About the adventure

High atop Wisp Mountain stands the town of Holt’s Peak, a settlement that has endured for many years. It serves as a welcoming base for miners and trappers, as well as a vital stopover for travelers crossing the high mountain passes. About a month ago, all communication with the town abruptly ceased. Since then, Holt’s Peak appears to be sealed away, shrouded in a perpetual bank of cloud. No one who has ventured into the mist has returned. A handful of survivors - claiming to have escaped from the town - tell of an attack by Wisps: strange, elusive, glowing orbs of light sometimes seen drifting across the high moors, the very phenomenon that gave Wisp Mountain its name. Some believe the Wisps lure travelers from safe paths into treacherous bogs. Others insist the lights have guided them to safety when they were lost. The adventure begins with you awakening on a dark, wet, mist-choked cobbled street near the main gates of Holt’s Peak. You cannot clearly remember how you arrived. You recall only being somewhere on the mountain when the fog suddenly closed in. Then came the lights - pulsing and spinning in the mist around you, a dizzying display that overwhelmed your senses. Your mind buckled under the strain, and you fell into darkness.

About me

I've been playing and GMing for over 30 years now, with my first introduction to roleplaying being my mum GMing for my brother, dad and I during the summer holidays. We had been given the Basic D&D Red and Blue boxed sets for Xmas and hadn't gotten around to reading them yet, but the funny Cockney voice mum did for a captured Kobold we were interrogating it sealed the deal! "Aw 'Govnor, please don't 'urt me. Oi'll tell you everyfink!" I went on to GM for a group of friends during lunch times at High School, then played and GM'd at Glasgow University Gaming Society (GUGS) in the late '90's, helped to form Hursley Gaming Society (HuGS) at IBM in the early 2000's, and so on. I generally do D&D or fantasy of some sort, and have played or GM'd a wide variety of rules systems and genres including WHFRP, Call of Chthulu, Changeling, Alien, d20 Modern, Star Wars (d6 and d20 rules), Blades in the Dark, GURPS, TORG, BESM, Golden Heroes, and many more.

Character creation

Creating your character

dndbeyond.com characters. 2024 rules. Points Buy or Standard Array for stats. Classes and races from Players Handbook, Xanthars and Tasha's are available - anything else by agreement with the GM if you have it. Starting at level 2. Each player will start with standard starting items/money for their class + 50gp, 2 potions and 1 magic item that is a basic +1 or similar level utility item (subject to GM approval). For each character I would like to have a bit of background on who you are and what you are like: 2 positive characteristics (bold, funny, smart) 1 negative characteristic (short temper, boring, timid) A primary motivator (What drives you? Thrill seeking, money, power, revenge?) Additionally, have an idea about how you ended up on Wisp Mountain. - Perhaps a neighboring town sent you to uncover what happened to Holt’s Peak. - Perhaps someone you care about was trapped there when it was cut off. - Or perhaps you were merely passing through, lost in the clouds, and somehow found your way here.

What Martin / Moo brings to the table

This scenario (I hesitate to call it a campaign - should only be be 4-8 sessions) is set in a dark, damp, mist-ridden Gothic town. It is intended to be a bit eerie and spooky, but not 'horror'. There will be a large chunk of investigation and working out what's going on and of course several combats, but I wouldn't describe this as a dungeon crawl. I try to follow the D&D rules, as I find it provides a nice structure and balance for players to know what to expect and what is possible, however it's not strictly enforced if the situation calls for it.

Homebrew rules

Open to suggestions from the players as to what we adopt as a group. If you've got some non-standard guidelines or rules you'd like us all to follow, please do suggest it and we can see what everyone thinks. Be aware if players get to do it, so to the monsters!

Safety

How Martin / Moo creates a safe table

In Session 0 we can have a table discussion on any themes that players may be uncomfortable with so that I can make sure they don't happen in the game. After each session I will try to ask players if there was anything specific they liked, disliked or felt uncomfortable with during the session, so we can get more of the good things and less of the bad going forward. This game is not intended to include content that would generally be considered offensive or triggering. However, everyone’s comfort levels are different, and your enjoyment and safety are my top priorities. If at any point something makes you uncomfortable, I strongly encourage you to message me privately or speak up. While it’s my responsibility to ensure everyone is having a good time, it’s also important that you let me know if something isn’t working for you.
