About the adventure
Ravenloft, the Land of the Mists, collects travelers from all the realms, often gathering those whose souls are lacking; or at the very least in desperate need of a reckoning. You are one of those souls: not evil, not irredeemable. Just someone who took too many steps past the boundary that society believes to be acceptable. You devotion to your cause, your absolute focus on your task, your drive to succeed, have taken you beyond what the world was ready for you to do. Now you find yourself thrown into a strange and twisted realm, with strangers, fighting for your life and facing hard truths. After the Mists have shone a light into the deepest, darkest recesses of your soul, will you even recognize yourself in the mirror? Will you like what you see? The Darker Path is a journey into what makes Ravenloft the most terrifying - how it reflects your own faults back ten-fold. This journey will be role-play heavy, with ample combat, mysteries pertinent to each character's personal story, with a heavy dose of horror. You don't have to be familiar with Ravenloft to enjoy this game, but being open to horror themes is a good place to start. Some of the players have many years of experience, and are adept at helping less experienced players enjoy the table. My table is open to all - LGBTQIA+, Neurodivergent, Disabled - anyone who is willing to accept everyone as they are without qualification. I also have access to Hero's Unlimited that provides mechanics for many types of Neurodivergence and disability - so characters can be as self-representative as you so choose.

About me
Hello my friends! Welcome to Storytime with Uncle Casey, I'm Casey, your fun Uncle for what I hope is your next adventure. I do my best to run a welcoming, safe, and accessible table; I believe creating felt safety encourages deeper, more enjoyable game experiences. To that end, I require my players to be open and affirming of everyone’s right to exist and be who they are without judgement. For characters I don’t limit species, and players are free to make their characters as self-representative (or not) as they choose. I have resources available (Unlimited Heroics, Combat Wheelchair, etc.) that can serve as a guide for any non-core mechanics you’d like to integrate. I want you to feel free to be you. Or be someone completely different. It’s your game. Me, a Brief History: (Reading optional) I started playing TTRPG's during junior high and high school, back in the 80's and early 90's. I joined a friend's D&D game, then started DMing for my friends. We tried out Talislanta, Rifts, Cyberpunk, Vampire, Aliens, Robotech and a few I've probably forgotten. Then life happened. I eventually earned a degree in theatre and a certification in stage combat choreography, I caught an arrow to my knee (got married), did community, amateur and professional theatre, adopted our children, left theatre to work with foster and adoptive families, that turned I into educating families about trauma and it's effects on our brains and bodies. I started playing D&D again in 2015 with 5e - my dice were literally older than the other players at the table. (side-note: I am a notorious dice goblin). It wasn't long until I started DMing again, both in-person and online. I've met some amazing people from around the world playing D&D online, as well as my fair share of cautionary tales. My strengths as a DM - I'm open and caring and belive in self-agency for players and characters. I'm big into backstories and love integrating them into campaigns. I'm always down to work with players, embellishing and expanding their character histories. Do you want a convoluted, world-shaking secret from your past threaten to rip apart the very fabric of reality? I'm in. Of course less dramatic backstories are welcome as well - some players like to focus on what's ahead of them, rather than what's in the past. I am flexible. I create as much of an open-world environment as possible, encouraging player agency and choice. I'm good at rolling with a sudden shift in party objectives. I encourage players, especially experienced players, to immerse themselves in their characters' moment, know what they know, and experience the game with fresh eyes. Yes, you probably are steeped in game lore and monster stats, and how refreshing would it be to just lose yourself in the moment and forget the meta-knowledge in the moment?

Creating your character
We will create characters in the DndBeyond Campaign on DndBeyond. I have access to all currently available content. Roll for stats (4d6 drop lowest) rolling two complete sets and choosing which set is better. No restrictions on Species, Class, and only one restriction of Subclasses (Torture Conclave Ranger). - please note that due to personal reasons black-powder and bullets aren't a thing. All firearms in my game deal alternative damage such as force or elemental. Characters can be from any published setting, including partnered content - the Mists can pull people from anywhere. The party is currently level 6, on the cusp of 7, starting equipment plus the following magic items: 1 rare item, 1 uncommon, 2 common magical items. (I have veto power just in case there is some game-breaking uncommon items from partnered content I haven't discovered yet.) Multiclassing after level 3 only and must make a 3 level commitment to the multiclass - no taking a single dip into Rogue, Barbarian, etc to get their sneak attack or rage, then bailing. If building a multiclass character, your original class has to be selected first for levels 1 through 3.
Hi, our Dragonborn Monk had a schedule change and we're open for another player! We have a Reanimator Artificer and his faithful attorney / reanimated companion, an Aerani Elf Necromancer and their skeletons animated with positive necromantic energy, a very dedicated and outspoken Oath of Devotion Paladin, and a Heroic Sorcerer who brings a unique brand of squishiness to the front line! Come join them as they find themselves in the Domains of Dread and learn why, and how to navigate the mists for a chance to return home. Open to all Classes (included partnered content) and all subclasses (except one, it's my only real restriction - contact me to find out why), and open to all species (Currently we have a gnome, two elves, and an aasimar). So far the group has only been in Borca, land of noble intrigue and deceit.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
Discord is used for audio (and optional video). Roll20 for MAPS, DndBeyond for character sheets and rolling, Beyond 20 browser extension to facilitate connection between DndBeyond and Roll20.
What Storytime with Uncle Casey brings to the table
I provide all currently available content on DndBeyond, create or source maps for the games, can create character tokens. I try to stick to RAW because it gives each character the chance to shine in their respective areas and keeps the playing field even: between the player characters and myself as the DM - to ensure everyone has a comparable experience. I will employ the rule of cool for flavor, and occasional mechanical benefit. I work hard to provide detailed descriptions of what your characters see and hear, who they are facing, and what confronts them. Being anglo, I stick to using anglo-related accents to avoid using any stereotypes of other cultures.
Homebrew rules
No blackpowder /bullets - firearms base damage type is force instead of piercing - modifiers for other damage types are still applicable. Backpacks - you can ignore ration, water, and torch weight when loading your standard Backpack. I'll give a 10ish pounds grace for other items. You cannot carry two backpacks. You can have multiple pouches No underage characters, please- I won't put children in peril, and I expect all PC's to be of a majority age for their species No taking 1 level of Rogue, etc, just for Sneak Attack, etc- at least 3 consecutive levels of any secondary class OPPORTUNITY ATTACKS: cannot be used on allies. Regarding hostile allies: combat is "Us vs. Them", when an ally is compelled to, or otherwise attacks or makes known their intent to attack the party, they become a "Them" and are fair game

Safety
How Storytime with Uncle Casey creates a safe table
Ravenloft is a horror setting and contains many disturbing themes. There will be a pre-session 1 survey of lines and veils so I as the DM know what topics are off limits, etc. We will also have X cards in Roll20 so Players can stop a scene at any time. I am also open to being interrupted if something seems off or we are approaching a topic that may not have come up before. Also - I do not allow sexual harassment at table or in-game. I don't want to think about human trafficking, rape, or harassment during my game-time. It's not included in my games. Brothels are okay, as it's all consenting adults. The list of content warnings will be rather long in an attempt at covering all of the materials covered in published Ravenloft books.
