About the adventure

Duskvol is a city sitting in a dark sea, the sun lays shattered in the sky, and the constant turmoil of the unquiet dead call out with endless breath. Protected only by the spires of the Ghost Field, Duskvol can best be described as an Victorian Industrial city. Carved into various districts filled with both rich and poor, the metropolis sprawls out as the only source of light within a world cast into darkness. A great cataclysm broke the sun, and it is only through the blood of great demons, the souls of those lost, and the churning of hundreds of furnaces that those within the city manage to scrape together any lustre. Life in Duskvol can be grand for those who have, but unfortunately you're one of the have nots. Whether your life began within the fineries of a manor or the very gutters matters not. Ones station in the city can change on the flip of a coin, and those who have the most opportunity are simply those who are willing to seize it. Gather your crew, find your next job, and see just how far you can go. ------ This game is intended to be an ongoing and running Blades in the Dark Campaign that players can Drop In and Out of. Players will create their characters and join the crew, find and do different jobs, and slowly climb through the ranks of Duskvol. Discovering their place as criminals, aristocrats, or perhaps even a new Cult driven to prominence by their unknown Gods. When you can't make a session, your character will simply be off doing a job or resting for a week. The intention being easy play that lets everyone jump in as they want and are able to. Though I'll create every jumping off point, my hope is that together we'll build our own version of Duskvol. Everyone contributing and building up a legend as we define everything from the districts of the city to the people who live in it and maybe even beyond. This game is entirely open to all levels of player from beginner to pro, inclusive all, and following the greatest Golden Rule of all "Don't be a dick".

About me

Hi there! My name is Chris! I'm a twice transplanted German formerly living in the US and now moved to the United Kingdom. I've played one form of TTRPG or another for nearly two decades now. Starting originally with Dungeons and Dragons Fourth Edition and quickly expanding into other systems. From the Old Modern Age, and Vampire the Masquerade system to 'forgotten' favourites like Edge of Empire. With a particularly expertise in Pathfinder/Starfinder 2e and Call of Cthulu. For the last ten years me and a close group of friends have been running our own 'One-Shots' among each other. Taking different systems and adapting stories to fit into them. In this group I've dabbled in everything from 7th Sea to Blade in the Dark. This quickly helped me find my three absolute favourite systems, Blades, Call of Cthulu, and Genesys. Which is what I try to run most of my games in! I'm looking to run games that are player focused and story driven. Though I enjoy many pre-written adventures from Chaosium, Paizo, and other 3rd party mediums I'm a big fan of divergent story telling and letting Players expand the universe they're in.

Character creation

Creating your character

Blades in the Dark Character Creation is very simple and best done at the beginning of the session or shortly before. I will guide you through character creation and supply Sheets through form fillable Google Docs. There we'll quickly put together your character, as well as the crew you and the rest of the players will be a part of. If you're a new player joining the campaign after its already running, we'll do the same when you join. All I need you to come up with is the basic idea of your character. Be ready to answer a few simple questions like if you were born rich or in the gutter, if you know how to fight or are better at talking, If you can track or are a really good accountant etc. Together we'll find the exact right sheet for you to use. Remember, the best analogy for Duskvol is basically a semi-magical Victorian London. There are trains, some electronical innovations, printing presses, and of course ghosts! Your character should fit in that setting. If you want to do some of your own pre-research and look into what you can or could do I'll provide some links below to the resources gnerously offered for free by Evil Hat Productions. There you'll find pretty much everything you'll need; https://bladesinthedark.com/downloads

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Easy! Once you join the game you'll just have to join a Discord server. That's it, it's really is.

What Chris Werner brings to the table

Blades in the Dark by nature is a strong theatre of the mind type of game. For most scenes, I'll provide detailed and overt descriptions just like I would if we were all sitting at a classic table. We'll be using Google Docs for Character Sheets and Discord for our dice rolls. Most of blades is simple theatre of the mind! I'm a players DM at heart, so I lean slightly more into the rule of cool than being a Stickler. Blades, luckily, already blurs that line pretty heavily within the system itself. This is intended to be a very fun and free flowing game between the players and the dungeon master. I do my best to keep up with character voices, but I'm no voice actor! As long as you can tell which NPC is talking, I'm generally happy. I do believe in heavy immersion and roleplay and would love for my players to feel the same. So even if I can't make the voice, I play every character to the best of my ability to help you feel a part of the world.

Safety

How Chris Werner creates a safe table

Player Safety and comfort is extremely important to me. The world of Duskvol is inherently more grim than some other TTRPG's, and with that in mind we'll be using several checks and safety tools to ensure everyone remains comfortable throughout the game. To start off with, Certain Lines and Veils will be in place from the beginning. Some decided by me, and then some decided by you the Players as we begin our first session. This will be a running list kept both in our Discord Server. I'll also be making it clear these can be DM'd to me at any time to ensure everyone is comfortable. Beyond that, I'm a big believer in debriefing and aftercare. I will always check in with folk and take in any feedback necessary. We're here to have fun, and I want to make sure everyone is having it. Keeping in mind that Blades can get intense, and Roleplay can too, we'll also let people call for 10-15min Breaks in sessions so people can have time to relax a bit or maybe make a few more jokes(or even just use the bathroom). Aside from this, though I've not used them before we'll also be implementing X, N, & O cards through digial messages to me. I think this will help curate content, though in truth with other measures in places my hope is that only the O card will ever be used.
