About the adventure

The city of Drakkenheim holds the keys to great power - and the fate of the world! Who will brave the Haze and risk contamination to get that power? Drakkenheim is a cosmic horror and high fantasy campaign. Five factions vie for the power inside Drakkenheim. Your characters will decide who to help and who to hinder as you strive to reach your own personal goals in the city. You will recover mystical artifacts and religious relics, investigate mysteries and meet the strange and dangerous denizens of Drakkenheim. But will you fall prey to the allure of power and the contamination which haunts the city? Drakkenheim is a campaign where the party's decisions and accomplishments have weighty consequences for NPCs, factions, and the world at large. Factions are fully realized groups with their own histories, characters, goals, methods, and abilities, and they make the world feel deeply immersive.

About me

Hello! I'm Neal, and I've been playing and running RPGs since high school. I love roleplaying and entertaining, and I've pursued a career in adjacent fields such as theatre and education, but with the rise of online gaming I've decided to take my hobby to the next level. I was born and raised in New York, where I worked in the theatre industry throughout my 20's until I decided it was time for a more radical change in scenery. I moved to the country of Georgia and became a teacher, drawing on my theatre experience to teach subjects such as Design and Drama. After more than a decade teaching, the pandemic showed me that remote work was definitely my jam. I've been running games online since 2020 and I love the experience. I've set up a discord server and a cloud-hosted Foundry VTT installation, which I've tailored to my DMing style using a variety of add-on modules. My games are designed to be approachable and beginner-friendly and to foster meaningful roleplaying experiences in which player characters have an important place in the setting and players have the opportunity to add to the world with creative input.

Character creation

Creating your character

We will create characters using D&D Beyond, according to the D&D 5.5e (2024) rules. Drakkenheim backgrounds are encouraged. If you take a Drakkenheim background you will also start with one Origin Feat of your choice, as per 5.5e rules. Players will have access to Sebastian Crowe's Guide to Drakkenheim so you will be able to read about the setting if you are interested in diving into the deep lore of the world of Drakkenheim.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players will need a web browser and microphone. We will play on Discord and on Foundry using Sqyre hosting.

What Neal Z brings to the table

I will provide a fully-loaded VTT with the official Drakkenheim module and various enhancements and extras. This includes full color maps and tokens both from the official Drakkenheim campaign setting and from third party creators. I enjoy doing character voices and improv, and my games provide ample opportunities for roleplay. I also run a variety of combat and non-combat encounters with a range of challenge levels, to intensify the feeling of danger and the sense of accomplishment players get when they succeed.

Homebrew rules

Crunchy Crits - critical dice do max damage. Healing Potions - if you take a healing potion as a full action, you gain max healing Fast Combat - once we're in combat, players should act quickly, stay in character, and commit to their actions without takebacks.
