About the adventure

SESSION 0 IS FREE - includes safety tools discussion, character creation help and mini-session gameplay to get a feel for how I run things! "The final decree has been made. The Empress of the Hapan Imperium has begun her final conquest of the galaxy - the Dawnbringers of the Imperium lead their Mandalorian armies via the Hapan Battle Dragons as they march through the galaxy world-by-world, system-by-system, sector-by-sector. At the edge of the galaxy, the Shadow Ascendancy revives ancient superweapon projects in their battles against the Imperium, bringing their full scientific might against using perfected clone soldiers supported by elite droid commandos. On the Outer Rim, the Phaedra Collective has risen to the top of the underworld, with the likes of the Hutt Cartel and Black Sun bowing for now, but always lurking for opportunities. The last bastion of hope lies in the hands of the Starfire Resistance. Lead by the mysterious Queen of Air & Darkness, working with the Teridrac Pirates, and training the next generation of Jedi Knights..." Welcome to the Horizon era - set in the future of the Star Wars timeline - rediscover a galaxy far, far away as you forge the next generation of heroes, knights, rogues, and scoundrels! 600 years after Return of the Jedi, the campaigns of the Horizon Era will send players on epic galactic adventures inspired by the movies and shows (both pre and post Disney), as well as content from the Legends version of the Expanded Universe. Don't know much beyond the movies? No problem! We're in the future with new factions, new allies, new enemies - create and discover it all together! Each Horizon campaign features a unique storyline and will be adapted to the PCs that experience it, building personal stories rather than using pre-made or cookie-cutter content. Love the idea but not the time slot? Look out for other listings! This is a voice-based game played theater of the mind on Discord and web browser. I'll be providing over ten years of experience running the FFG/EDGE system with deep characters and worldbuilding. Action, adventure, intrigue, drama, and romance can all be found here and this campaign is LGBT-friendly (not just for players/PCs, but with representation in the NPC cast and possible romances and love interests featured). My campaigns are very evocative of story-oriented RPG video games (such as the Old Republic games, but also Mass Effect, Final Fantasy, Baldur's Gate, etc.) and include deep relationships with NPCs (even some joining the party as companions) and epic setpiece moments that have been designed around offering exciting moments and story revelations. Horizon will feature high-level XP for true heroic adventures, but I am a Beginner Friendly GM, as long as you are open to learning on your feet. If movies were set in this era, you would be the stars - if you want to be a Luke Skywalker, you can. If you want to be more of a Chewbacca, helping out your team, that's welcome too.

About me

I'm Matt, but you can also call me Nitro. (He/Him; early 30s) I'm a variety content creator (Galvanitro) that does streaming, animation, and writing. Went to college for Game Design and Film Studies, with a secondary focus in Mythology - all of my life I've been passionate about storytelling and gameplay (especially with stats/mechanics) so tabletop RPGs are the perfect union of both my passions and my skills. I've been in the tabletop space for nearly fifteen years as both Player and GM, but mostly GMing. Throughout my years I've played several systems, but none of have appealed to me as much as the Star Wars RPG system made by Fantasy Flight Games / EDGE Studio. Star Wars is a favorite franchise of mine and so it was a natural fit for me along with their narrative style. I have run this system for over 10 years and nearly 2000 hours as a GM. Often throughout the last decade, I was a GM for other GMs because of both my ability to run engaging and interesting games but also due to my personal preference to be behind the GM screen - Forever GM is a badge of pride for me, not a disappointing reality. I also want to take a moment to say that my games are LGBTQ+ inclusive in both players and game content - there will be LGBT content in the worlds and NPCs whether the players bring their own or not. Lastly - I myself just joined a Daggerheart campaign as a player - if all goes well, I might have another system to run in the coming year that I'll be excited to add!

