About the adventure

Somewhere beyond death is where this story begins. In a dark and distant place, where frightening powers best left forgotten await just beneath the veil of night. A ghastly fog rolls across the rails, and it comes to you witth the scream of a train whistle like a choir of wailing souls. Then the old black locomotive emerges from the dark: the Ghostlight Express, a spectral engine bound for the afterlife. When its doors open, you are already holding a ticket. Did fate bring you here? Did you die, and are aboard to an afterlife? The thread of fate pulling you doesn't matter; you are bound as a passanger regardless. Your journey ends in Druskenvald, a land of endless night where the mist never lifts and the moon smiles with a crooked grin. Stranded in the haunted valley of Wickermoor Hollow, you will walk through isolated villages gripped by fear, dark forests where monsters lurk just beyond the trees, and perilous crossroads where the sharpest blades and mightiest spells cannot save you. Here, strange folk cling to ancient superstitions, bonfires burn in the harvest dark, and every whisper in the woods might belong to something older than memory. From the moment you arrive, your fate becomes entangled with Phillip Druskenvald, lord of this cursed domain, and his clairvoyant wife Adelaβ€”two well-meaning nobles caught in a web of evil far older and far crueler than they understand. They need saving. So do their people. The question is whether you can pay the price. Meanwhile, in a crooked house lives a Crooked Man with a crooked grin, beneath the boughs of a Crooked Tree, listening to the murmurs of the Eldritch Horrors beyond the Crystal Wall. A horn-crowned beast stalks the deepest woods and the deepest hearts. Restless dead, ravenous horrors, wicked hags, hidden cults, fallen heroes, and primeval powers all move in the shadows, governed by an unfathomable will. Now, you are about to weave your own dreadful tale that will terrify and delight your friends. Come, under the watchful eyes of the Crooked Moon, and let your story unfold. β€” Crooked Moon is a dark fantasy folk horror campaign for 18+ players who want their D&D to feel dangerous, atmospheric, and emotionally immersive. It is built for all experience levels: easy to step into for brand-new players, yet rich with meaningful choices, challenging encounters, and deep roleplay for veterans who want every decision to matter. Whether you have never rolled a die in your life or have spent decades at the table, this valley has room for you. Expect a story where every decision carries weight, where the rules of the world reward clever, courageous, and careful play, and where the tale you tell together with your fellow players will be as dark and strange and yours as any folktale passed down by firelight. Climb aboard, brave the witching hour, and weave your own dreadful folktale beneath the Crooked Moon!

About me

Hey. I'm Sol, a 22yo autistic brazilian dude with a hyperfixation on Dungeons&Dragons. One day, someone at my table said: "If you have so many problems with D&D as a system, why don't you try to do a better job than they did?" I took that to heart. I am a lifelong actor and storyteller, and an 8-year-experienced dungeon master for Dungeons&Dragons, the great majority of which I have performed through online play. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Theatre, with my Bachelor's thesis being about D&D (and TTRPGs in general) as a dramaturgical tool. Hope to see you at my tables!

Character creation

Creating your character

There will be a custom PDF file for Character Sheet Creation, which provides high editability, making it a perfect vehicle for character creation even with the numerous changes to the system I usually employ in my games. The following are the general rules regarding character creation, including general guidelines and variant rules: 🎲π—₯π—’π—Ÿπ—Ÿ 𝗙𝗒π—₯ 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗧𝗦! All will roll 4d6 and keep the highest 3 rolls to determine each of the Ability Scores for their characters. Each player gets to roll two sets of results, re-rolling all results below 8 and re-rolling the whole set if no results are above 14, and taking the preffered of the two sets. βœ¨π— π—œπ—Ÿπ—˜π—¦π—§π—’π—‘π—˜ π—Ÿπ—˜π—©π—˜π—Ÿπ—œπ—‘π—š. Experience (XP) is not a used mechanic. All characters level up at the same time when reaching certain milestones in the story. This is also known as Milestone Leveling, and prevents any single player character from getting stronger than any other. πŸ’°π— π—”π—šπ—œπ—– π—œπ—§π—˜π— π—¦. You get 3 options for Magic Items your character can start with: A) One Uncommon magic item of your choice, excluding the following: Bag of Holding, Broom of Flying, Decanter of Endless Water, Immovable Rod. B) Up to 3 Consumable Points which you can spend to have Consumable Magic Items, like spell scrolls, potions and the like. Commons cost 1, Uncommons cost 2, and Rares cost 3. Nothing above Rare allowed. C) One Rare magic item which I get to choose for your character, and which will be cursed. The curse will be tailored to your character.

