About the adventure

The Keymaster buried his greatest secret, the schematics to the Lock Absolute, in a vault at the center of his lair. A priceless treasure for any king with secrets to hide, the schematics have remained untouched for centuries since the vault will only open for those clever enough to find the four hidden keys and turn four hidden locks. This is beginner-friendly one-shot set in a "one-page dungeon" written for "Old School Renaissance" style play by Ben Milton, the creator of Knave and Knave 2E! Tone: My version of "Lair of the KM" is warm, lighthearted, goofy, a little cartoonish, and even unserious at times. But beware! Your Knave's life is at stake every time swords are drawn or spells are cast! So don't fight fair! This game will be light on character development but high on fantastic adventure! It will feature slapstick and physical humor with physical (imagined) puzzles and dangers and no word, letter, or number-based puzzles. You can learn to play Knave and have fun at the same time. Knave 2E is a rules-light, exploration-driven fantasy role playing game written by Ben Milton. It uses a d20 system with a 0-10 ability score scale. It features a slot-based inventory system and is designed for fast-paced play with a focus on creative problem-solving, especially for dungeon crawling and travel. The game provides a robust toolkit for game masters and players, with numerous random tables for world generation and offers flexible, classless character creation. When you sign up I will invite you to my Discord Server. When you join I will send you my "Guide to Creating Knaves" to help you with character creation. It includes tables for careers, spell and equipment and tells you everything you need to do to create a character and doesn't require you to own the Knave book. If you are new to my games, I'll also schedule a one-on-one voice chat prior to the start of the game so we can go over any questions that you may have. We will use Discord for voice, video, text chatting, and rolling dice. We will use Owlbear Rodeo for map and scene imagery. You do not need an account for Owlbear Rodeo but are welcome to create one.

Character creation

Creating your character

When you join my Discord server I will provide you with a form-fillable PDF to use as a character sheet and a guide that I wrote for character creation. The Knave 2e System supports remarkably fast and easy character creation. It's a very simple 6 step process: At First Level: 1) Choose or roll on a table for 2 professions; each profession comes with flavor and some equipment. 2) Distribute Ability Modifier Points. You have three points total to assign to 1-3 of the six abilities. 3) Determine how many item slots you have and choose your other inventory. 4) Set your Hit Points to max (6) or roll if you prefer. 5) Determine your armor class, motivation, defining traits, and ancestry. 6) Give your character a name. There are no defined classes or ancestries (heritage, species, etc) in Knave 2e. You can flavor these however you wish. But no one has darkvision. No one, except your adversaries! You can buy a PDF of the Knave 2E Rulebook on DriveThruRPG and you can buy a hardcopy on Swordfish Islands. I highly recommend it!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need: 1) A Discord account. 2) A headset with a microphone and a web cam. I prefer that all players be on camera, but of course we will make exceptions if you have a strong preference otherwise. 3) A web browser. 4) You can roll physical dice at home or use the dice bot in my Discord server. I will roll using the Dice bot.

What GM Old Scratch brings to the table

We will lean into the rule of cool with rulings and not rules and have a good time with it. This game will be casual and beginner-friendly. It's a pretzels and craft beer kind of game. I do not expect you to have a detailed and well-written backstory for your character. Also, I do not expect you to use character voices though you are welcome to! I sometimes do.

Homebrew rules

I use some home brew rules with my Knave games, most of which come from Shadowdark. I will give you a complete list in my "OS Guide to Knavery" when you join my Discord server. 🔹Contested Checks: If multiple creatures are working against each other on a conflicting task, a contested check decides who succeeds. 🔹Damage Dice Damage dice “explode”. (for PCs only) 🔹Shadowdark's 1/2 Hour Real Time Torch Timer 🔹Adversary Morale checks based on CHA DC15 🔹All Shadowdark player movement/distance rules 🔹Shields can be used to completely negate one melee attack (PC's only) 🔹Shadowdark's 2d20 advantage/disadvantage and maneuver on nat 20 That maybe sounds like more than it is - this is a fast and fun game!

Safety

How GM Old Scratch creates a safe table

We will discuss Safety tools at the start of the session and I will ask each player to complete a Deck of Player Safety questionnaire before we proceed further. Doing that takes about two minutes and only requires a web browser. If anyone is uncomfortable at any time with the game content all they need to do tell me and we will stop the action, retcon the story, and proceed. No reason needs to be given but we're certainly open to hearing ALL concerns.
