About the adventure

Ever wanted to try D&D, but don't know where to start? Don't want to commit to several months of sessions before you've even rolled a dice? This game is perfect for you! This module from the "Candlekeep Mysteries" anthology is perfect for new players. In this 3-4 hour long one-shot, you will get a chance to experience the four main pillars of D&D: roleplay, combat, exploration and problem-solving. No prior experience is required, and you will be added to a discord where you can ask any questions in advance of the game. You can expect a welcoming and patient table, taking a learn-as-you-play approach.

About me

Hey there! I’m Miles, a longtime D&D enthusiast with about 8 years of adventuring under my belt and 2 years behind the DM screen. I’ve run everything from one-shots inspired by Candlekeep Mysteries and Keys from the Golden Vault to longer, story-rich campaigns like The Wild Beyond the Witchlight. I also love mixing things up with a bit of homebrew, adding unexpected twists and personal flair to keep every table feeling fresh. Whether you’re here for epic stories, clever heists, or a little magical chaos, I’ve got you covered. New players are always welcome at my table. I enjoy teaching the rules in a clear, supportive way while keeping the game moving and engaging. Expect collaborative storytelling, character-driven moments, and the occasional bit of delightful chaos that keeps every session exciting and unpredictable.

Character creation

Creating your character

Players can choose to make their character sheets through D&D beyond or can choose from a selection of pre-made character sheets. If making the character, stats should be rolled for and should draw from any of the 2014 core rules or official extended materials.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

We will be using D&D beyond for character sheets, Roll20 for the virtual tabletop, and discord for the voice chat, so players will need accounts for each of these. Players will also need to download the Beyond 20 browser extension. We will be using the ruleset for the 2014 version of D&D 5E. All of this can be explained upon joining the discord server! You will also need a working microphone, a stable internet connection and a laptop/computer. Webcam use is encouraged but not required.

What Miles brings to the table

I use light ambient music to help set the mood throughout the game. I aim to create a relaxed environment where creativity is encouraged and new players are supported.

Homebrew rules

Potions: Potions cost a bonus action to use, but using a full action to use a potion will the full HP possible for that potion. Critical Hits: Rolling a "critical hit" (a natural 20 on an attack roll) will do full possible damage plus rolled damage. This is to make sure that crits are always rewarded. Death Saving Throws: Death save throws will be rolled "behind the screen", meaning that only the Game Master and the player making the roll will know if the roll was a success or failure. This is to bring an extra layer of tension and realism to combat

Safety

How Miles creates a safe table

A link to a lines and veils document will be in the discord server and reviewed as a group in a mini-session zero at the start of the game. If something during play becomes uncomfortable, players are welcome to message me privately or step away. We will also take a break around the three hour mark.
