About the adventure
In the mossy reaches of Dolmenwood... š Uncover lost treasure ā Navigate the threat of war š§ Resolve fey vengeance ⨠Dabble with ancient magics šŖ And become legendary! Learn to play Daggerheart, the fantasy heartbreaker from Darrington Press and Critical Role in the deep and dangerous setting of indie darling Dolmenwood! Explore a lush, wondrous, and mysterious hex map rich in old school dungeons and dangers! Learn many of the secrets of fey lords, witches, the Pluritine Church, politicking noble houses, a slumbering dragon, and more! New adventurers welcome! What is Dolmenwood? Dolmenwood is an old school homebrew setting inspired by British Isles folklore. It became a crowdfunding success and critical darling for its beautiful artwork, diverse factions, nigh bottomless lore, and more! Adventurers will be able to set their own goals such as becoming a powerful sorcerer with the Drune, parlay with fey lords and the powerful Cold Prince, or confront the dark malignancy Atunuwe the Nag Lord! Why use Daggerheart? Daggerheart offers modern takes on class, kin, community, and more. Play as a goat-headed Breggle using the Fawn or Firbolg ancestries, an otherworldly Elf or Pixie, a feline Grimalkin with the Katari ancestry, an upstart Human, an arboreal Mossling with the Fungril ancestry, a slippery or scaled beastfolk as the Galapa or Ribbet ancestries, or a bat-faced Woodgrue using the Goblin or Simian ancestries. (Clanks, Drakona, Dwarves, Halflings, Infernis, Orcs, and Giants are not common in Dolmenwood, but players can consider them recent arrivals if you don't mind the suspicions of locals.) Add in the diverse class options and communities to create a one-of-a-kind hero! What is West Marches? West Marches is a game style that can accommodate many players and even multiple GMs. Not everyone needs to be at the table at once. Adventurers recruit one another for specific quests; then, the GM crafts the details to meet those goals. This fosters a deeply player-driven experience. Players can join some or all adventures, or maintain a stable of characters to pursue multiple questlines at once! Whether you're nostalgic for how TTRPGs used to feel or are brand new to the hobby, Dolmenwood X Daggerheart offers an excellent setting for you! Your GM will have a new dungeon to delve each session, or you can hit the trails to forge your own path and toward your own goal! About me
I go by the Gentle GM. Even in the midst of death-defying adventure or bone-chilling horror, I aim to be a warm and welcoming game master. I've run games for children players, seniors, and all ages in between. I try to suffuse hope, respect, and warmth into every session I run. I offer: š³ļøāš A welcoming, inclusive play style š„ Player-focused flair and action š§ Open-ended storytelling š Action, horror, awe, and comedy in-game āļø Settings with themes of justice and transformation š Over a decade of game mastering experience šļø Know-how with dozens of systems At thirteen, two friends and I huddled around the Dungeons & Dragons 3e starter set, laughing at a natural 20 to breakdown a door with the fighter's head. In high school, I found the Call of Cthulhu rulebook and made investigators with friends, still clueless how to actually play. In 2014 with the launch of D&D 5e and Call of Cthulhu 7e, I committed to running these games and an old love sparked brilliantly to life! I've since taught dozens their first TTRPG! I'm also an inveterate dabbler in TTRPGs. If you're curious if I run a particular game, just ask! Images are used with permission from James' RPG Art, https://jamesrpgart.com.
View Profile āCharacter creation
Creating your character
During the zero session, we'll create characters, sketch backstories, cover rules basics, and play an introductory encounter. Daggerheart character creation is Step 1: Choose your class (and subclass) from Bard, Druid, Guardian, Ranger, Rogue, Seraph, Sorcerer, Warrior, and Wizard. The setting will have some flavoring of character options. For example, the Sentinel: Winged Seraph must be tied to the Pluritine Church. Step 2: Choose your Heritage from the diversity of Daggerheart options. Note that many heritages (Clanks, Drakona, Dwarves, Halflings, Infernis, Orcs, and Giants) are very rare in the setting and others (Firbolg, Faun, Fungril, Goblin, Katari, Ribbet, and Simiah) are reflavored to fit the setting. Step 3: Assign Character Traits, which include the +2, +1, +1, 0, 0, and -1 modifiers to traits. Step 4: Record Additional Character Information such as evasion, HP, stress, Hope, and Fear. Step 5: Choose Your Equipment, including two class-appropriate weapons and armor. Step 6: Create Your Background will deepen your understanding of the setting and relationships to the world. This is a great time to ask the GM general knowledge questions. Step 7: Create Your Experiences, which are special features that can be activated with Hope to grant +2 to a roll. Step 8: Choose Your Domain Cards, granting you your particular abilities. Step 9: Create Your Connections, which connects your party's characters to one another.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
Players will need 1) a Discord profile, as audio and visual will be handled over Discord; 2) a mic and headphones (webcam is welcome, but not required); and 3) a computer with internet connection for the Foundry VTT interface. Note: Foundry features can be graphically intensive. Please notify the GM if your computer is older than five years. Phone and tablet support is not available. Players can use physical dice if they prefer (two distinct d12s). Foundry VTT offers dice, rules, and character sheet integration.
What Caleb | The Gentle GM brings to the table
I have over ten years of game mastery experience and have already started running this setting! Dolmenwood promises a dark fairy tale world inspired by British Isles legends. Meet strange, delightful, and otherworldly characters! Mythic and mischievous monsters await in forest glade, dungeon, and even in village streets! Or delve unplumbed dungeons to recover treasure, lost artifacts, and discover lost lore! All of which I plan to bring to life with physical performances, ambient audio, and VTT integration! The setting and exploration rules provide guidance, not walls, for telling a story driven by player curiosity and inventiveness. I'll be integrating dungeon maps, location art, and a hexcrawl overmap for players to explore. Ambient music will be available for players as well (currently through Monument Studios Fantasy Plus application).
Homebrew rules
Daggerheart offers an elegant, deep modern ruleset. If homebrewing rules are needed, that'll be discussed at the table to improve gameplay. There will be some variation between Dolmenwood kin and Daggerheart ancestry, with the Dolmenwood details taking priority in the fiction.
