About the adventure

The sun has not risen over Icewind Dale in more than two years. Auril the Frostmaiden has buried the North beneath an endless winter where blizzards swallow entire roads, supplies grow scarce, and survival becomes harder with every passing day. Now strange things are beginning to stir beneath the ice and within the storm, and the people of Ten-Towns are growing desperate enough to do whatever it takes to see another dawn. Whispers Beneath the Glacier is my dark fantasy take on Rime of the Frostmaiden, expanding the horror, mystery, and survival elements of the frozen North. This campaign focuses on atmospheric storytelling, exploration, roleplay, tense survival, and uncovering ancient secrets hidden beneath the ice. Inspired by The Thing, The Terror, and classic dark fantasy horror, this game is for players who enjoy isolation, creeping dread, dangerous journeys, desperate choices, and mysteries that grow darker the deeper you dig into them.

About me

Greetings, humans! I’ve been playing Dungeons and Dragons 5E for about five years, and I started my Dungeon Master journey just a few months after my first game. What began as a single session in our normal group soon grew into a weekly homebrewed campaign with four dedicated players that ran for two years before scheduling caught up with us. Since then, I’ve run a mix of campaigns and one-shots, always looking for new stories to tell and new ways to challenge my players. What keeps me coming back is the collaboration. The best moments often start small, then grow into something unforgettable as everyone at the table builds on them. I aim to create games where players can take risks, contribute to the world, and shape the story in meaningful ways. My style is rule of cool with a strong respect for rules as written. The rules keep things fair, but they should never get in the way of a great idea. If you bring creativity, I’ll work with you to make it shine. I don’t ban official content; it’s my job to design around it, not restrict it. You can expect a strong focus on atmosphere, especially in horror-themed games. I like to build slow-burning dread, unsettling mysteries, and moments that stick with you long after the session ends, balanced with just enough humor and levity to keep things fun. I strive to create a welcoming, respectful, and collaborative table for everyone, whether you’re brand new or a seasoned player.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation happens together in a free Session Zero. We’ll start at level 1 using Point Buy or Rolled Group Standard Array, and characters will be built on Roll20. I recommend bringing 2-3 character ideas to the table. Though I will do my best to ensure everyone gets to play what they want. We primarily use the 2024 D&D rules, with access to most 2014 content as well. Where both versions exist, we default to 2024 rules unless the table agrees otherwise.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Preparing for this game is simple, and support is always available if you need it. You don’t need any special software or prior experience... just a little time to get set up before the campaign begins. Before the first session, players will need: A free Roll20 account to access the virtual tabletop, character sheets, maps, and dice. A free Discord account for voice chat and between-session communication. A working microphone and stable internet connection for voice play. Once you join the game, you’ll receive invitations to both the Roll20 game and the Discord server. All gameplay takes place online, and no additional downloads or paid subscriptions are required. If you’re new to Roll20 or Discord, I’m happy to help you get comfortable with the tools ahead of time. Character creation and technical setup are handled during a free Session 0, where we’ll make sure character sheets are working correctly and everyone knows how to use the table. By the time Session 1 begins, the focus will be on surviving Icewind Dale... not wrestling with technology. If any questions or technical issues come up, please ask. The goal is a smooth, focused table where preparation supports immersion and keeps the game moving once the adventure begins.

What Robbie brings to the table

I aim to run immersive, atmospheric games that lean heavily into tone, tension, and player-driven storytelling. The frozen North is dangerous and unpredictable, and I like to let that environment feel like a constant presence at the table—whether you’re crossing blizzard-swept tundra or uncovering something better left buried. I try to use character voices when it fits the moment (especially for recurring NPCs), and I incorporate ambient music and soundscapes to help reinforce mood during exploration, travel, and key scenes. Combat tends to be tactical and meaningful, with an emphasis on positioning, resource management, and consequences—but I always aim to keep it dynamic and cinematic rather than slow or overly rigid. Rules-wise, I lean toward Rules as Written as a foundation, but I’m not afraid to flex for pacing, creativity, or memorable moments. If a cool, story-driven idea makes sense and doesn’t break the game, I’m usually in favor of trying it. Player agency is important at my table, and I enjoy seeing characters surprise me as much as I enjoy surprising them. Overall, you can expect a game that balances survival tension, mystery, and character-focused storytelling—where choices matter, the world reacts, and even small victories feel earned in a place that doesn’t easily give them.

Homebrew rules

- Crunchy Crits: Critical hits deal maximum damage from the damage dice + modifiers, plus an additional roll of the damage dice. Example: 1d8+4 becomes 12 + 1d8. This applies to both players and monsters, keeping combat deadly, impactful, and consistent. - Death Saves (Hidden Rolls): Death saving throws are made in secret and whispered to the DM. Players are discouraged from sharing their results. This is intended to heighten tension and reinforce the survival-horror tone of the campaign. - Flanking: Flanking grants advantage to both players and monsters when applicable. - Spell Components: Material components with a listed cost are required. If a spell consumes the component, the gold cost may be used as a substitute. - Encumbrance: Not strictly tracked, but carried weight should remain reasonable and narratively believable. - Ammunition: Non-magical ammunition is treated as effectively unlimited for ease of play. - Food & Survival: Food will be tracked due to the nature of the setting, and survival resources will matter.

Safety

How Robbie creates a safe table

Player comfort and safety are a priority at my table, especially given the darker survival-horror themes of the campaign. During Session 0, we will go over Lines & Veils (hard limits and fade-to-black content), along with general table expectations, tone, and boundaries so everyone is on the same page before play begins. This is also where we’ll align on what kind of themes players are excited about and what should be avoided. I maintain an open-door DM policy—if anything comes up during or after sessions, you’re encouraged to reach out to me directly at any time. Concerns, adjustments, or boundary updates are always welcome and will be handled respectfully and without judgment.
