About the adventure

"Shadow of the Watch" is a level 6 character D&D 5e one shot taken directly from the official Forgotten Realms: Adventures in Faerun book. This is a straightforward self-contained one shot. It's lighthearted with a fairly simple story. I tend to run games for newer players that have dabbled in D&D and want a little more experience. That said, more experienced players can enjoy this as a short break from an ongoing campaign.

About me

The joy of people getting together at the table has made me want to bring people together at the table. Hi, I'm Chad and I am new to the DM space. Although I've only played for two years I've experienced enough pure fun that I want others to experience the same feeling. My games will be geared toward those of you who are new/fairly new to D&D, with the hope you will fall in love with the game itself. More experienced players are certainly welcome as I believe you will have a fun experience. Expect the "rule of cool" and guidelines that are player-friendly.

Character creation

Creating your character

Create your level 6 character using dndbeyond.com (we will be using beyond maps for the virtual tabletop). If you have not used beyond maps before, it is very simple and can walk you through it in less than 3 minutes at the start of the session. You are free to use either 2014 rules or 2024 rules for your character build. Please use either standard array or point buy for your stats. Will ask that you use only official D&D sources for creation, and that does include official supplements (Tasha's Cauldron, Xanathar's Guide, the new Heroes of Faerun book, etc)

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need a dndbeyond.com account (free standard account minimum). Will also need an account on my Discord server- I'll provide the link when you are set. The discord will be used for voice/chat; webcam is optional. Join my discord here: https://discord.gg/BmkcdKJU

What Chad brings to the table

The goal of any session I run is for everyone to have fun. While the story itself is grounded and somewhat serious - I am not. The NPC's will likely will be ridiculous and the voices I provide for them will also be that way. I honor the general rules of D&D 5e but I will bend them if it makes sense, seems fun or someone has a cool idea.

Homebrew rules

Ties on dice rolls for attacks and saving throws go the player. Drinking a potion is a bonus action; giving a potion to a dropped player is an action. Flanking mechanic for advantage is used. I also use a mechanic called Grievous Wounds which is an optional device taken from the 3rd party Grim Hollow setting. When a character drops to 0 HP, that player will make a dice roll to determine if they also suffer a minor injury, a permanent injury or miraculously remain at 1 HP.

Safety

How Chad creates a safe table

Pretty simple: no racism, no sexism, no homophobia, no bullying. By no means am I a saint but common sense prevails here. It's not difficult to be nice to be people; we are here to enjoy ourselves. I will reach out before the session to each individual directly to find if there are any subjects or topics you may be uncomfortable with.
