MHA homebrew — pre-canon — vigilantes at the dawn of quirks

With great power comes great responsibility, but as superpowers called quirks gradually become commonplace, not everyone chooses to use them wisely.

About the adventure

Less than 50 years ago, a baby was born in Qing Qing City, China who radiated light. similar mutations and uncanny abilities began to appear the world over. Now, the second generation of these miraculous individuals is growing up, and its clear that "quirks" are here to stay. Unfortunately, not all of those who have quirks use them responsibly, and many leverage their powers to pursue a life of crime. That's where you come in! To protect the citizens of Japan from those who would use their quirks for evil, and to keep the streets of your city safe, you and your fellow players have donned masks and aliases, becoming more than ordinary people, becoming symbols of peace and justice, and going beyond! This game will give you the opportunity to explore a period in the MHA timeline that we don't see much of, and have you personally help establish the Hero Society that's so prevalent in the series proper. We'll begin with a session zero to create characters and establish everyone's expectations for the campaign, as well as deciding on a specific city for the campaign to take place. The campaign will have a story arc for each player that's tailored to their character's specific goals, each interspersed with self-contained adventures to maintain engagement. Leveling will be based on character and quirk development that takes place during roleplay, meaning players may level up at different times, rather than everyone advancing together, and hopefully fostering teamwork as higher-level players help their allies advance and reach higher heights together!

About me

I'm a queer and neurodivergent writer, performance artist, and aspiring lawyer. I like to put my years of acting classes to work by giving my NPCs strong personalities and facilitating fast-paced in-character dialogues. I believe that with enough creativity and whimsy in your heart, every game is a role-playing game—just ask anyone who's ever played Monopoly with me.

Character creation

Creating your character

There will be a session zero where the players will all create characters together. At most, you can bring a basic character concept and a quirk idea to refine, but if you come with nothing, Me and your fellow players will work with you to create a character that fits with the group. ^.^ I'll be adapting this campaign using bits and pieces of various fan-written modules.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

I'll be running this game through Discord, so please make a free account if you don't already have one, and join the following server: https://discord.gg/CXec3fUxCM Not required, but if you're interested in reading it, I'll be loosely adapting the following module: https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/k8WMDBMV7KAq

What E brings to the table

There is a Lines and Veils document where you can anonymously let me know if anything on the list is an iffy topic for you so I can modify the module as needed: https://linesandveils.com/session/TUTKYU I utilize character voices, the occasional musical sting, and DMs inspiration (which is different from heroic inspiration, but I'll explain that in game.) As a long-time comic book fan and someone who's been following MHA since the start of the anime, I have a deep love for the genre and especially the creativity that goes into it, and I will always encourage that in my players. My games put the most emphasis on role-playing, followed by character building, strategy, and lastly combat. No matter how detailed your backstory, you'll likely have to make up something about your character on the spot, so be prepared.

How E creates a safe table

Lines and Veils: https://linesandveils.com/session/TUTKYU Session 0: In addition to character creation, we'll spend some time during session 0 to discuss expectations for play and establish content boundaries. Superhero media, MHA included, can touch on some really dark topics, so I want to make sure I know what everyone's comfortable with before going into the campaign. Open door: If at any point, a player feels uncomfortable or needs to take a breather, they will be allowed to step away from the game completely free of judgement, no questions asked. If and when they return, I'll give a quick, non-graphic recap of what they missed so they don't have to worry about missing anything important. Safe Word: Xylophone is the safe-word in my RPG Discord Server. Unless a character uses a Xylophone, in which case I'll come up with something else. Debrief: When the session ends, with what time remains, I'll lead a debrief session to discuss the game and check-in with everyone about how they felt. This is optional for players, so you can leave early if you're not interested. Note: The tagged content warnings are not guarantees, nor exclusive. I only tagged the main ones I believe might apply. Actual content will be discussed during session 0, at which time, the CW tags will be updated to reflect the agreed-upon content.
