About the adventure

I wrote this one-shot inspired by H.P. Lovecraft's short story of the same name. I made changes to adapt to the setting of Faerun and to add combat (there are three combats). As you might imagine, the tone will be ominous. This adventure primarily focuses on exploration and combat. There will be some social encounters and of course there is room for theatrical roleplaying. The session will take between 4 and 5 hours.

About me

Hail and well met! My name is Chris! I've been a lover of fantasy and gaming since I was a kid. I'm currently a high school teacher of English, history, and psychology. I love watching a story come together and watching a party be creative and build synergy and power throughout a narrative. Beyond games and stories, I love travel, music (playing and listening), the outdoors (biking, kayaking, skiing), and reading (history, culture, religion, and philosophy).

Character creation

Creating your character

Once you join the adventure, I'll invite you to a DnD Beyond Campaign and a Discord channel. In the Discord, you can discuss what classes everyone in the party would like to play to come up with a balanced party. I'd be happy to help you build a character or plan out that balance within the party. Once you know what kind of character you want to build, you'll make it in DnD Beyond (the account is free). We will play using DnD Beyond's virtual tabletop (ambiguously called simply 'Maps'). Voice/video chat for the sessions will happen through Discord, which will also host a group chat for the party and me where we can scheme and conspire prior to the session.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

All you need is a DnD Beyond account (free version is fine) and a Discord account. Once you join the game in Startplaying.games, you'll receive a link for the DnD Beyond Campaign and the Discord Channel. Join both, and start building your character and scheming with your party mates! Message me on any of those platforms (though Discord is preferred) with any specific questions that you may have.

What Chris brings to the table

During this adventure, you'll encounter: -A handwritten, original story. -Atmospheric music that changes to suit the mood. -Custom-made maps created in Inkarnate -Varied combat encounters with strategic options and goals. -Avenues for characters with a variety of skill sets to shine. -Opportunities to be creative and strategic while staying within the confines of DnD 5.24.

Homebrew rules

- In order to avoid busywork, I won’t be tracking mundane ammunition, water or rations unless there is some sort of specific story beat in which you’re in a survival scenario where you don’t have access to towns and villages for an extended period of time, like a boat journey or a trip through the Underdark - Eliminating all currency except gold - We will use flanking, an old rule, and it will add +2 to attack rolls. This will apply to both monsters and PCs. It can stack on top of advantage and other effects like Bless or Bardic Inspiration. - Same with high/low ground. It will apply a +2/-2 that can stack with other buffs/penalties. This comes into play when one player/monster is attacking another that is on a space that is 10 feet higher/lower than the other -I use 'critical' saves, which I will explain more before the session. Basically, it adds some meaning to nat 1's and 20's on saving throws. - You can administer a potion to another character as a bonus action, but you must be within touch range to do so

Safety

How Chris creates a safe table

The basic rules are simple. Have fun, and don't be an asshole. Unfortunately, as this will be a one-time session, if a player doesn't already know how to do that, there simply isn't time to teach them, and they will be kicked. That has never happened in one of my sessions.
