Meet the Game Master

Less than a year on StartPlaying

About me

Hi! I’m Ciel, a professional Dungeon Master and community organizer with several years of experience running Dungeons & Dragons 5e and 5.5e. I currently run two active Discord servers, one of which is a living world setting adrift in the Astral Sea where players explore, roleplay, and adventure across countless one-shots and campaigns. Between both servers, I manage hundreds of players, facilitate an inclusive community, and design original content that blends whimsy, cosmic horror, and high fantasy. As a Game Master, I focus on player-driven storytelling, whether it’s weaving small magical details into the world, building tense horror one-shots, or guiding epic campaigns that explore the multiverse. I enjoy creating custom magic items, potions, and narrative mechanics that reward curiosity and creativity over raw numbers. I’ve run hundreds of sessions, from one-shots to long-term campaigns, and have experience with both brand-new players and seasoned veterans. My goal is to make sure everyone at the table feels immersed, supported, and excited to tell a story together. If you’re looking for a DM who can deliver memorable adventures, a welcoming atmosphere, and plenty of creative flair, I’d love to run a game for you!

Character creation

Creating your character

Level: Characters will begin at Level 1. Method: We’ll use Point Buy or Standard Array for stats (your choice). Books & Options: Any official Wizards of the Coast sourcebooks are allowed. If you’d like to try Unearthed Arcana or homebrew content, please ask me first. Session 0 / Prep: We’ll go over character creation before the first session (or in a short Session 0 if needed). I’m happy to help brand new players build their first character step-by-step. Backstory: A short backstory is encouraged, but not required, you’ll be able to grow your character naturally during play

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Accounts: Please have a free account on Discord (for voice and text) and on Owlbear Rodeo. Tech: A working microphone and stable internet connection are required. Character Sheets: We’ll use D&D Beyond (I’ll guide you if you’re new). Discord Server: Once you sign up, you’ll receive an invite to my Discord server where session info, announcements, and character help are posted. Session 0: If you’re new, come as you are, I’ll walk you through making your first character and answer any rules questions before play begins.

What ciel brings to the table

Immersive Storytelling: I bring the world of Phandalin and the Sword Coast to life with NPC personalities, and a mix of light character voices. Balanced Gameplay: Expect a healthy mix of combat, exploration, and roleplay, enough tactical challenge for veterans, but never overwhelming for new players. Rule of Cool & Fair Play: I follow the rules as written for clarity, but I also embrace the Rule of Cool when it makes the game more fun and cinematic. Beginner-Friendly Guidance: If you’re new to D&D, I’ll walk you through mechanics step-by-step so you can learn as you play. Tools & Atmosphere: High-quality maps, tokens, and handouts on the VTT; plus background music and sound effects to set the mood. Safe & Inclusive Table: Safety tools are in place, and I strive to create a welcoming, respectful space for everyone.

Homebrew rules

Roleplay Rewards: Creative roleplay, clever problem-solving, and teamwork may earn Inspiration outside of the usual rules. Rule of Cool: If you describe something epic and it makes sense, I’ll often bend the rules a little to make it happen. (Don’t worry if you’re new, I’ll explain these tweaks as they come up, so you can focus on having fun.) Also I'm open for anything if discussed before the session.

Safety

How ciel creates a safe table

Session 0: Before we begin, we’ll go over expectations, table etiquette, and any boundaries players would like to set. X, N, & O Cards: Safety tools are always available in play, you can use a quick digital message or chat reaction to signal if something is uncomfortable (X = stop, N = change direction, O = all good). Respectful Table: I maintain a welcoming, inclusive environment where everyone gets a chance to shine, and harassment or disrespect is never tolerated. Aftercare: At the end of each session, I’ll check in with the group to see how everyone felt about the session, making sure the game stays fun and comfortable for all.
