural curse with sinister consequences. The darker and more intertwined your history is with the themes of fear, loss, and obsession, the better your character will fit into the tragic tapestry of Barovia.

Getting to Know You: Before we begin our adventure, I'd like to get to know you a little better. Please take a few minutes to fill out a Google Form before our session. I'm curious about what you enjoy in games, what inspires you, and any specific boundaries or preferences you have. This helps me create a safe and enjoyable experience tailored to your interests. For example, I'm personally terrified of spiders, so I won't be including them in the game unless everyone is comfortable with it.
