About the adventure

Welcome to the City of the White Wolf. While this campaign is built on the legendary foundations of The Enemy Within, widely considered one of the greatest RPG campaigns ever written, we are doing things differently. We are skipping the first two parts, and diving straight into the heart of it: Middenheim. This deep, immersive city sandbox campaign will begin in the weeks leading up to the world-shaking events of Power Behind the Throne. Before the plot thickens, you will have the time to truly live in Middenheim. By the time the gates open for the Great Carnival, and we begin the Power Behind the Throne, you won't just be visiting Middenheim, you will be one with its energy, fully woven into the very fabric of the City of the White Wolf.

About me

I’m Wayland (or Wēland in Old English), a GM with over 40 years of experience running tabletop roleplaying games. I am the founder and chair of one of London’s largest weekly roleplaying communities: www.diceonthehill.co.uk I also host the RPG Blokes Podcast, where we encourage new players, especially those of a certain vintage (like me), to start gaming. You can check us out: www.rpgblokes.com.

Character creation

Creating your character

If you have a spare hour or so before your first session we can do a full character gen. Head over to the Discord for that. Otherwise I use a staged approach to get you into the heart of Middenheim as quickly as possible: For your first session, we’ll establish an "Outline PC" based on your answers to a few key questions (provided prior to the session, or at the start). Species, Career, age, and gender. You will also be provided with a generic stat block. Your given name will be randomised, in true Warhammer style. Once you have that first session under your belt we'll head over (at your leisure) to the dedicated Campaign Discord channel for full character generation. Ideally this will be completed before your next session. If you prefer a deep-dive approach, a 1-to-1 Session Zero can be booked separately to hammer out every detail of your character, and it's place in Middenheim, The City of the White Wolf.

The current party

We currently have a Human Scholar on board.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Join the Campaign Discord Channel. This is the hub for lore, rules discussion, and out-of-game updates. You won't have to join this, and we can communicate in other ways if you like. If you'd like to pop in now, take a look, check out the rules, and ask me some questions before you sign up, then please do. https://discord.gg/ETMXrWHZ Create a Let's Role Account. We will use Let’s Role as our virtual tabletop. It is a very lightweight system used only for battle maps, providing images, and for rolling dice. While it can be done on mobile, a desktop or laptop is preferable, the larger the screen, the better for you viewing maps and bits and pieces. The campaign link will be provided to you once you join. Set up Zoom. Our sessions run on Zoom. A dedicated private link will be sent to you privately before the session begins. Hardware. You will need a good quality microphone and a decent internet connection. Regarding video, I will always use it as a GM so you will see me; however, whether you use yours or not is entirely up to you if it makes you feel more comfortable. This setup does not require a high-powered PC.

What Wayland brings to the table

I provide the full WFRP 4.5e Grim and Perilous Edition PDF Ruleset via a private Dropbox link. For those who prefer the traditional feel of paper and pencil locally, the sheets are designed to be printed easily. Alternatively, I offer a Google Form character sheet which allows you manage your PC online and share your progress more easily with me for ongoing feedback and advice. Our sessions are held on Zoom, and the private link will be sent to you directly. Between sessions, our dedicated Discord channel serves as our community hub to discuss rules, clarify mechanics, and discuss the dynamics of the game. You do not need to be familiar with the WFRP system. In fact, even if you have never role-played before I am more than happy to guide you. This game is particularly suited to new players who want to jump straight into a story without the pressure of "homework." The rules are lightweight and intuitive, and are there to be broken. My goal is to keep the game fast-flowing and immersive, ensuring the rules never get in the way of the drama. Whether you are a veteran or a complete novice, you can focus entirely on inhabiting your character while I handle the complexities.

Homebrew rules

I run a bespoke modification of WFRP 4e refined over several years of play-testing. Whilst I believe 4th Edition is the best version of the WFRP system. The rules can often feel too high-powered, losing that essential grim and perilous feel. This 4.5e Grim & Perilous Edition adjusts the mechanics to stay fast-flowing. For instance, I have stripped out the cumbersome "Advantage" system in favour of a narrative, fast-paced combat flow where the drama of the fight is the priority. Combat is deadlier and less crunchy. You get the full WFRP experience , including careers and lore, but with a system that allows us to play Middenheim exactly as the original designers intended. And... don't worry, you'll still have Fate Points! šŸ˜…

Safety

How Wayland creates a safe table

If anyone ever feels uncomfortable, highlight it to me immediately and it will be handled as a priority. PVP (Player vs. Player) conflict is avoided to maintain a healthy dynamic at the table. Open Communication: I keep an eye on private message channels throughout the session. If something makes you uncomfortable as the game is in progress, message me privately and I will address it. Breaks and Aftercare: We take a short breaks during the session. I will always be available during that times if you need to speak quickly about any concerns. Community Discussion: Our Discord channel has dedicated areas to discuss the engagement and address anything that caused concern during play. Content Warning: It must be stated that the Warhammer world contains themes that can be challenging. You will encounter political intrigue, racial tensions, depravity, violence, and discrimination. Important Note: It is vital to remember that this is a fantasy world. Nothing depicted or portrayed in the game reflects my personal feelings or beliefs; we are inhabiting a fictional setting to explore its stories together. My goal is to ensure that while the world is "Grim and Perilous," the environment at the table remains respectful and safe for everyone.
