About the adventure

Are you ready to start your week a new way? This learn-to-play bootcamp runs from Monday to Wednesday, for two hours a day. In just three days, you and your beginner adventuring party will go from zeroes to heroes (of the Borderlands!) This course is ideal for people who learn best by putting new skills into practice right away, in short bursts. You’ve always pushed your luck in the Citadel, but this time, you’ve gone too far, and your privileged background won’t save you anymore. Rather than a death sentence, you’ve been shipped off to the Borderlands bootcamp. Mysteries await you in this untamed land. Where do you want to go? As you and your party adventure, you will face challenges, explore the wild, make friends (or maybe enemies?), and trade stories in Greyhawk's busy Keep on the Borderlands. Discover a rugged fantasy world and help to shape its fate, uncovering lost secrets and forging your own legend at the edge of civilization. During this (very) mini campaign, you will learn to play the most recent edition of Dungeons and Dragons (5.5e / 5e 2024) from absolute scratch. There is absolutely zero knowledge required of the game, and the core mechanics will be taught through play, repetition and discussion. This is the perfect learn to play for you if you: - Learn by doing, rather than reading. - Struggle to maintain new skills without practice. - Prefer a "hand-hold" learning approach rather than self study. - Have never played any TTRPG before. - Have played but have always been a bit fuzzy on the mechanics. - Want to join a high-level existing group but don't want to be the only beginner. - Want a social new hobby that doesn't need you to leave the house. We'll be playing little and often to help you get your practice in and commit all that new learning to long-term memory.

About me

In school, my best friend and I used to roleplay our favourite characters by passing notes back and forth in study hall. Twenty years later, I’m still pretending to be other people for fun - but with a lot more structure and sophistication, I hope! I’m a gay mother of two from Ireland who really enjoys the extensive, co-operative worldbuilding and deep character development that TTRPG can facilitate. I am always my players biggest fan and love to be surprised by them. I have about a year of experience as a DM, primarily in 5e/2024.

Character creation

Creating your character

Before session 1, you will be sent a very short primer on race and class types, as well as a character sheet template on D&D Beyond. Think about your character's appearance, personality and history as much as you like before you introduce them (and yourself!) to us.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players should create a free account on D&D Beyond, as this is the platform we'll use for character sheets and maps. We will use Discord for voice and video. While I will share my video, you don't have to (though it is encouraged.) You should have a strong connection and a decent quality microphone - if we can't hear you, we can't play! I will send you a character template on D&D Beyond (as above) as well as a consent checklist (as below)

What Kitty brings to the table

As a teaching DM, I will introduce you to the world of D&D through introduction to the tools we use as players to build a world together. I will gently remind you of every step until you have it down. To make this the most fun experience, you can expect it to be roleplay heavy. I will play NPCs (the characters you will meet in the game) with big and memorable personalities, and you are encouraged to talk to them and each other in character as much as you feel comfortable. Now and again, I will ask you to make up and describe details of the world around you that we can integrate into the game, as a way to help you get used to collaborating at the table. I will use background music and noise (via KenkuFM) to set the scene, as well as limited visuals on Beyond. I encourage you to find the limits of the system - don't be held back by the actions on the sheet in front of you. Wherever the game allows it, I'll help you find a way to achieve whatever you want to do, as long as it doesn't affect the experiences of other players.

Homebrew rules

None. We will be playing by-the-book so that you can take your newfound skills forward with confidence into the next adventure you choose, whatever that might be.

Safety

How Kitty creates a safe table

We will be using the Monte Cook RPG consent checklist prior to session 1. While this beginner campaign is tame on paper, player collaboration may take it a different way. Because of this, it's important we are all on the same page. We will create a blacklist of topics and situations before the campaign begins. Where any of those topics appear in the game, I will steer away. Players can anonymously call a 5 minute break at any time, no reason required, during a session. During those 5 minutes, I will stay present and contactable in case players need a private chat to discuss their feelings and comfort levels.
