About the adventure

🐉Odyssey of the Dragonlords🐉 Explore Thylea, a mythic setting inspired by Greek legend, heroic epics, and tragic prophecy. This long-form campaign spans levels 1 to 15+, carrying humble heroes into the realm of Titans, Gods, and legendary allies as the fate of an age hangs in the balance. This is a true sandbox campaign. While great prophecies loom in the background, you choose how to engage with them; forging alliances, defying destiny, or carving your own legend across the map of Thylea. Player choice meaningfully shapes the world and its future. The campaign offers frequent opportunities for epic combat, roleplay, and open-world exploration, blending heroic fantasy with moral choices, divine politics, and world-altering consequences. 👾Heliana’s Guide to Monster Hunting👾 We’ll be using Heliana’s Guide to Monster Hunting for its harvesting, forging, and enchanting rules (with optional cooking if a player wants to lean into that role), beginning around levels 4–5. This crafting system allows players to wishlist officially published and Thylean magic items, then track, hunt, and harvest specific monsters to obtain the required materials and forge the magic items they want. Some monsters will be encountered naturally throughout Thylea, while others will lead to epic monster-hunting side quests to acquire the parts you need. 🔺Advancement🔺 Advancement uses milestone leveling, and how much additional power you pursue through monster hunting and crafting is entirely up to you; you can focus on leveling and story progression, or invest time hunting legendary creatures to supplement your growth with powerful magic items. This is a high-magic campaign, so the availability of magic items will be slightly higher than recommended in the DMG, with power earned through adventure rather than random loot. 💠Why this campaign?💠 🫒Beginner-friendly structure: Early on, players are given clear options with well-defined goals, making it easy to learn the game and understand what to do next. 🫒Tightly paced adventures: Most adventure arcs are designed to resolve in 2–3 sessions, giving each adventure a satisfying beginning, middle, and end. 🫒Meaningful player choice: After the first act, the campaign opens up into a true sandbox, letting you choose which adventures to pursue, in what order, and which to leave unexplored. 🫒A familiar yet fresh setting: Thylea’s Greek-inspired world features iconic mythological monsters alongside new and surprising twists. 🫒Personal heroic journeys: Every character follows an Epic Path; a unique, character-driven quest line with its own goals, story moments, and rewards. 🫒Depth for tactical players: This is a high-magic campaign with access to powerful subclasses and magic items, and you’ll need that power to stand against some of the legendary foes you’ll face. 📅Scheduling 📅 In the summer months (July and August) we will likely shift to a bi-weekly schedule.

About me

I’ve been playing Dungeons & Dragons for 4 years and Dungeon Mastering for 3. I recently ran a long-term home campaign of Odyssey of the Dragonlords, where I’ve guided my players from level 1 to 9. Since moving back to Canada, I have recently started a second home campaign. Along the way, I’ve learned how to bring a sandbox world to life with epic boss fights, mini dungeon crawls, social intrigue, stealth missions, and even a hex-crawl escape sequence. I enjoy tailoring published adventures to fit my table, taking the best parts and reshaping what doesn’t, to keep every session fresh and exciting. My goal as a DM is to create a collaborative and immersive story where players feel like true heroes.

Character creation

Creating your character

Please don't fully commit to a character before session 0. Instead come to session 0 with 2-3 character concepts. If you want to start planning some concepts... We'll be starting at level 1 and use the following guidelines: 💠Class💠 Any officially published 2024 class. 💠Subclass (at level 3)💠 Any officially published 2024 class or 2014 class that has not been updated to 2024. There are also several Thylean specific subclasses you can choose from. 💠Background💠 Any officially published 2024 background or a custom background (2 skills, 1 tool, 1 origin feat and either a +2/+1 or +1/+1/+1 ability score increase) 💠Species💠 Any officially published 2024 species without the legacy tag. There are also several Thylea specific species from which you can choose. 💠Abilities💠 Standard array, point buy. If you choose a Thylean species and/or subclass you also get a bonus +1 to an ability score of your choice. 💠Starting Equipment💠 Choose the default equipment for your class and background (50gp if custom background). You'll also start with a moon-touched weapon, staff or focus and 1 potion of healing. 💠Heliana's Feat (bonus starting feat)💠 Pick one of the feats below: ✨Expert Enchanter ✨ - You manipulate magical essence with a quick and subtle touch. - You gain proficiency in arcana, medicine, nature, religion or survival., - When you make an Enchanting check with a skill with which you are proficient, your proficiency bonus is doubled, - Each hour you spend enchanting an item counts as 2 hours towards the item's completion, ✨Expert Forger ✨ - An expert with your chosen tools, you can subtly alter an item's final form. - You gain proficiency in two tools of your choice, - When you make a Manufacturing check with a skill with which you are proficient, your proficiency bonus is doubled, - Each hour you spend forging an item counts as 2 hours towards the item's completion. ✨ Field Cook ✨ - Able to whip up a tasty meal from the rarest ingredients, your meals fuel the resolve of the most stalwart adventurers. - You gain proficiency with cook's utensils and brewer's supplies, - You can replace one type of ingredient in a recipe with any other ingredient type. - Each creature that consumes one portion of your meal is granted heroic inspiration. ✨ Expert Harvester ✨ - You have a knack for retrieving exceptional components from the gnarliest of corpses. - You gain proficiency in arcana, medicine, nature, religion or survival. - When you make a Harvesting check using a skill with which you are proficient, your proficiency bonus is doubled. - When you attempt to harvest a creature for which you don't have the required skill proficiency, you can add your proficiency bonus to the result of the roll. - You do not suffer disadvantage on your Harvesting checks as a result of choosing to perform both the Assessment and Carving checks alone.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

