About the adventure
The village of Maal is so small it rarely even features on maps, but since the people there woke up to find a mountain where there used to be a flat plain it has become a focus of widespread curiosity. The Mountain is full of danger and mystery, but bears rewards worth the risk. The campaign will revolve around trips into the Mountain where the rewards will become greater the further inside the party is able to push, as will the chances of getting answers to the big mysteries of the Mountain. These trips will require the party to handle a wide range of obstacles including combat, puzzles, bizarre environments, and more. Resources retrieved from the Mountain can also be used to grow the village of Maal into a useful and unique base of operations using the Bastion rules, though I'm open to customizing the system to meet the needs of the players and the campaign. I am always happy to incorporate PC backstory and story-lines into the adventure, but make sure it is something that will come to you rather than requiring you to find it, since journeys away from Maal and the Mountain will be rare or nonexistent.

About me
I've been running RPGs for longer than I can remember, and have now been doing it professionally for 6 years. Until recently I worked with a company that used games to help develop social skills and support mental health. While that isn't a specific goal of my GMing moving forwards, I maintain a trauma-informed approach prioritizing empathy and tolerance. I welcome anyone who doesn't make others feel unwelcome.

Creating your character
Your character will need to be ready before the first session, but if you need any help or have any questions then feel free to reach out and ask me. Character will be created at level 3 using point buy to determine stats. You can customize your background as much as you want within the limits set in the Players Handbook under "Parts of a Background". All official 2024 (5.5e) and non-updated 2014 (5e) content is allowed with the sole exception of the Potent Dragonmark feat. I am open to reviewing playtest, homebrew, and 3rd party content and allowing it on a case-by-case basis. You are welcome to create the character with pen and paper or on any other platform, but at least by your second session we will need to make a version on Roll20.

You will need an account on Roll20.
What William brings to the table
This will be a unique adventure in a living world. While the campaign starts with a clear direction, where it goes and how it ends are entirely up in the air and will be decided by your choices. Similarly, we will be starting by sticking to the rules as written, and if any of us feels like those rules aren't serving the group then we can discuss changes as a group. The adventure is set in the Forgotten Realms, but the scope is limited to the village of Maal in the Greenfields. If you want to add setting-specific connections to your character, such as to its gods and factions, you can. But even if you know nothing about the setting except that it's generic fantasy, you won't be missing any information vital to the adventure.

How William creates a safe table
Lines and Veils - On Roll20 there is a forum connected to the campaign. As a post there I have laid out the kind of content we won't be touching (lines) and the kind of content that will be left off-screen (veils). You can request publicly or privately for new lines and veils to be added. X and N Cards - At any time during the session you can put an "X" or an "N" into the group chat on Roll20, or whisper it to me. An "X" means that you are uncomfortable with what is currently happening and we need to move past it. An "N" means you suspect we might be heading towards an "X" and we should veer away. Elaboration is optional but can help to clear up exactly what the problem is and ensure we avoid it in the future, and can be included in the message or clarified later. Breaks - Halfway through the session we will take a 10-minute break. Debriefing + Stars and Wishes - After each session I will asks for any questions, comments, or concerns about that session or the campaign. I will then ask each player to highlight a particular moment they appreciated from the session. Finally I will ask if anyone has anything they are hoping for in the next session or later on in the campaign. This debriefing is optional and it's fine if you need to leave early, but I highly recommend participating in it when you can.
