About the adventure

This game is designed specifically for new players, but more experienced players are welcome too. Expect a balanced mix of roleplay, exploration, and combat, with plenty of opportunities to be creative, take risks, and have fun. If you've always wanted to play Mission Impossible with elves and magic, this is the game for you. Or if you've want to try out one of the sneakier, skill monkey or non-offensive caster classes without playing second fiddle to the warriors, this is the game for you. This is the Keys of the Golden Vault, perfect for learning the ropes. These adventures encourage careful planning, scouting, stealth and sleuthing, so put your sword and board away, pull out that disguise kit and get ready to flirt with a wealthy patron or blackmail a bodyguard. I'll guide you through the process of making the characters into a balanced party and teach you the rules through play, and you can watch your novice adventurer become a true hero. We’ll play in short weekly sessions and by the end, you’ll not only understand how to play—you’ll have a character and story you can carry forward into future campaigns if you choose to continue.

About me

Hi! I'm Chris from the UK. I am an educator who loves TTRPGs and see them as a good way to develop all sorts of skills in young (and not so young) people. Problem solving, understanding probabilities, developing empathy, learning to improvise, overcoming social anxiety and all sorts of other abilities come into play in every game - and you get to learn and develop them while having fun and telling great stories together. I started off back in the day (early 90s) with games like Paranoia, Call of Cthulhu and Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, but since my kids have been old enough, Dungeons and Dragons has become my main jam. I've G and DMed many sessions both online and around a table and my main obsession is that every character has their own story to tell as well as the plot of whatever game we're playing, whether it's a one shot or an extended campaign. I love playing published material with all the shiny resources available (I use Roll20, DNDBeyond and Syrinscape a lot) but I'm also very happy homebrewing, worldbuilding and running original scenarios and campaigns.

Character creation

Creating your character

Party synergy is really important for this campaign, so we will make characters together, either during the first session or on my discord server beforehand if time allows. Characters start at level 1 and I am will activate content sharing on DNDBeyond so that no purchases are neccessary for most standard builds.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need accounts on Discord (for voice/video and admin etc between sessions), Roll20 (VTT) and DNDBeyond (character sheets). You will also need the Beyond20 browser extension to let your DNDBeyond sheet talk to Roll20. I'm very happy to help with any of these things you are not familiar with.

What Chris brings to the table

This campaign is intended to be combat-lite (unless things go wrong!) so you can expect a good mix of roleplay and strategy/execution. I love characterising NPCs in a memorable way. There will be accents! I like to have a laugh while playing, but stop well short of silliness or farce. I use Syrinscape for ambient music, sound effects and battle music, but you can turn this off in discord if it isn't your jam. I like every character to have their own backstory arc, which we'll weave in to the ongoing story. I'm not afraid to go off-script if we need to for this. I mostly stick to the rules, but sometimes situations arise where they don't quite work or make sense. I use rule of cool or make my own judgement when this happens.

Homebrew rules

None as standard, but I'm certainly willing to entertain any ideas you may have.

Safety

How Chris creates a safe table

Before the first session I ask each player to fill in a Monte Cook consent checklist. We will talk about triggers and how the Open Door system works during the first session. If anyone gets triggered or emotional during a session, I check in with them after the session via discord. There is nothing too intense trigger-wise in this campaign, but there are some creepy dolls and monsters here and there. One mission is a prison break which may be a problem for some. There are also missions involving fiends/devils.
