About the adventure
My goal with this game is to provide the base experience of Curse of Strahd everyone has come to know and love and continue the story past the original module. How the game progresses is highly malleable and will depend on what the party decides to do. Become despots and rule the realms of the mists becoming lords of their own domains? Or find a way to destroy the mists completely? I play fast and loose with the rules to speed up play and reward creative thinking. As a former Min/Maxer at heart I have a healthy respect for the love of nice crunchy numbers. But I encourage my players to take sub-optimal options and go for flavor. Is it cool? Try it! This game will deal with dark subject matter and should push your characters to make tough choices and take dark deals. However, one line I draw in my games is I do not allow players to create explicitly "evil" characters. More often than not players that set out to play these characters end up derailing games and playing an adversarial role in the party. This is a collaborative storytelling medium. This is not to say that characters will not embrace their darker selves over the course of the game. But that is something to explore together. I've been running gothic horror games for years and know 5e quite well. It is my favorite genre to play and run. I hope you'll join my game and have fun experiencing all the tropes with a balance of levity and melodrama.

About me
Hi! I'm Ben (a.k.a. EdwinFelspar) By day, I'm a high school teacher specializing in game design electives. By night, I'm a long-time GM with a deep love for storytelling, worldbuilding, and collaborative chaos. After over a decade in the TTRPG space — mostly running D&D 5e — I've decided to bring my games to StartPlaying to challenge myself, meet new players, and help fund the hobby I love. Let’s tell unforgettable stories together.

Creating your character
I encourage players to wait until session zero to finalize any character concepts they have floating around. There will be some pregenerated options for those that want it. I also discourage players from bringing their characters from other games into this one. It is better to create a character specifically for this game based on the table wants and needs. I use point buy for stat generation, fixed HP, milestone XP, and a limited selection of sources. Namely vanilla PHB and the options layed out in Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft. I will entertain other options (I have every book published and shared on D&D Beyond) but would prefer to keep things simple.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
You need D&D Beyond (Free subscription is fine) and access to Discord. A laptop or other device that can view and use the battlemap through D&D Beyond.
What Ben brings to the table
I provide a dedicated Discord server, a wiki with Notes on LegendKeeper, and access to material on D&D Beyond. I use Kenku.fm to provide mood music and atmosphere.
Homebrew rules
I've always used flanking, but we can discuss that at the table.

How Ben creates a safe table
Session 0 conversation to set norms and open communication to resolve disputes. I don't use a formal system like X cards, but feel free to say pause and DM me if something gets uncomfortable. This is horror and will deal with uncomfortable subjects. I will try to handle things delicately and there are a few lines I will not cross that will be gone over in session zero.
