About the adventure
A bone-deep chill runs through you, rippling across the skin and settling in your bones. No breeze stirs. No winds whip. It should be comfortable: The calm, soft, silvery and purple light of Rosohna - the City of Rebirth - washes over you, bathing everything in a peaceful glow. Yet, you shiver. Something is amiss. You pull your cloak tightly around yourself and brace for...something. Something feels off. The War of Ash and Light has not only left scars across the physical terrain and bodies of soldiers. The fabric of the peaceful city seems to be stretching to near breaking, as unseen hands have taken hold of the fabric of Rosohna. This campaign begins under the same soft glowing lights of the Kryn capital city, in the world of Exandria (the main setting of "Critical Role"). We will begin in Rosohna itself in the wake of the Dynasty's external focus on the War of Light and Ash. Set either immediately before final negotiations for the accords between the Kryn Dynasty and the Dwendalian Empire (or after the Catatheosis - birth of the gods as mortals - depending upon table preference), the characters will be swept up into the intrigue that simmers just below the smooth surface. For whatever reason, your character has been pulled into an invisible web that wraps more tightly across the city with each passing day. Will you be a force of peace? Will you find your place in the society of the Luxon? Or, will you be a force of chaos - the chill that runs across the city like a freezing wind? Will outside forces cause the cauldron to boil over or will the Dynasty emerge - once again - reborn. This is a campaign for players of all experience levels. I delight in challenging experienced players and teaching the new (7 years of teaching does that to you). As the game will be either contemporary to the mid-point of Mighty Nein's adventures or far in the future any significant spoilers should be avoided. Session 0 is free.

About me
Hi! My name is Chris and I love stories. I love stories that force the reader to question themselves and their world (Is this what we could/should be? What would I do in a similar situation? How would I respond if pressed like this?) and gather people together as they do so. The type of stories that force us to listen, to question, to tarry with things small and large. This love, and a need to put off writing another grad paper, led me to D&D about ten years ago. Few things bring me as much joy as sitting around a table wrestling with decision, finding/failing at redemption, rolling, challenging and being challenged, or simply sharing an evening with others excited by the same thing. I began DMing almost immediately. I enjoy crafting, richly textured, immersive/lived-in worlds wherein the NPCs are worth caring about, the scenery is beautiful, and player discernment of their own chosen place in it is vital. I have run multiple WOTC games as well as games in Exandria, but also spent 5+ years running a game in my own version of the Feywild. My heart for games lies in hospitality. I love welcoming new players and teaching the game (I taught at university for 7ish years). I also love offering others the wide-open welcome I received when I started playing. Regardless of who you are, I will offer the same space and protect it. Meh - I just love DND (and books, and history, and literature, and philosophy...and...ok, I am a nerd). I also paint ttrpg minis and sketch.

Creating your character
We be starting at level 2 (as it helps avoid losing characters early). For stats: We will use point-buy. My preference for point-buy is directed toward making sure every player at the table gets an equal chance to shine. You will have access to all of my DNDBeyond books (which will include all of CR's material) and anything I homebrew (I have a couple setting appropriate subclasses - Oath of the Light Paladin and College of the Fatesingers bard, plus one I am not done with yet). We will be playing 2014 with some key 2024 components added in (some 2024 spells and all of 2024's healing). Character creation: We can begin working through ideas and concepts via DM on character concepts, background, etc. but will finish during Session 0. Come up with ideas and hold them loosely just in-case something changes during Session 0. Session 0: We will cover safety tools, table rules, and thematics.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
Create a basic DNDBeyond account (I will provide access to my material and maps) and add the Beyond20 extension. I tend to use DNDBeyond for everything that I can as it means players have to download/prepare fewer things. I will provide access to a Discord Server for this game once a player has been accepted. Webcams are not required but encouraged.
What Chris brings to the table
I know its popular to say that 'Rule of Cool' rules the world. I think the rules create a framework that allows the game to be challenging. I value a challenge. That said, I will always attempt to reward creativity in befitting manners. Player's should feel good about their great ideas. I love all the aspects of the game and while I plan thoroughly, the table is the source of action. If the players are engaged in in-depth RP - I am thrilled. I delight in fleshing out engaging NPCs with their own drives, motivations, and quirks. I attempt to embody the characters, demonstrating their uniqueness in both manner and voice. I can carry my own weight with both. I enjoy a strategic and challenging battle, but not all battles should be fought to the death and there are creative ways to deal with violence. I always reward creativity. For this campaign, I provide a fleshed out world and NPCs (voices, mannerism, and goals), all of my DNDBeyond material (including all CR material), original maps, and ambient music.
Homebrew rules
Potions: 1. Bonus action to consume and roll for healing (ex. Greater Potion of Healing: 4d4+4 HP, 12 HP average). 2. Full action gets you the maximum amount of healing from the potion (ex. Greater Potion of Healing: 20 HP healing). Crits (for combat): Maximal damage + 1 set of dice rolls. So 2d6+4 does 16 points of damage + 2d6 more. Natural 20s (out of combat): These are not technically crits, but rolling a Nat 20 feels great and important. I always factor that in, but it does not guarantee an autosuccess. (ex: Ranger rolls a 20 on a survival check for a DC 25 challenge, gets a large part of what would have been earned on a full role. The player class and the 20 mean it makes sense to provide more than a failure) Healing: Will be using 2024 healing. Success With a Cost: If a roll is close to the DC required but would not succeed, I may (DM's disgression) offer option of succeeding at a price. This would entail obtaining the goal/hitting the opponent, but it might leave you vulnerable or cause some pain.

How Chris creates a safe table
I make this a vital part of my games. We begin with a Session 0 wherein overall expectations of hospitality including sensitive subject matters, content warnings, lines and veils, and general table etiquette. I have an open-door policy, so if a player ever feels uncomfortable at the table, I like to address it as soon as possible. Players are always welcome to leave the table and take breaks as they like. After session I tend to keep the Discord up and running for 15 minutes for the sake of debriefing the session and/or limiting bleed (or general conversation) For sessions longer than 2 hours, I like to work in a break to stretch, grab snacks, use the restroom, etc.
