About the adventure

The Forbidding has failed. The Mandate of Heaven has been broken. The once shining capital is overrun with the terrors of the underworld. A decade ago, the land of Lu-En was thrown into turmoil after the royal dynasty failed to perform The Forbidding, a once-a-generation ritual to seal away the underworld's influence upon the the land and retain the Mandate of Heaven. Warlords now bicker over the remnants of the fallen kingdom while the common people struggle to survive in a world filled with yaoguai and spirits. The Empire was far from perfect but is this new haunted and violent reality any better? Tales of Lu-En uses a West-Marches style structure of episodic stories of those living, fighting and journeying in this time to build a rich and haunting world inspired by Asian (particularly East Asian) folklore, the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Journey to the West, Final Fantasy X and Princess Mononoke. 🗺️ The heart of this campaign is episodic exploration and roleplay of a war-torn world reeling after a calamity. An anthology of smaller adventures will tell a story about why The Forbidding failed, the consequences of it's failure and what the people of Lu-En are trying to salvage in it's wake. 🛡️ Combat is tense and terrifying in a deadly world which isn't scaled to some grand narrative. Heroes, criminals, rulers and monsters all can die without fanfare and at the roll of a die. Violence in Lu-En always comes with real stakes and the costs can be high. 👑 Your character's narrative is king. A careful session 0 with myself will ensure rich ties for your character to ensure they feel a stake in Lu-En and the various factions at play. We focus on character driven narratives and their personal goals rather than large overarching save-the-world plots. 🌱 Mechanics can be complex and intimidating. I pride myself on running a beginner friendly space that is always open for discussion and rule interpretation. It might not be everyone's cup of tea but I believe all TTRPGs are more fun when approached in this manner. ⚔️ I will take you through an unforgettable custom-built adventure in a system designed from the ground up for just that purpose. In an environment and story built for you and your party, you will get to take chances, make mistakes, and push open the sides of the sandbox. 🐱 Life is hard; Playing roleplaying games shouldn't be. About me

I'm a professional Game Master and when I'm lucky - occassional player - of TTRPGs specialising in Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition and Pathfinder 2E. I am passionate about creating an atmosphere of immersion for my games through theatrics, acting, sound effects, music, maps and illustrations for our games. Character creation

Creating your character

Characters will begin at Level 1 using the Point Buy system (unless we have a group of experienced players, we can start at 3!) A setting primer and access to my DNDBeyond will be provided upon registration for the adventure. All official and homebrew materials are welcome to be requested as long as homebrew or expanded content is flagged with me beforehand so we can fit it in/balance if needed :) I love putting a lot of care and attention into Character Creation before Session 1 with; ■ 1:1 chat to help you go through initial character ideas and explore what kind of game you're most interested in playing ■ Group Session 0 once we have at least 3 players to build a united idea of the narrative and game we'll be pursuing as well as any inter-party history that players might want ■ Full access to my DND Beyond subscription to help you plan your character before Session 0. Once characters are completed, I'll help you import them into FoundryVTT for play.

Preparing for the session

🗺️ Bring your mic, laptop/desktop and a way to take notes, it's time to experience Lu-En. Outside of that, all you need is a character idea and desire for that character to be part of a great adventure.

🔮 Full FoundryVTT integration of ambient music, sound effects, token artwork and gameplay. 💎 Customised character tokens, journals and virtual props to make you really feel like a dungeon-delving hero. 🔥 A mechanically knowledgeable GM who loves the rule-of-cool and isn't afraid to make on-the-fly adjudications for player ideas. 🧝🏼‍♂️ Fully voiced and fleshed out NPCs for you to interact with, including many expanded ones not in the original module. 🔨 Responsive and active discord for managing things like downtime, NPC relations and shopping!

Homebrew rules

🎲 STACKING ADVANTAGE: To encourage teamwork, Advantage is giving a +2 stacking benefit after the first instance of Advantage. Disadvantage works the same. ⚔️ WEAPON MASTERY+5: Characters with Weapon Mastery can use multiple Weapon Masteries with a single weapon type, selecting which to use on their attacks. However the effects of Weapon Mastery only trigger if they beat a creature's AC by +5 (encouraging Advantage stacking and effects such as Bless). ❤️‍🩹 HIT DICE AND RECOVERY: Characters do not automatically heal and only regain 1/2 of their resources during rests. Instead Hit Dice must be used to heal HP and can be used to purchase Long Rest resources (such as Rages, Spell Slots etc) at a 1:1 ratio. This is managed mostly automatically through a custom FoundryVTT setting for ease of players. 🤒 EXHAUSTION AND GOING TO 0: A character that is reduced to 0HP gains a level of Exhaustion (5e 2024 rules) upon being brought back to consciousness. Characters can also take a level of Exhaustion to succeed a check that they would fail by 1. BELTED ITEM: Each character has a "belted item" which they can quickly reach and use as a Bonus Action or Move Action instead of a standard Action. How Robin creates a safe table

I try to always set up a private conversation to go over any special safety tools or needs for players and see if this game is the right match for you. We will also do a session 0 and send consent forms where I will know what type of content avoid if it makes you uncomfortable. All Safety Tools are digital and a link will be provided to players upon completing session 0. I'm quite active in checking up on players aftergames as a form of aftercare as well. I heavily encourage discussion and facilitation of safe space.
