About the adventure
This is a cinematic D&D mystery campaign set in Waterdeep, structured like a prestige television series. Each session plays as a self-contained case—murders, larcenies, disappearances—while every season builds toward a larger, slow-burning mystery that reshapes the city. Think sweeping establishing shots of the streets and wards, tense interrogations by lamplight, and revelations that land like end-of-episode cliffhangers. Roleplay drives the story. Roughly 85% of the play is devoted to investigation, character interaction, and emotional beats, with combat used sparingly and purposefully. A custom Sleuthing stat levels the playing field, letting any character interpret clues regardless of class, race, or build. Insight, creativity, and collaboration matter more than raw numbers, encouraging smart play and sharp characterization. The tone blends mystery, drama, comedy, and romance—equal parts Law & Order, Castle, and Forgotten Realms intrigue. Characters build relationships with informants, suspects, rivals, and each other, turning Waterdeep into a living city that remembers what you’ve done and reacts to who you are. This campaign is designed for players who want to feel like protagonists in a TV drama, not pieces on a battle map. Each episode is tightly paced, each season is intentional, and every clue, confession, and consequence pushes the story forward toward something bigger than any single case.

Meet the Game Master
About me
I'm a storyteller with over two decades in Hollywood producing and distributing films and TV. I've written comic books and comic books. I'm currently running for elected office. I've been in two long-term gaming groups since the pandemic, and was in a long-term group in my school days.

Creating your character
Characters should be created before the session. Use the 4d6 (drop the lowest roll) method. Characters are starting their career, so they begin at 1st level. We'll be using D&D Beyond for the character creation.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
Games will be played on Roll20, with Discord for communication. Invites will be sent out prior to the game. As soon as you can, let me know your character's name, class, and race. Super helpful if you can get me an image of how you envision your character. Also, I'll need 2-3 NPCs and how you're connected to them. Lastly, why would your character join a private detective agency?
What Zachary Hunchar brings to the table
I'll gloss over wanting everyone to have fun while being challenged--if you're not having fun, then I'm failing. I want an inclusive group, so if you wouldn't say something to Dwayne Johnson's face, then don't say it to fellow players. I'm way more interested in storytelling than I am in being a stickler for rules. That being said, I generally follow the rules for fairness. And any superseding rules are fairly agreed upon and always adhered to. I like punctuality. Do your best to be on time. I'm always looking at Discord, so keep me posted. Try updating your computer, browser, and Discord before the game. You'll need a microphone, but cameras are less important. That's up to your sense of safety. My camera will be on, unless I'm having some system problems. If you're eating, turn your camera off and mute yourself when you're not talking.
Homebrew rules
I'll play fast and loose with the rules to move the story along. That being said, I've got a new skill I call Sleuthing. Everyone gets it, and it starts at 0. Each even-level increase is +1. This reflects your growth as an investigator. Nothing else increases this (stats, skills, racial or glass benefits, magic, etc.) Sleuthing is your character's way of interpreting/remembering data and clues along the way. I'll call for rolls when I think it is appropriate. At the start of the game, the party possesses (1) Brownie Point. A Brownie Point is a boon that will help you if you're really stuck. If you don't use it during the session, you gain another, and they accumulate. However, you can only use one per mystery. If you use one, you don't get a new one at the end of the current mystery. The Silverbridge Detective Agency is just starting, and it is focused on solving crimes and upholding the law. Sometimes, there are moments where breaking the law might get you to the conclusion sooner. If you are caught by actual enforcement, your character will be fired. If a player experiences three firings (that aren't pre-planned), they will be booted. Don't make it harder for the other players.

How Zachary Hunchar creates a safe table
I'm available for out-of-game communication, not just in-game. Don't hesitate to let me know if anything upsets or concerns you. During the game, I've got X, N, and O Cards enabled.