Character creation

Creating your character

My campaigns are Star Wars main character adventures - and the character creation embraces that! High level play from the start that will only get higher. 500 Post-Creation XP to start with + a campaign journey that will take you higher with 10-20 XP earned per session! We'll expect players to be working on their characters going into Session 0, working together in Session 0 to get the characters finished (if they haven't already), and if time allows, play a mini-session to give everyone a chance to feel out their characters for the first time and finalize everything after including tweaks. All sourcebooks will be available for character creation options, but there will a document available to all players if you join the campaign that details species that are/aren't available, restrictions on starting gear, and more. You will be provided additional starting gear credits as part of the higher XP play, so that's to balance it. We do have some homebrew rules - those will be fully provided for in the campaign's character creation documents, but some are disclosed below in the homebrew section.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

The only physical equipment you need is a computer and a microphone (although I also recommend headphones for more comfortable listening and to avoid mic feedback/repetition to improve the quality of life for all players). For programs, you will need: 1) Discord (game information will be provided on a safe, moderated server with private group-based channels as well as individual player channels for personal communication so that direct messaging isn't required - engage with the game and group when you want during the week, be able to take a break when you want and just wait until next session, it's up to you) 2) Oggdude's Character Generator (an incredible game resource available for free download that allows you to build your characters completely within it and print PDFs with finished sheets for group upload use. Full download and installation instructions will be provided as well as any needed support to get it working.) That's all - we'll use a free online dice roller that saves our sessions for the rest.

What Nitro (Matt) brings to the table

As a Game Master, I bring to the table over a decade of experience running the FFG Star Wars system. My games are primarily voice-based played theater of the mind on Discord and web browser. We'll use ambient music, literal Star Wars music as well as other themed libraries. While I'm not a professional voice actor, I'll be providing years of experience narrating scenes and providing characterful voices and portrayals, as well as unique sounds and efforts for alien species. I am mostly a Rules as Written kind of GM, but I can and will extend the rules to allow for instances of cool moments as long as we can find a way to represent it fairly in the mechanics. You can expect a wide mixture of combat, roleplay and more. Everything is represented, this is a universal Star Wars experience - at the start of a session you might be in a heated starship battle and by the end, half the party could be caught in a diplomatic gala trying to smooth-talk their way out starting a war while the other half is avoiding a bounty hunter in a server vault. Star Wars is an almost limitless setting - the campaign's adventures will adapt to the characters the players create and the choices they make. Check out my GM profile for more!

Homebrew rules

We will not be using the Obligation/Duty/Morality system as is written. Instead it will be utilized as background biography/personality traits and given a flat +10 Creation XP bonus rather than different options. Characteristics, Force Rating, and Specializations are all capped at 5. Force Powers will have some time progression limitations to purchasing their talents. The Jury Rigged talent cannot be used to change the Advantage requirement on Weapon Qualities. When committing Force Dice, you do not take any strain until the first round or action that the committed effect would be utilized. From then on, you will take 1 strain per power with committed dice each round until you end the commitment. Personal & Planetary Damage use a ratio of 4:1 instead of 10:1, and all other effects determined on this scale are similarly converted. (Breach 1 = Pierce 4, it does stack when relevant) All Specializations will be available but there will be some lore alterations or narrative requirements to taking some in order to fit the setting differences.

Safety

How Nitro (Matt) creates a safe table

We'll have a Lines and Veils document that everyone will have a link to and can update/edit at anytime. Players also have the option to message me an X card at any time to stop the game and adjust accordingly. There will be a Session 0 provided at campaign start that will give players the opportunity to meet and fill out things like the Lines and Veils. (Note: if you join late, you will be provided a personal Session 0 with me that will include catch up on the campaign events, and an opportunity to introduce yourself to the players and meet them at the start of your first session.) During sessions, there will be a 5-15 minute break about halfway to allow players to breathe, get snack, use the bathroom, etc. Questions or concerns can also be expressed freely at this time. After every session, there will be a channel for Stars & Wishes and I welcome any discussions that those brings about how we can improve the game experience. If time allows, I will be happy to discuss the game session with players afterward in voice, and very much encourage players to discuss the game during the week. The tone and style of this game is PG-13 in nature and the descriptions will largely be as such 95% of the time (rarely something existential or dramatic may get an intense description). As this is Star Wars and a sci-fi/fantasy setting, there should be some expected brushing against content warnings, but I've only included the basics until we see if there's anything players want to avoid in Session 0.
