About the adventure
The Monitoga Sails Again The salt-stained walls of the Drunken Kraken tavern in Port Blackreef shook with raucous laughter and the clatter of tankards. Smoke from cheap pipeweed hung thick in the air, mixing with the stench of spilled rum, sweat, and the sea. It was just another night in the lawless port—until the door burst open and a grizzled old sailor staggered in, his face pale as a ghost and his clothes soaked with seawater. “She’s back!” he bellowed, eyes wide with terror. “The Monitoga sails again!” The tavern fell silent. Even the most hardened pirates stopped mid-swig. Everyone knew the tale. Twenty years ago, the Monitoga was the terror of the Azure Sea. Captain Iron-Jaw Varkis, a massive half-ogre with a jaw reinforced by enchanted iron plates, commanded a crew of cutthroats, sorcerers, and sea devils. They plundered merchant fleets, sank naval warships, and amassed a fortune in gold, jewels, ancient relics, and cursed artifacts stolen from forgotten temples. Then, during a cataclysmic storm off the Crimson Reef, the ship vanished without a trace. Most said she went down with all hands. A few whispered she had been claimed by something far darker. Now, the old sailor continued, voice trembling: “Three nights ago, the merchant ship Golden Gull was found drifting, her crew slaughtered or missing. Her hold was empty, and on the deck were bloody footprints that ended at the rail… leading straight into the waves. Last night, the Stoutheart—a heavily armed escort galley—went silent. This morning, fishermen saw her: a rotting galleon with tattered black sails that move against the wind, green ghostly fire flickering from her portholes, and the faint sound of damned souls chanting shanties. Captain Varkis stands at the helm once more… or whatever unholy thing wears his bones now.” He slammed a crumpled, bloodstained wanted poster onto the nearest table. It showed a menacing image of the Monitoga—a three-masted galleon with barnacle-encrusted hull, glowing crimson runes along the gunwales, and skeletal figures manning the rigging. Scrawled beneath in bold letters: THE MONITOGA SAILS AGAIN 500 gold pieces for the head of Captain Iron-Jaw Varkis A king’s ransom awaits any soul bold enough to board her and claim the treasure hold
