About the adventure

The Solar System is recovering from a vast inter-planetary war, under the guidance of the Astral Federation, a coalition of forces from each planet, dedicated to governance and protection of all peoples from cosmic horrors called Breachers. But when the Astral Federation outlaws a vital industry, millions turn to piracy. And when that same industry threatens the safety of the system, a person thought long lost to this world makes their presence known, igniting a manhunt that spans the stars. Thematically, this campaign is very much something along the lines of Arcane and Firefly meets One Piece with piracy, magic, and technology melding into one big mixing pot of fun and adventure! As for how this campaign is played, its very much a mix of "villain of the week" and destination arcs, with plot beats being focused on specific people or local crisis's, while maintaining a whimsical adventurous mood. I like to do a thorough mix of roleplay and combat, but most of my players tend to lend towards roleplay. I encourage players of any experience level, but this might be a confusing campaign for newcomers to join due to its homebrew and complexity.

About me

Hello! My name is Kaz! I use both He/Him and She/Her pronouns! I've been playing D&D since 2017 in the sixth grade! Ever since, I've been a Forever DM, running campaigns for friends and as a part of multiple D&D clubs through highschool and college! I love storytelling and I'm a theatre nerd, so playing D&D is a natural experience for me. I have most of my experience in D&D 5e, but I've dabbled in other formats like Call of Cthulu! Additionally, I'm currently on the Exec Board of my college's TTRPG Club. Off the table, I work in an engineering and design lab at my college, and I love to write, listen to dad rock, and paint miniatures! I'm also learning how to cook better, and I will never turn down an opportunity to act on stage, should one present itself. Additionally, I'm a HUGE nerd about medieval history, and I have a full set of half-plate knight's armor, which I (of course) use for Renaissance Faires. Most of the stories I've written are set in a high fantasy/grimdark world, but I've been expanding as of late into more light hearted adventures. I draw inspiration from the media I engage with, which is mostly video games like Destiny 2 and Warhammer, but I'm always eager to pick up a new book for inspiration.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation is something I like to do as a group or individually with each player! By all means, take a look at the lore doc or story and come up with a character, but I'll give it the once over before I approve your backstory/character. One thing I am firm on, however, is that your character's personality and the way you intend to play them has to be something that everyone in the campaign is comfortable with, and that their story somehow ties into the campaign story. Other than that, I encourage your creativity! Stat/content wise, I'm okay with pretty much anything, including homebrew and unearthed arcana just as long as my players run it by me first! (I'm pretty accepting though, so odds are I'll allow it or rework it if its rlly busted.)

What to expect

Preparing for the session

For this campaign, you'll only need three things! 1) Discord Account - Friend me! kazk2501 2) Roll 20 Account 3) Someway to show me your character sheet (fillable pdf, Roll20 virtual sheet, etc etc). You don't have to have it filled out before joining, as I can help you with it or help you find a method of tracking it that you like.

What Kaz brings to the table

I will provide a discord server to track all the campaign information such as lore documents, as well as a way for us to communicate about your character prior to session. This is also how we'll be having our sessions, in discord calls on the server. Additionally, I'll provide a Roll20 game for the battle map/display of the game and everything that goes with it. I've also got a small team of artists I commission to come up with art for the campaign occasionally, but I also welcome any art you'd like to draw about your character or design.

Homebrew rules

I mainly follow Rule of Cool, but the only specificially outlined rules I have are: - Critical Hits do either Double Damage or Max Damage, your choice - Inspiration stacks infinitely (I think its dumb that it doesn't) - At the start of each session, I award inspiration to whoever tells the best joke, so I can steal it for my own personal collection - I will occasionally give advantage/disadvantage or bonuses/minuses based on roleplay or situational events Everything else is more on a case by case basis.

How Kaz creates a safe table

I send out a form at the start of each campaign that asks players to tell me a little bit about themselves, to get a brief idea of what they're like. In this form, I include a section about Lines and Veils, both my personal ones, and any that they may have. As for X cards, I invite my players to say X or "Stop" or "Rewind" any time they feel uncomfortable, at which point we take a brief break and I check in with that player. If a session covered a particularly emotional or distressing topic for their character, I'll check in with that player both during and after session to make sure they're doing alright, and provide a space for them to talk if they need to, or just someone to vent to.
