About the adventure
This game will run on Sundays from 8:30 AM- 11:30 AM EST. If Instant Booking, please read the full description to ensure compatibility with your playstyle and expectations. The Devoured Labyrinth is a Shadowdark RPG campaign from Sword Compass Creations. Play starts with a 0-Level funnel adventure and finishes at 10th Level (level cap for Shadowdark). The main campaign takes place in a mysterious valley linked by a network of underground caverns. Overland travel takes place via a traditional hexcrawl mechanic that facilitates movement from one dungeon to the next. Shadowdark is an easy system to learn and is housed in an older-style form of play sometimes referred to OSR (Old School Renaissance). This means character backstories are light with lots of emergent gameplay as the story unfolds. Players are encouraged to problem solve with their minds and be less tied to the mechanics of their character sheet. That's the old-school vibe - fewer rules, very deadly, and lots of player intuitiveness. This campaign is intended for experienced players and newbies as well. The authors of The Devoured Labyrinth span the entire RPG industry, meaning you're getting a top-notch adventure. This is the same campaign I use for my RPG Club at school and I've had nothing but positive results from it.

Meet the Game Master
About me
I'm currently the Director of Operations for the Philadelphia Area Gaming Expo. I've been playing TTRPGs since 1985 and have taught dozens of new players how best to engage in this great hobby. I teach high school as a living, so storytelling, teaching, and proficient verbal communication are my strong suites. I'd love to run a game for you. Let's see where our adventures take us.

Creating your character
The online Shadowdark tool, shadowdarklings.net, will be our tool for character creation. We'll likely stick to the base classes and ancestries found in the core rulebook, although experienced players are welcome to inquire about something contained within the Cursed Scroll zines, etc. as options.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
For the campaign, players should have a Discord account. We'll be using Discord for voice communications and I'll be sharing an invitation to my private server where players will join for sessions. For a VTT (Virtual Tabletop), we'll be using Owlbear Rodeo. It's quick, simple, and easy-to-learn. You do not need a player account. I'll simply share a link for you to join the sessions. Regarding you familiarity with the rules, it's always helpful if you know them beforehand, but Shadowdark is designed to be very quick to pick-up as a player. I would highly recommend downloading the Quick Start Set found at thearcanelibrary.com and looking over it. You'll get the GM Guide as well, but you'll only need the Players Guide. It'll give you the rules and character options, plus it's free!
What Phil Wert brings to the table
As your GM, I'll be bringing nearly four decades of experience. I'm a teacher by trade and was a local elected official for 18 years. I'm very comfortable with the spoken word, it's actually my favorite method of communication. For our sessions, they'll be ambient music to set the mood. I'll be using tabletop.audio and Kenku.FM in Discord to give you a seamless auditory experience to help heighten the mood and enliven the immersion. I can always leave this behind, if it becomes a distraction. It's not a requirement for our sessions and fun. During play, I use the Rules as Written (RAW) when they fit, so I'm always open to the Rule of Cool, if the situation warrants. Shadowdark is a system that encourages the Rule of Cool, so if there's no rule, I'll make a logical ruling to help keep gameplay flowing.

How Phil Wert creates a safe table
My favorite safety tool is the Deck of Player Safety. It is fast, easy, and anonymous. We'll be using the digital version of the deck during Session 0/1 to give everyone an opportunity to provide their input.
