About the adventure

In this loose adaptation of the first Darkest Dungeon video game, the player characters have been hired to accompany a recently appointed noble to his new home: a corrupted and dilapidated domain once presided over by a villainous lord. As the late lord grew increasingly interested in dark magicks and the occult, his mind and morals corroded, and so too did his lands. For five years the land has sat lordless, but now a new heir to the estate has been found, and it is your mission to aid him in righting the wrongs of his ancestor and making this land into something habitable, even prosperous! Monsters, curses, and madness lurk around every corner, but with faith and determination, your torch can light the way to a new future for the long suffering citizens of the estate! Even though that may entail facing the horrors underneath the manor, and coming face to face with the denizens of the Darkest Dungeon. This game can be imagined as equal parts monster-hunting and settlement-building. Players will spend their time investigating and clearing the lands of the various threats to the town, and then using the resources gained to improve the lives of the citizens of the estate. As the town grows, players will choose where to allocate resources and will receive in-game benefits from those decisions. The aim is to create a mini-sandbox, where players have free reign to steer the future of a fully realized and richly detailed village and watch it grow to become a force to be reckoned with, all the while battling otherworldly threats!

About me

Hi friends! My name is Austin, I've been a professional theatre and TV actor for 20 years, and a role playing fan for nearly as long! However, when video game rpgs could no longer scratch the itch, I dived into ttrpgs in 2017 and haven't looked back. I've run many multi-year campaigns for friends, both in person and online, and I'm excited to make take the leap into professional GMing! Take a look at the Dream Roll Gaming channel on YouTube, a short-lived but very rewarding project I had with a few actor friends of mine. In those videos you can get a sense of my style as a GM. I prefer games with an open-ended world which sets problems for the player characters, and lets the plot unfold as a consequence of their behavior. If you are looking for a space to bring a character to life and to have a hand in crafting a world, I'm your guy.

Character creation

Creating your character

Your characters will be level 3 adventurers, specifically, adventurers who have agreed to relocate to a backwater hamlet for an indefinite length of time and for an undetermined rate of pay. What would make them willing to uproot themselves and risk life and limb on such a hazy proposition? Altruism? Morbid curiosity? A crippling debt to be paid? Holy fervor? Hiding from something? We will create all characters during Session Zero to ensure that they fit well within the world and the campaign, and with each other. We will be using the 2014 Fifth Edition rules and rolling for stats. Feel free to come to Session Zero with concepts in mind, but refrain from building characters until we can do it together! This is a unique homebrew world with some factors that may narrow down your decision making, and you'll want a character suited to the setting.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need accounts on DndBeyond as well as AlchemyRPG, and you will want to download the AlchemyRPG application. You will also be invited to my Discord server, but this will only be for fun and friends between games and won't be used during games. We will be using mics and webcams through Alchemy, so please have suitable tech for both!

What Dream Roll DM brings to the table

I will send you an invite for the campaign on DnDBeyond with full book sharing enabled so you can access all the options that I currently have purchased on the website for character creation. I will be using AlchemyRPG for vibes and visuals, and PocketBard for ambient music and sound effects. The Alchemy program is very simply and easy to learn so have no fear!

Homebrew rules

This campaign will use the "Gritty Realism" rest variant, where a short rest lasts for 8 hours, and a long rest requires 5 days of downtime. This rule allows for fewer combat scenarios per day, which will mean that each fight feels more impactful. It also allows players to spend more time interacting with the world during downtime without the characters feeling like they're "wasting time". I also intend to incorporate certain systems from MCDMs Strongholds and Followers book, which includes rules for settlement-building and recruiting NPCs both as resident crafters and artisans and as followers when the need arises.

Safety

How Dream Roll DM creates a safe table

We will be going over boundaries in Session Zero, and where our personal limits are. Anonymous X cards are available in the Alchemy RPG application and you are welcome to use it as any time. This is a fairly dark campaign with a lot of horror themes which might be too morbid for some, so use discretion when joining. I've given an exhaustive list of content warnings, but it should be noted that while these topics won't be constantly present, the tone of the game can be generally quite dour, so you'll want to be down for a gloomy, gothic game!