What Sol brings to the table

My games are run almost entirely over Discord, with bots in place to take care of dice rolls and ambient music. Owlbear Rodeo is my VTT of choice, since it is much more streamlined for beginners in relation to other options such as Roll20. I am a very skilled and experienced roleplayer with a background in theater and creative writing, so I will do my best to create a fertile environment for the emergence of powerful roleplay moments and satisfying narratives. If you wish to learn more about my GMing style, check out my profile. I run a homebrewed version of D&D 5.5e, containing a lot of rules taken from various different third party sources and independent homebrew writers (me included), each personally and rigorously translated, balanced, modified, playtested, and documented. Here is what I can promise in my version of the system: - 17 Reimagined Classes, each offering entirely distinct character fantasies and avenues of mechanical depth; - 67 options for Species (not including subspecies, lineages or ancestries) to allow for all sorts of characters to make themselves into heroes and work through the conflicts that arise due to the circumstances of their bloodline; - A list of pre-set Backgrounds and all the tools to create your own, along with an expanded Feat list, building and expanding upon the options found in the new Player's Handbook; - 1100+ Spells, unlocking the true potential of spellcasters by giving them an arsenal of a scale hitherto unseen; - A reimagined version of the Weapon Mastery system inspired by Ryoko’s Guide to The Yokai Realms, allowing for a broadening of the versatility and complexity of playing a Martial class, and putting them truly on par with the versatility of classes like the Wizard. - A swathe of general rules tweaks that add mechanical cohesion to the game (especially at higher levels). All of this will be available in a series of channels in my Discord Server. I also have, available for all players, sourcebooks that highlight the rules of the game in their entirety.

If an effect or ability requires you to use a Bonus Action to use it, you can use it as an Action instead if you wish. You cannot use the same Bonus Action effect more than once per turn. βš—οΈπ——π—₯π—œπ—‘π—žπ—œπ—‘π—š π—£π—’π—§π—œπ—’π—‘π—¦. Potions can be taken as a Bonus Action. If you do so with a Healing Potion, you roll the dice, but if you take the potion with your Action, you regain Hit Points as if every die had rolled its maximum possible result. You can also throw a potion at a creature. Likewise, other items that are stored on vials and weigh less than 2 pounds, like Oil, Alchemist's Fire, or Acid, can be thrown as a Bonus Action in this same way. πŸ’ͺπ—˜π—‘π—–π—¨π— π—•π—₯π—”π—‘π—–π—˜. If you carry too much weight for your Strength score to handle, you will gain progressive debuffs. πŸ›‘οΈπ—˜π—‘π—›π—”π—‘π—–π—˜π—— π——π—˜π—™π—˜π—‘π—¦π—˜π—¦. You gain a bonus to your Armor Class and all your Saving Throws equal to half your Proficiency Bonus, rounded down. This rule exists to avoid negative Saving Throw modifiers at low levels. β€ΌοΈπ—˜π—«π—›π—”π—¨π—¦π—§π—œπ—©π—˜ π——π—˜π—”π—§π—›π—¦. If a creature at 0 HP that is not Stable gets healed, it must make a CON Save with a DC of 10 + their Proficiency Bonus + 2 each time they succeed on the save, or they gain 1 lv of Exhaustion. πŸ”ͺπŸ”¨π—›π—”π—₯π—©π—˜π—¦π—§π—œπ—‘π—š 𝗔𝗑𝗗 𝗖π—₯π—”π—™π—§π—œπ—‘π—š. There are special rules in my games that encourage harvesting crafting components from felled monsters, and using them to craft magic items. These rules can be found in the book Heliana’s Guide to Monster Hunting, and are also written in their entirety in my Discord Server. πŸ“–π—œπ—‘π—§π—˜π—Ÿπ—Ÿπ—œπ—šπ—˜π—‘π—–π—˜ 𝗣π—₯π—’π—™π—œπ—–π—œπ—˜π—‘π—–π—œπ—˜π—¦. You gain a number of bonus Tool or Language Proficiencies of your choice equal to your Intelligence Modifier. If you have a negative Intelligence modifier, you must choose one of these proficiencies that you gain from other features to have it removed. πŸ‘π— π—”π——π—‘π—˜π—¦π—¦. If your character undergoes a traumatic experience, or a situation of extreme mental stress, you will be asked to roll a DC 15 INT, WIS, or CHA Save (your choice). If you fail, your character gains a form of Madness. You can revert a failure by interacting with other player characters and working through your traumas with them during rests. πŸ’₯π— π—”π—¦π—¦π—œπ—©π—˜ π——π—”π— π—”π—šπ—˜ 𝗔𝗑𝗗 π—Ÿπ—œπ—‘π—šπ—˜π—₯π—œπ—‘π—š π—œπ—‘π—π—¨π—₯π—œπ—˜π—¦. If you take damage equal to or greater than half your MAX HP from a single effect, you’re conscious, and have at least 1 HP after the damage, you must make a DC 15 CON Save, or suffer a random pain shock effect. If you are unconscious when you take the damage, or if the damage reduces you to 0 HP, you must make a DC 18 CON Save, or suffer a Lingering Injury depending on the type of the damage you took. πŸ’€π—¦π—˜π—–π—₯π—˜π—§ π——π—˜π—”π—§π—› π—¦π—”π—©π—˜π—¦. Death Saves are rolled in secret by the DM, instead of by the player. The result is communicated to the player through DMs, but they cannot divulge the result of the save to other player

How Sol creates a safe table

NOTE ON CONTENT WARNINGS The list of trigger/content warnings below is a list of things that will, almost certainly, appear in the game. Other than the things outlined and mentioned below, additional triggering contents may come up during play. To make sure no one is put off by a topic they find sensitive, I always address, before character creation, any possible limits and boundaries, in the form of Lines and Veils, for each player, until we have made a comprehensive list of all things we should avoid in play. More rules regarding safety measures are detailed in the Discord Server in which the game will take place.
