About the adventure

The Fall of Cael Morrow The Calamity has come. For centuries, the shining city of Cael Morrow has stood as a beacon of progress, arcane innovation, and hope. Now, as the war between the gods and their Betrayer counterparts reaches its devastating climax, that hope is dying. The streets burn, the earth fractures, and the sea itself rises to claim the city. While legends clash in a battle that will be remembered throughout history, countless innocents are left to face the end alone. You are not the heroes history remembers. You are soldiers, adventurers, mages, healers, and ordinary people caught in an extraordinary disaster. As catastrophe unfolds around you, your mission is simple: save as many lives as possible before Cael Morrow is lost forever. Navigate collapsing districts, brave divine destruction, make impossible choices, and decide what is worth preserving when an entire civilization stands on the brink of annihilation. This is a roleplay-focused one-shot set during one of Exandria's most pivotal moments. While combat and danger are certain, the heart of the story lies in heroism, sacrifice, and the choices made when victory is no longer possible. Expect cinematic encounters, moral dilemmas, desperate rescues, and a front row seat to the final hours of a city doomed to drown. No prior knowledge of Critical Role, Exandria, or Call of the Netherdeep is required. If you enjoy high-stakes storytelling, character-driven decisions, and tales of hope shining brightest in the darkest moments, this adventure is for you.

Character creation

Creating your character

This adventure is designed to be accessible for both new and experienced players. To help new players jump right into the action, I will have a selection of pre-generated Level 9 characters available, covering a variety of classes and playstyles. These characters use the 2014 class rules while incorporating select options from the 2024 ruleset, giving players a taste of both systems without adding unnecessary complexity. Players who wish to create their own characters are more than welcome to do so. Characters should use the 2014 base classes to ensure compatibility with Critical Role content and setting-specific options. Character sheets will be created through D&D Beyond, and a campaign link will be provided once the group is assembled. For this adventure, characters will begin at Level 9. Ability scores will use the Standard Array, and all characters will receive maximum hit points at each level. In addition, every character may select one Origin Feat from the 2024 ruleset. 2024 healing spells are automatically approved. Other 2024 spells, feats, or character options are generally welcome as well, though I ask that you check with me beforehand so we can keep everything running smoothly. Once the group is formed, you'll receive access to my Discord server where you can ask questions, discuss character ideas, and get to know your fellow adventurers before game day.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

To participate in this adventure, you will need both a Discord account and a D&D Beyond account. Discord will serve as our primary hub for communication, including Session 0 scheduling, pre-game discussions, announcements, and voice chat during the game. Once you join, you'll also gain access to my Discord server where you can ask questions, meet the other players, and prepare for the adventure. For gameplay, character sheets will be managed through D&D Beyond, and all maps and combat encounters will be run using D&D Beyond Maps. This setup keeps everything streamlined and beginner-friendly, allowing us to focus on the story and the adventure rather than juggling multiple platforms.

What AarontheBaron brings to the table

I strive to create an immersive experience through curated music, ambient soundscapes, distinct NPC voices, and detailed worldbuilding. After the game, you'll receive a recording of the session along with a PDF recap of key events, giving you a lasting record of your adventure. My combat style balances tactical decision-making with cinematic fun. Creative problem solving is always encouraged, and I love seeing players use their spells, abilities, and surroundings in unexpected ways. While I value the rules and use them as a foundation, I'm also a firm believer that great moments can be worth bending toward the Rule of Cool when the situation calls for it. One final note: my games often run a little longer than their listed runtime. I enjoy giving players room to explore, roleplay, and fully engage with the story rather than rushing to the finish line.

Homebrew rules

To keep combat moving at a cinematic pace, potions may be consumed as a bonus action rather than an action. This allows players to stay engaged in the fight while still making meaningful tactical decisions. Additionally, death saving throws will be rolled privately between the affected player and the DM. The rest of the party will not know whether their ally is hanging on by a thread or moments away from death. This small change adds tension, urgency, and drama to combat, encouraging characters to act on what they see in the moment rather than on information their characters wouldn't realistically possess.

Safety

How AarontheBaron creates a safe table

Safety is the highest priority at my table. While I love telling meaningful and emotional stories, D&D is ultimately a game, and for many of us, a chance to escape from the stresses of everyday life. We can explore powerful themes without crossing personal boundaries, and I am committed to creating a welcoming environment where everyone feels comfortable participating. Before the adventure begins, we'll hold a complimentary Session 0. This is a great opportunity for new players to experience what a proper Session 0 looks like while allowing the group to establish expectations, discuss table etiquette, and set boundaries. We'll use a simple Yellow Card and Red Card system for sensitive topics. A Yellow Card means "let's slow down or move away from this subject," while a Red Card means "stop immediately and move on." Even with a Session 0, unexpected topics can arise. If something during the game makes you uncomfortable, you are always welcome to send me a private message on Discord. No explanations are required. We'll adjust course and continue the adventure in a way that respects everyone's comfort levels. After the one-shot concludes, we'll spend a few minutes debriefing as a group. This gives everyone a chance to share their favorite moments, discuss any concerns, and provide feedback so I can continue creating the best possible experience for my players.
