About the adventure

Stretches of wilderness mostly untouched by “civilized” races—particularly forests, swamps, mountains, and rolling plains—are the most likely to touch the Realm of the Fey, often opening a temporary or permanent portal between the Material Plane and the Fey Plane. Such occurrences are especially common in the Aeredale region. Over the years, fey creatures—sprites, gnomes, pixies, satyrs, hags, and others—have filtered from the Fey Plane into the countryside surrounding Aeredale, particularly in Pelview Grove to the north and Pelfell Bog to the east. Most of these fey, while mischievous, have been largely good hearted…until recently… If you've never wandered into the Fey Realm before, now is the time! This campaign begins with your lowly first-level PCs exploring mysteries in and around the town of Aeredale and leveling up while determining the cause of the recent incursions of the fey into the surrounding areas. You will have the opportunity to: Roleplay with NPCs and your fellow adventurers Interact with mysterious new creatures Engage in exciting combat when words don't succeed Gather and arrange clues to figure out who is behind the strange happenings Explore fabulous new realms As a DM known for storytelling, I will do my best to bring you into this campaign and make the world come to life. This campaign is currently run-as-written by the DM Lair with the only modification being a lot of additional maps, because as a visual player (and DM) I love maps. Theater of the mind is fine, when necessary, but whenever I can, I'll present you a map! I am not a rules lawyer and will bend them to the breaking point if a player wants to do something cool. My campaigns are more lighthearted and fun than gritty and realistic, so if you just want to chill and have a great time once a week, be welcome!

About me

I got into D&D back in the olden days when the game was young and after all this time I'm still not bored with it! Playing is fun but I find DMing more rewarding as I love to create new places, scenarios, and characters, and to cook up original plots and adventures. I love to make maps and guide players through them, but I also appreciate theater of the mind when maps can be too limiting. I love teaching new people to play, so feel free to message me if you are too intimidated to join a group. Solo games are always an option!

Character creation

Creating your character

You can bring me your idea for your character when you sign up and we'll discuss whether it's a good fit for the campaign, or we can create a character together during a free out-of-game session zero (at your convenience prior to your first game session). We will go over the rules and regulations at that time. I use mainly 2024 rules, but I sometimes pull in things from 2014 and homebrew if the group feels they are more appropriate or fun. I don't need a ten page backstory for your character but we will focus on short-term and long-term personal goals to help bring your character into the story. I will absolutely help you brainstorm ideas for this if you need assistance. You don't need to know anything about D&D to join. The basic rules are pretty simple and the VTT is easy to learn.

The current party

Currently we have a human cleric and an elf druid! Hit that JOIN CAMPAIGN button and let's get started! :) This campaign isn't roleplay heavy or roleplay light, it's roleplay just right! Same with combat; not too much, not too little. I like balance.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need a free Discord account for the voice chat and game information, and you will need a free account on The Forge (my host for Foundry VTT). You can create your character on D&D Beyond and it will integrate with the game, or you can build one directly in Foundry. You will need a working microphone, but a camera is not needed. I find video distracting and unwieldy, as well as being a resource hog, so I don't use one. I have had players who like to play on camera, so if that's your preference and you are welcome to use one; I've found the other players will typically join the brave camera-using soul, but you will never be required to be on vid. I do not record my sessions because "ain't no one got time for that". I will send you links to Discord and the campaign when you join.

What dysonrules brings to the table

My players have given me kudos for my storytelling and creativity, so I hope to bring that to you every session. I love to drag your PCs into the plotline and make things difficult for them (but not impossible, because that's no fun) while immersing you into the world as much as I can. I love giving voices to my NPCs and my players have bonded with many of them so well they bring them up months later (and in different campaigns)! I use music frequently and you'll have the option to adjust the volume or turn it off at your preference. I love using the special effects in Foundry, so you'll see fireball flames and spell effects galore. I think it's great when players go off the rails (as long as their fellow PCs approve) so if you want your monk to try jump off the shoulders of the dwarf fighter and grab that fraying rope, go for it! All those abilities are there for a reason!

Homebrew rules

I only have a few homebrew rules: I prefer +2 for flanking and I have a whole thing around reading spell scrolls. Other than that, it's mostly rules as written. We can discuss which version of a spell you prefer if there's something 2014 did better.

Safety

How dysonrules creates a safe table

Absolutely no "isms" are allowed in my games (racism, sexism, ageism, etc.) and things that should be banned in real life (such as being hateful in any way) are banned in my games. Specific things that might cause you to leave or not enjoy the game, we will discuss in session zero. Does seeing a cartoon spider make you want to close the game? I will remove spiders. Does any depiction of blood make you cringe? I will not use blood splat tokens. It's that simple. Any complaints you may have regarding other players or parts of the game should be brought to my attention immediately and we will have a private discussion to determine a solution. I will never bring private discussions to the group without your authorization. We will go over all of these in detail in Session Zero and I have a large list of Do and Do Nots for you to approve prior to your first game session.
