About the adventure

Among Bregan D'aerthe's mercenaries few are more revered and perhaps even feared than Jarlaxle's gunslingers. Carefully selected crossbow experts who have been granted use of the unusual smokepowder devices created in part Jarlaxle's alliance with the isle of Latan. Within the City of Waterdeep, three gunslingers have been stationed to aid in Bregan D'aerthe's cause ever silent and never seen. It is the dream of many in the drow mercenary company to be called up to join the ranks of gunslinger, and you are the lucky enough to apprentice to do just that. In this city of splendors there are shining beacons of goodness and there is devastating shadows of evil. Yet, much like the great gift of darkvision your work plays within the shades of grey where light and shadow intermingle. Will you be a dancing light in the dark reaches of the city? Or are you destined to be the shadow that lurks beneath the broken Dock Ward streetlamp? This adventure draws inspiration from the Waterdeep: Dragon Heist Storyline, as well as the works of R.A Salvatore, and a little bit from the Three Musketeers. This is a Solo campaign, which means the party consists of one player character and one DM. Bring your love of world building, storytelling, and character exploration to the table. As the only player you will directly shape the adventure as it unfolds inspiring events and NPCs you meet along the way. Your character will be starting their apprenticeship as a level 1 character and as the story advances move to level 20 using milestone progression this campaign will represent the entirety of the individual’s career. The pace of progression will depend on the story and how fast you wish to level up. Having some background knowledge on the Waterdeep: Dragon Heist story line, and Bregan D'aerthe as an organization will be helpful for this campaign. While the source material is inspiration, the world in which we play will be adapted to fit the needs and interest of both player and DM. Feel free to build or alter this sandbox as needed.

About me

Hello I’m Michelle C I’m a Game Master from Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. I started DMing Dungeons and Dragons back in 2018. As I live on a rock in the north Atlantic, I’ve done most of my games online. I’ve had the pleasure of running games at virtual conventions and community events and that led to me being here with all you lovely folks. I run mostly D&D 5e, and I'm a big Forgotten Realms dork. Waterdeep: Dragon Heist is my favourite hardcover adventure. It is my cozy comfort campaign and every so often I run a re-telling of that adventure. I also think the Underdark is so neat, I love spiders and have pet tarantulas. Any day I get to create stories about cozy caves and geek out about spiders is a great day. Thank you for stopping by, feel free to reach out if you have any questions about ongoing campaigns or want to chat about how Luskan really does belong in the Lords’ Alliance.

Character creation

Creating your character

You are welcome to come to session 0 with a character in mind, or we can build the character together in session 0. The character will start at level 1 using D&D 2024 rule set. You are welcome to use any published source in character creation. If you wish to use homebrew content, do let me know so I can read up on it. You’re welcome to roll character stats, use point buy or standard array. Select starting gear from character background, additional items will be granted in session 0. Your character starts as an apprentice in Bregan D’aerthe a mercenary company that originates in Menzoberranzan and has holdings throughout the Underdark and notably in the city of Luskan on the Sword Coast. How your character came to join this ground, and their species, class and background are entirely up to you.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Please have access to Discord, and Roll 20 before the start of the campaign. I will have a D&D beyond campaign if you prefer to build a character there. This campaign uses voice, with option of video if preferred.

What Michelle C brings to the table

I’m a huge Waterdeep and Bregan D’aerthe dork so I shall be bringing heaps of joyful chaos to the table. I tend to run rule of cool, using the rules narratively rather than a stopping point. My session plans are an outline rather than a firm railroad, so there is lots of room to improvise and go in new directions.

Homebrew rules

“I Know a Guy” This allows players to shape helpful ( or unhelpful NPCs) At any point in the game your character states that they “know someone” you give me a few lines about this person and a new NPC is born. Death is not finite If your character fails 3 death saves, they’re not instantly dead end of story. Instead, we play out what comes next for them, what afterlife may or may not await them. The character has the opportunity to plead their case if they wish to return to life at great cost, or explore what options await if returning is not what they desire.

Safety

How Michelle C creates a safe table

Games are meant to be fun and relaxing and if that’s not happening let’s chat about it. Open communication is key, regular check ins at the start and end of every session. In session 0 we’ll go over the content of the game, expectations, lines and veils, rules, and play a prologue to the game. There will be a red x card, yellow pause card, and green go card in the Roll 20 room. If there is another safety tool you prefer, please let me know.
