About the adventure

The mainland runs on the bones of a long forgotten, dead empire. Wars are waged over excavation sites for ancient technology, remnants are used to fuel new advancements in science and understanding. But when the echoes of the forgotten are disturbed, not everything that glistens is gold. Mist they call it, a toxic and corrupting substance that twists flora and fauna alike into monsters. When it first started appearing it was only in isolated pockets. Limited only to the higher density excavation sites and surrounding areas. It was easy to contain, confining it behind walls of steel and trenches. But soon, entire regions fell as the mist slowly spread. Whole cities enveloped by it and quarantined off from the rest of the world. Rumors spread of a continent appearing, visible to all, but reachable by none. Storms ravage the seas, and great beasts lurk the waters, destroying any ships that come too close. A strange citadel floats in the sky, high above the clouds, a great spire coiled below holding it aloft. Its purpose and origin unknown. Its shadow falls upon the ground where the Mist spreads and those who have dared to approach it are never seen again. Advancement halts, excavations are banned, and the world stalls, waiting and watching with baited breath as the Mist draws closer to all. Some return to the old ways, forsaking all technology; others come to worship the Mist, seeking to hasten its advancement; and others still think they can control it. This is how it has been for hundreds of years. This is the world in which you find yourself. Welcome to the Echoes of the Forgotten Fabula Ultima Campaign. A beginner friendly introduction to the system. Designed as a love letter to the classic era of JRPGs and inspired by games like Breath of Fire and the Final Fantasy series. This campaign is built for first-time players and veterans alike. Learn to play the system and explore a richly fleshed out world where you have control over everything that happens using Fabula Points and a "fail-forward" philosophy. The story adapts how you want it to, rather than it grinding to a halt. So what are you waiting for? Come say hello and get ready for your next big adventure!

About me

Hey there! Welcome to the Laughing Goat Tavern, I'm the barkeep and owner, Sylus - or at least that is the name I have adopted over the years. My real name has been lost to time. I have been the owner of this fine establishment for nearly 20 years and the stories I have collected in those years are too vast to recount here. My more frequent patrons tell me I should offer my stories and tales to a wider audience, so I have decided to join in this lovely guild of storytellers in the hopes of providing good times to those who seek it. I am well versed in many genres be it Action, Comedy, Mischief, Historical, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Romance, the odd Political Intrigue tale, and even Horror from time to time. I wouldn't say I have a particular fondness for any one type of tale, but my skills sway heavier towards lower fantasy, realism where survival is the key piece - stories that revolve around the lesser known heroes often not acknowledged. Heroes chosen by Gods are always good fun, but I find more enjoyment in giving praise to the group of citizens who rally against a goblin hoard or the local youths who banded together against a corrupt official - anyone who sets out to make a difference deserves to be recognized, no matter how small it may seem. My preferred vessel of telling these tales is through Foundry VTT/Discord using Fabula Ultima or a lighter version of 5e. So, if it takes your fancy, why not drop by sometime? I am sure you could bring a tale or two yourself.

Character creation

Creating your character

During Session 0 we will cover character creation and introduce them into the world, defining their positions and roles and how they fit together. We will only be using classes from the Core Rulebook for initial character classes starting at the base level 5. Should you wish to prepare a character ahead of time, that is perfectly fine, but keep in mind that some aspects of the character may not fit or may need to change once the whole group is together. I will not be using Playtest materials for this campaign for classes, but I will be allowing the use of other Atlases as we progress to higher levels. Homebrewed classes provided by the Project FU module exist, and are an option to be added into the pool at later levels as well, but must be agreed upon by the group during Session 0. Time will be provided to look over them and discuss.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

No purchases are needed for anything at all. A discord link will be provided to you via email which will bring you to my custom server. You will find a specially dedicated setup for the campaign there that will contain a pinned link to the Foundry VTT server. I have all of the Official Publications uploaded to Foundry VTT and easily referenced should you not have them yourself.

What Sylus brings to the table

I offer a no-strings attached free Session 0 & 1 so that you can experience the system and what it offers, meet the party and myself, build out a character and the world, and then enjoy an example of what to expect moving forward with a full session. Using Foundry VTT I will bring you a fully detailed and animated bestiary featuring monster and NPC assets from several series such as Breath of Fire and Final Fantasy; a handcrafted custom built mechanical UI using Project FU and several quality of life add-ons as well as custom built Macros and scenes; and an optimized scene system to minimize loading and transitions for a fluid experience. Experience ambient and background music alongside side-view classic JRPG combat scenes rendered over beautiful backdrops across several unique environments; dungeon maps and main location backdrops with active speaker and room/location images; and on scene information panels to keep you informed on the current objectives, locations, and threat levels of each area. I will be keeping a log of all locations, NPCs, events, and enemies that you face inside the Project FU Codex for easy searching and reading. Every enemy and action in the game is handled by several macros and modules that allow for single click action choice and targeting based on a weighted list of actions on each enemy. All results will happen automatically and appear in the chat bar to review and accept ensuring fast and fluid combat, even with the custom actions for the monsters. In Discord, I will be providing an out of server registry of all the Journal Entries so that you will be able to read up on all of the characters, enemies, locations, treasures, and any events you have encountered during the campaign. I also have several hundred high quality sprites from the Final Fantasy Brave Exvius mobile game that can be used for character sprites. Fully animated and ready to drop into the game should you wish.

Homebrew rules

My main homebrewed rule that I use is that you have no limit on the number of bonds that you can have. While I still limit it to only being a strength of 3 maximum, you can have and form as many bonds as you desire. I also allow bonds with locations and enemies as well. I also use a general rule of if you spend a Fabula Point to reroll something, and it still fails, you may reroll again for free once. If you fail again, you must spend another fabula point to reroll again or push. That new spent point allows for another free reroll. I like using Fabula Points for story development and fun, not as a reroll engine - so every attempt gets 1 freebie if it still fails. Several of my monsters are handcrafted with hundreds of unique abilities, spells, skills, and effects to best represent them as they are depicted within their respective media. So there are several homebrewed options, not all of which are allowed by Chimerists. I also adopt a much more loose use of the rules, opting for a heavier "if it is cool or if it fits the story" mindset on several things that I couldn't even attempt to list here since I don't usually know them until the happen.

Safety

How Sylus creates a safe table

I have several sets of tools available for use within Foundry VTT that I use. A consent form of sorts will be provided to each player that has a wide variety of topics and subjects to give boundaries on as well as several blank spaces to write in anything that is not already covered. And I also provide an X's and O's style system with a safety button built into the game. It will flash up a card on everyone's screen as a warning should something stray too far or when I feel that there is something coming that might blur the lines a little bit, I will ask for everyone to submit their cards so I can get a vote or see how to proceed. I provide 1 10min break at the 2hr mark, by schedule, but this can be increased if needed, or should you need to step away there is a breaktime module that you can use to show yourself as stepping away should you not wish us to pause the game. In general I try to keep things relatively within the bounds of what you would expect from a classic JRPG. Some broad topics will be discussed during session 0 such as language in and above game, down-time talk, or break conversations, etc... I am also always available before, during, or after the session to message or stay and talk and you should never feel concerned or embarrassed about bringing something up to me. I encourage and welcome feedback of all kinds, provided it is given in a non-aggressive way.
