About the adventure

Welcome citizen. It is year 214 of Computer. You are a citizen of Alpha Complex, a Utopian society overseen by a benevolent and omniscient Computer that cares for your every need. To ensure the smooth running of this idyllic society, the Computer employs trusted and capable citizens as troubleshooters. You are one such troubleshooter, and you and your elite team will be undertaking yet another mission in the service of the Computer and Alpha Complex. As always, this mission will be completely safe and a lot of fun for all of you. Trust the Computer. The Computer is your friend. --- This will be a - beginner friendly - one shot of Paranoia using the Paranoia XP ruleset. Paranoia is a game of a darkly humorous future, where players live in post-apocalyptic dystopia run by a paranoid AI. Unfortunately, most people who have heard of Paranoia but never played it usually have the wrong impression of this game. Either it's "oh yeah it's that game where everyone kills everyone" or "oh yeah it's that wacky game where shenanigans happen." I hate the word "shenangians". I could go off on a big rant here, but I don't have the characters. Instead, I'll say that the humour in Paranoia doesn't come from slapstick and custard pies, but rather from the player interactions and the absurd bureacracy. Think Brazil meets 1984 meets Dr Strangelove. For those of you unfamiliar with Paranoia the basic gist is this: * It's a sci fi dystopia set in an underground city ruled by a Paranoid AI * Every player is a clone and has five replacement clones. This means character death happens a LOT * It is very much a PVP game * The players don't know the rules, and knowing the rules is teeason which is punishable by summary execution As this is a beginner friendly game I will be providing players with a little document that gives them all the overview they need about the setting and how to play. Ultimately this IS a comedy game, so it should be approached in the spirited of light-hearted fun. However, if you get upset about other players messing with you are trying to kill your character THIS WILL NOT BE FOR YOU. Also, don't expect the GM to be nice and provide warnings for potentially fatal behaviour. Instead, bring a cheerful, whimsical attitude to death and you should be fine. And remember: STAY ALERT TRUST NO-ONE KEEP YOUR LASER HANDY The Computer is your friend.

About me

Long time GM - I started in the 1980s and have been the "forever GM" since then. Honestly, I have more fun running games than playing so I'm looking forward to sharing that love with others! I'm definitely not a rules heavy GM - I'm much more about letting players explore their characters and interact, and I'm happiest when I'm sitting back listening to interparty drama! Over the years I've run a ton of different systems with a heavy focus on World of Darkness. However, remember that part about loving interparty drama? Well, my favourite games to run are Paranoia and Alien - I love myself a bit of PVP and these settings perfectly let players explore this aspect of TTRPGs safely! When it comes to running games, I'm a massive fan of music and sound effects and I love using them to help build atmosphere. So, if you fancy checking out games that are slightly different from D&D (although I can happily run that too!) please let me know!

Character creation

Creating your character

All players will be assigned a character prior to the first session. This will include a full brief, a character sheet, objectives and secrets. Character sheets will be included in the VTT.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

As long as you have a Discord and Roll20 account you'll be good to go. I'll provide details of the servers. Also, as mentioned before, I will provide character briefs and a setting overview document. Please read them beforehand. Failure to read the documents is treason.

What Iain brings to the table

I'm a theatre of the mind guy, and Paranoia is PERFECTLY suited to that. In fact, the book tells every good Paranoia GM to encourage their players to be fun and descriptive. Fun and descriptive players get benefits. Boring players tend to die. So, there will be no combat grids, virtual miniatures or any of that nonsense. Instead, I will revel in your glorious descriptions of how you are betraying your teammat....er....co-operating to ensure a satisfcatory outcome for friend computer. Oh and I love playing around with music. As this is Paranoia most of it will sound like elevator music. You'll grow to love it.

How Iain creates a safe table

Ultimately this is a comedy game, so I want people to just have a good time. That being said, if there's anything that you don't want to see, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE tell me beforehand. No need to explain why - if you don't like spiders then, BOOM, no spiders. It's that simple. On a serious note though, if you are uncomfortable with betrayal or betraying others or losing your character (frequently) this will NOT be the game for you. Most of Paranoia's humour comes from the fact that characters can't help betraying each other. It is obviously just a game, but betrayal can be extremely uncomfortable for some, so if you're one of those folks stay away from Paranoia - you're clearly too nice for this game :) Oh, and a final note - Paranoia features drug use. It's nothing crazy; they Computer administers medication, usually in the form of "Happy Pills", to citizens that are being problematic. That being said, if you've got issues around drugs best to avoid Paranoia too.
