About the adventure

The life of an adventurer offers freedom unlike any other. You choose which jobs to take and which to pass up. Whether motivated by virtue or vice, there's plenty of work for the savvy and daring. Yet, this freedom comes at a price. Risk and reward sway in the balance. Each adventure could be your biggest score yet! Or it could be your last... Welcome, Adventurers! If you're looking for a campaign where you have the flexibility to choose your own adventures and follow your character's dreams, this is the perfect place to start. This campaign is a series of smaller adventures pulled from various anthologies or custom-written for the party. At the end of each adventure, your characters will have a choice of several jobs and/or personal goals to follow next. With this structure, you're never locked into a linear plot and have the flexibility to play a wide variety of adventures, including: - Dungeon crawls - Social and political missions - Daring heists - Exploration-focused adventures - Twisting mysteries - And more For this campaign, I'll use adventures from several different sources, including: - Tales from the Yawning Portal - Ghosts of Saltmarsh - Quests from the Infinite Staircase - Candlekeep Mysteries - Keys from the Golden Vault - And custom-created adventures that allow characters to explore their motivations (by player request) In this campaign, we'll use the 5.5 edition (aka the 5th edition 2024) ruleset, taking time to teach this system whenever needed. The modular nature of this campaign makes it a fantastic way to learn to play or return to the hobby. As a collection of separate and varied adventures, you have the freedom to explore the content that interests you the most. Oh! And you are free to roll either physical or digital dice in my games. I'll never ask you to prove your rolls. We're all adults and deserving of trust.

About me

**NOTE**: If you aren't seeing a campaign or one-shot you'd like to join at a time you're available, message me about a custom adventure. I'm flexible on scheduling and happy to run most modules or home-brew games. I love storytelling! IRL, I'm a professional ghostwriter and a forever DM, running several multi-year campaigns. I've been playing D&D since the 90s and DMing 5e since 2015. So if you are looking for a game where we blend thrilling combat, compelling social encounters, and worldbuilding exploration to create captivating, collaborative stories, this is the table for you!

Character creation

Creating your character

We'll create characters together during Session Zero. If we have players who have never made a character on D&D Beyond before, I'll do a walkthrough of the process. Either way, I'll be present throughout to answer any questions that might arise. As mentioned above, we'll default to the 5.5 edition ruleset. However, 5e content is allowed when there's no 5.5e version. For example, there's a 5.5e version of the Circle of Stars Druid. So we'll use that variant of the subclass. However, there's no 5.5e version of the Circle of Spores. In that case, the 5e subclass is allowed.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

For this campaign, you'll need the following: - Discord account - D&D Beyond account - A microphone or headset suitable for use on Discord (your phone can work for this if you have a quiet area to play) - A computer, laptop, tablet, or a combination of these capable of running both Discord and D&D Beyond simultaneously. We'll use Disord to talk during the sessions. Once you secure your spot in the game, you'll receive the link to join my server. We'll use D&D Beyond Maps for our VTT. I understand that this is a new platform for many people. However, it's straightforward to use and runs easily on most computers. There's nothing to download, and I'll do an orientation during Session Zero. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions as you prepare for the session.

What RJ Currer brings to the table

- Access to all my D&D Beyond Content (42 sourcebooks) during character creation and leveling up - D&D Beyond Maps as the VTT - Discord channel for gameplay - A fun, dynamic, adaptive DM-style - Direct access to me for questions and brainstorming - Collaborative atmosphere - Intense in-game challenges - A strong, evocative narrative style that blends gritty drama with tension-relieving comedic beats - Thematic background music - Over 30 years of experience with D&D - Over a decade of combined experience DMing with D&D 5e 5.5e - Character voices (I mean, I'm no voice actor, but I do my best.)

Homebrew rules

While I'm primarily a rules-as-written DM, there is still room for Rule of Cool in my game. Feel free to get creative, and I'll roll with it unless there's a good reason not to. I still use the optional flanking rule, where creatures get advantage on attacks if an ally is on the opposite side of the target. Both the creature and the ally must be in melee combat with the target. This applies to most monsters/NPCs. However, some creatures (like those with blindsight) are not subject to this rule.

Safety

How RJ Currer creates a safe table

Our first session will start with a Session Zero, during which I orient everyone to my style of gameplay, build characters, and go over the safety tools used. If Session Zero doesn't take up the whole time (and it probably won't), we'll jump into Session 1 and start the adventure. I use the Lines and Veils system as my primary safety tool. For those unfamiliar, it's essentially a collaborative list of hard and soft limits. During Session Zero, I'll share my standard Lines and Veils. Additionally, everyone will have the opportunity to add to the list. Player safety is critical in my campaigns. Characters will often be in danger, but players should always feel safe. To that end, I take Lines and Veils very seriously. Any player can add a new line or veil at any point during the campaign, even mid-session. I'm committed to making any necessary adjustments to respect every player's limits. The list of content warnings for this campaign is extensive only because of the many adventure options available to the group. None of these are mandatory to any adventure, and I'm happy to tweak adventures to match our Lines and Veils. Additionally, I can present a list of content warnings for each adventure option when presented.
