About the adventure

In this pathfinder 1st edition adventure, the PCs find themselves defending the small town of Trunau from an orc assault force. The party then follows the trail of destruction left by their Giantish leaders, fighting ever stronger foes and discovering powerful giantslaying weapons. Eventually, they take the fight to Volstus himself, sieging the Storm Giant's Cloud Castle! This campaign requires no knowledge of the Golarion setting, and is suitable for newcomers and veterans alike. You'll be fighting a variety of Giants in mountains and other high elevation regions. Expect harsh terrain, imposing threats, and the occasional dragon! While there will be a bit of a learning curve, I have taught many players with no pathfinder experience (or no RPG experience at all), and have no problem doing so!

About me

Heya! I'm a long time DM who's run dozens of offline campaigns, from short experiments to 8 year long epics. I have a degree in Game Design, which makes me uniquely suited to making custom features in my games, for NPC and PC alike! I like my PCs to be powerful, even from low levels, and often give out extra bonuses to help the mechanics fit the narrative. I also have a background in LARPing, so improv and longer narratives come naturally to me.

Character creation

Creating your character

Build characters as instructed in the base game, except: Start at level 1, all content on the Archives of Nethys is allowed, but certain options may be vetoed if they disrupt the balance of the rest of the party. Roll 4d6, rerolling all 1s, then keep the three highest for each ability score. Make three sets of 6 stats, then choose which set you like the best. You can start at any age you want, with the appropriate age bonuses and penalties. Select two traits, ignoring the requirement that they be from different types. You may select a drawback to gain an additional trait. Also select a Campaign Trait from the Giantslayer Player's Guide, for a total of three traits (or four with a drawback). The Background Skills system is in play, granting +2 skillpoints per level to spend on those skills. Fighters receive the Combat Stamina feat for free. Divine fighting techniques are taught by the appropriate clergy, but do not require worshiping the associated god to acquire. Firearms are Commonplace (meaning that early firearms and their ammo cost 25% of their base value, and firearms are a martial weapon). Spells with a racial prerequisite are considered to be rare outside that race, but are still selectable. If your race doesn't have a Favored Class Bonus for your class, we can work together to create one that feels appropriate. Races will receive additional Gm-decided bonuses to bring them up to the approximate race-point total of the highest point value in the party. Starting gear is replaced with a custom system, and will be handled in or before Session 0. For future planning, the leadership feat is allowed, but only one cohort is allowed to be active with the party at a time. A written out backstory of a few paragraphs will award you one bonus hero point at character creation!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

There will be a group discord for the game, which we'll use for live voice chat during play. The sessions will be recorded purely for recap purposes, and won't be shared anywhere. The game itself will take place in the steam game Tabletop Simulator. While dice and digital character sheets will be provided inside Tabletop Simulator, feel free to use your own! Physical dice and character sheets are fine! However, a digital character sheet makes it easier to share and audit, to make sure there aren't any mistakes.

What Sokudon brings to the table

I love character voices, but I'm no professional voice actor! Expect bad impressions and goofy voices. Combat in this campaign in particular will be very tactical, as most of your enemies will be smarter than your average bear! Combat's not everything, though, and can be avoided with clever plans. Most of the rules I stick to as written, with some slight bending here and there, and custom abilities and items thrown in on top. If you start tweaking too much you may as well be playing a custom game! However, if there's a rule or mechanic that only makes the game worse for the players (not the PCs!), then we'll ignore it or change it!

Homebrew rules

Retrieving and drinking a potion is a move action. Magic weapons and armor don't need a +1 bonus before they can start getting special properties. Hero points are in play, and you can hold a number of them equal to your level + your highest ability modifier at a time. Hero points are given out more frequently. Fractional BAB adds up with multiclassing. You can use both traditional multiclassing and variant multiclassing at the same time. Occult rituals are in play, and can be learned for the same price as a wizard scribing a scroll. You can purchase any alchemical item with a higher than usual base DC, for an increased price. These items can also be crafted. A homebrew OSR-like dungeon turn system will be in use, with ten minute turns while exploring a dungeon.

Safety

How Sokudon creates a safe table

Before session 0, I'll link a Lines and Veils document. It'll be required of every player to review this document and add their personal Lines and/or Veils anonymously before session 0 is over. You can take a break at any time, no judgement. There will be a 10 minute break every hour.