To prepare you should: 🗸Join the discord 🗸 Join the campaign on DnD Beyond for character creation (note: several of the Thylea specific character options are available as homebrew options. I can show you how to find them) 🗸 Read through the Epic Paths, each player will get to pick their own 🗸 Plan out 2-3 character concepts 🗸 Check your mic, speakers, etc. before game day.

What Malt brings to the table

🗸 A decent amount of DnDBeyond content for character creation plus the ability to create any Thylean specific options in Foundry 🗸 Maps, tokens, etc. for use in Foundry VTT 🗸 Knowledge of DnD 5e rules, character creation and optional systems 🗸 Knowledge of Foundry 🗸 Flexible storytelling 🗸 Written summaries at the end of major story arcs

Homebrew rules

We'll discuss these at Session 0 to agree on what the table wants to play but I usually use the following rules and interpretations: ⚔️Perkins Critical Hits: When a creature scores a critical hit, roll damage as usual and add the maximum possible value of the damage dice. ⚔️ Flanking: Attackers get a +2 while they are flanking an enemy. 🪽 Delayed Flight: A creature with a natural flying speed does not gain the use of that speed until 5th level. Before 5th level, such creatures can fall (60 feet per turn) any distance without taking damage, as their wings or other adaptations allow them to slow their descent. 🪢 Grapple: When dragging, the creature enters the space you left. When pushing, you enter the space the creature left. ⚔️ Initiating Combat: If a player (or enemy) initiates combat from stealth (or using something undetectable such as the sorcerer's subtle spell) you can resolve your action before initiative is rolled but you will have already used your action on your first turn in initiative (you'll still have movement and a bonus action). ⚔️ Death Saves: When a player character fails a death saving throw, the character gains 1 level of exhaustion. 💠Spells💠 🪄Magic Jar The humanoid requirement is ongoing; if it ceases to be met, the spell ends. 🪄Planar Spell Components Any spell that allows a creature to travel to a plane or realm requires an additional material component: an object from the destination plane made from precious metal or gems worth at least 100gp, if the material is nonmagical it is consumed. 🪄Simulacrum A simulacrum cannot cast simulacrum or wish. 🪄Summoning Limit A player character may have at most two summoned or conjured creatures at one time. 🪄Warcaster The spell must be an attack or impose a harmful effect.

How Malt creates a safe table

Content Notice This campaign is inspired by Greek mythology and the source material includes some adult themes. Please review the listed content warnings before joining. Most of these themes are part of the background of the world, not the focus of play. They exist in the setting, but are generally handled in a subtle, fade-to-black way rather than described in detail. For example, one of the main antagonists is portrayed as both a sibling and a spouse to another character. This incestual relationship is only stated and not explored in detail, and likely included to reflect mythological themes rather than for shock value. In one major city, slavery and racism exist as part of the setting, including a slave market involving a specific species. Players may choose how to engage with this: ignore it, oppose it, or attempt to change it. Sacrifice is a major theme in this setting and its source material. Ritual animal sacrifice is an in-world practice and often rewarded by the gods. References to child sacrifice exist in antagonists’ actions and can be ignored or opposed by the party. No graphic detail. Player comfort is important, and table boundaries will always be respected. Before Session 0, I’ll send out a brief survey. If anything you select looks like it might be a concern, I’ll reach out for a one-on-one chat to make sure everyone is comfortable and on the same page. During play, if anything feels uncomfortable, send an X in the chat or through Foundry’s private GM chat, and we’ll pause and adjust.
